Investors are very often turned off by a cyclical business. Nonetheless, such behavior gives investors the chance to take a position in a profitable business model at a low entry price. With a recent boom in the U.S. market, prices are not expected to be in the low end. Let us look at AGL Resources (GAS) and Suburban Propane (SPH) to see whether any of them offer a profitable business model at a low entry price.
Intelligent, Less Risky Acquisition
Hit by adverse weather and merger expenses during 2012, AGL Resources continues to recover from an abnormal 2012. Also, its storage facilities and marketing business was affected by the change in gas flows generated by developments in the Marcellus shale. The acquisition of Nicor Gas is also thought to have reduced the company’s competitiveness. In line, the business model is considered to be a healthy cash producer albeit minor adjustments are required.
AGL Resources’ latest acquisition was criticized beca use it shot the company’s valuation to the top rankings, reducing the interest shown by prospective investors’. On the upside, the operations gave the firm a new opportunity to expand geographically. Additionally, the firm turned into the largest pure gas distributor, with access to eight interstate pipeline connections. On top of it all, the business continues to operate at one of the lowest production costs.

I would never assume that $1 of retained earnings at GTSI (GTSI) was worth $1. It’s not.
So it would be hard to buy GTSI on an earnings basis. I didn’t. I bought it for the Ben Graham: Net-Net Newsletter’s model portfolio simply based on its cash, receivables, and stake in another company. Those 3 things meant the company’s liquidation value was higher than the price I paid for the stock.
- [By Geoff Gannon]
I picked GTSI (GTSI) for the Ben Graham: Net-Net Newsletter.
And that is not a good business. It lost money in about half of the last 10 years. It had no history of earning more than about 6% on equity over time. It was a truly terrible business.
- [By Geoff Gannon]
Someone who reads my articles sent me this question: My…question has to do with the type of investments you tend to put your energy toward. Evaluating a net-net is a whole lot different than evaluating a company that has a competitive advantage and trades at much higher multiples. To me, the net-net evaluation process is a whole lot more straightforward, as there are fewer intangibles (if any) and less prediction about the future involved. I don’t have to worry about whether GTSI (GTSI) has any competitive advantage – I know it doesn’t. Then again, I look at a company like Becton Dickenson (BDX) and I see a highly predictable company with a decent moat selling at a reasonable price. I can look at BDX and figure I might earn 10-15% annually over a long time frame. That’s really different from thinking about investing in a net-net where I can see how it’s 30-50% undervalued now, but it’s not something I’m going to hold onto for decades. It’s more of a matter of waiting for that one-time “pop” that will happen sometime in the next 1-5 years. How do you decide where to put your energy?

The nagging worries about the sustainability of the US energy boom, built around producing oil and natural gas from shale, seem to have found a temporary (at least) home in the shares of Chesapeake Energy (CHK) after the company reported fourth quarter earnings after the close the day before yesterday, on February 26. American States Water (AWR) provides water service to one of 36 Californians throughout the northern, coastal and southern regions of the state.
In their recent earnings report, AWR showed an 11.1% increase in diluted earnings per share, but revenues fell short of analyst estimates by 2% due to an increase in the effective income tax rate for the company’s water segment.

American States Water Co. (NYSE: AWR) is one of the best examples I can think of. Its current payout of 2.88% may not seem like much when compared to the likes of a Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP (NYSE: KMP) at 6.5%, but when you consider that AWR has increased its dividend for the last 59 years, you begin to understand why this is pivotal to building your wealth, especially now.

For money market fund managers, the debt ceiling drama is just the latest in a long series of challenges. Low rates have forced Federated Investors (NYSE: FII ) , Schwab (NYSE: SCHW ) , and many other major money market fund managers to subsidize their funds, accepting reduced management fees just to keep their interest rates from going negative. As the graph below shows, fund levels have fallen sharply in response to those low rates as well, hurting fund managers’ profitability.

Lately, though, T. Rowe Price hasn’t benefited as much from share-price gains. Competitor Invesco (NYSE: IVZ ) has managed to expand its margins and produce growth among its current lineup of funds, with exposure to a big range of markets that leaves it broadly placed to serve its customers’ needs. But for T. Rowe Price and peer Federated Investors (NYSE: FII ) , investors haven’t been putting as much money to work in their funds as analysts had expected to see, and that has led to some growth shortfalls. Federated in particular missed its earnings estimates in its most recent quarter, and analysts see growth there slowing to just 3%. T. Rowe Price has better prospects, retaining its double-digit revenue growth, but after a substantial move upward at the beginning of the year, its stock has treaded water.

These state laws generally require two types of benefits for injured employees: medical benefits, including expenses related to the diagnosis and treatment of an injury, disease, or both, as well as any required rehabilitation and (indemnity payments, which consists of temporary wage replacement, permanent disability payme nts, and death benefits to surviving family members.

The muted returns in the major indexes belie the big moves in some individual stocks, which were flying around like, well, Jack Ryan chasing down a Russian terrorist who had–spoiler alert–kidnapped his wife. On the downside, Nu Skin (NUS) plunged 42% this week on reports that the Chinese government would investigate it for being a pyramid scheme. Best Buy (BBY), meanwhile, plunged 35% after it unwrapped holiday sales that were explosively bad. While it has diversity among metals, the company is also in the final stages of adding even more diversity among commodities. It has pending deals to acquire both McMoRan Exploration (NYSE: MMR ) and Plains Exploration and Production (NYSE: PXP ) . When the deals close, Freeport will shift its revenue mix from 100% mining related to around 75% mining and 25% oil and gas. That makes the company a truly diversified economic indicator as copper, oil, and natural gas are much more important to our economy than aluminum.

The pending purchases
Aside from its current core metals operations, Freeport is in the process of acquiring a pair of independent oil and gas producers, Plains Exploration & Production (NYSE: PXP ) and McMoRan Exploration (NYSE: MMR ) . In December, Freeport announced that it would pay 0.6531 shares of its common stock and $25 in cash for each outstanding share of Plains. In addition, for McMoRan it stated that it would pay $14.75 in cash and 1.15 units of a royalty trust that will hold a 5% overriding royalty interest in McMoRan’s shallow water and ultra-deepwater prospects.

Another under-$10 stock that’s starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Fuel-Tech (FTEK), which uses a suite of advanced technologies to provide boiler optimization, efficiency improvement and air pollution reduction and control solutions to utility and industrial customers. This stock is off to a slow start in 2013, with shares up just 7% so far.
If you take a look at the chart for Fuel Tech, you’ll notice that this stock has entered a tight consolidation chart pattern over the last month, with shares moving between $4.19 on the downside and $4.78 a share on the upside. Shares of FTEK are now starting to trend higher and move within range of triggering a big breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.
Market players should now look for long-biased trades in FTEK if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.66 to $4.68 a share and then once it takes out more resistance at $4.78 to its 52-week high at $5.20 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 77,549 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then FTEK will set up to enter new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets of that breakout are $5.50 to $6, or even $7 a share.
Traders can look to buy FTEK off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $4.33 a share, or just below its 200-day at $4.14 a share. One can also buy FTEK off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

I could go down the list for each company that I thought was an especially oddly valued stock. For Birner Dental (BDMS), it’s possible people were paying more attention to earnings per share and dividends than EBITDA and share buybacks. For Bancinsurance, the company’s top management was under SEC investigation. For George Risk (RSKIA), it was a combination of not really cheap on a P/E basis and just barely cheap on a cash basis – and it was connected to homebuilding.

For example, a company involved in a mundane business like running hair salons – like Regis (RGS), dentist offices – like Birner Dental (BDMS), grocery stores – like Village Supermarket (VLGEA), or garbage dumps – like Waste Management (WM), may be easy to estimate as essentially a no-growth business.
