Investors are still wading through the implications of the Federal Reserve’s decision not to begin tapering its bond purchases. Citigroup’s William Katz has a note out today wading through the consequences for brokers and asset managers.
He expects two main outcomes from the taper delay. Firstly, that broker dealers will likely lag in the short term, given rate leverage embedded in their models and recent outperformance—although he warns that a more prolonged delay would “materially impact” the time before these names will reach normalized earnings. He also writes that managers focused on stocks will likely lag compared to fixed income managers, while wondering overall if the move calls into question the strength of the economic recovery and the credibility of the Fed.
Read on for company-specific musings from the report:
Moving up Franklin Resources (BEN) among Traditionals; Close out T. Rowe Price (TROW)/Legg Mason (LM) pair trade — We are still selective on Traditional managers but are re-ranking our short-term (ST) preferences as we believe FI-centric managers may outperform as NAV risks diminish while volumes become more sustainable. Invesco (IVZ) remains our top selection but we move up BEN ahead of TROW. BEN should outperform given: a) attractive relative valuation; and, b) easing investor concern over FI NAV risk and global bond volumes. We also close out long TROW/underweight LM pair trade as equities flow recovery could slow. Additionally, we see Wisdom Tree Investments (WETF) negatively impacted as DXJ is ~35% of AUM and depreciating USD may result in uneven ST volumes.

What’s the Catch With MyEcheck Inc? According to various disclosures, transactions of $500 and $2k have or will occur to mention MyEcheck Inc in various investment newsletters. The most recent news for MyEcheck Inc is not so recent as it dates from last April and was an announcement that the company would license its proprietary system to other operators for a share of their transaction revenue on the system with the CEO pointing out: “In addition to our processing revenue, we will have licensing revenue that will exceed our processing revenue in a relatively short period of time.” However, a quick look at MyEcheck Inc’s financials reveals revenues of $3k (most recent reported quarter), zero, zero and zero for the past four quarters along with net income of $387k (most recent reported quarter) and net losses of $8k, $35k and $14k. At the end of last June, MyEcheck Inc had no cash to cover $804k in current liabilities. So maybe investor will want to wait for evidence of licensing and processing revenue to materialize.

Then there is that lucky or unlucky outcome of price hikes. The public will pay more for stamps, making you and me the losers in this. The question to ask is whether or not Stamps.com Inc. (NASDAQ: STMP) just get a built-in revenue booster per customer on a static basis?
- [By Bryan Murphy]
By almost any measure, Stamps.com Inc. (NASDAQ:STMP) is a solid investment. Revenue and profits are on the rise, and are projected to grow again in 2014. Stamps.com has also developed a penchant for earnings beats. And, at a trailing P/E of 18.3 and a forward-looking P/E ratio of 15.7, it’s not like STMP shares cost a relative fortune. Yet, STMP is starting to look like a major liability where it could hurt shareholders the most… on the chart.

What: Shares of online postage provider Stamps.com (NASDAQ: STMP ) surged 24% today after its quarterly results and guidance.
So what: The stock has slumped a bit in 2013 on concerns over slowing growth, but today’s first-quarter results — adjusted EPS spiked 38% on a 13.5% revenue increase — and upbeat full-year guidance naturally eases some of those worries. In fact, Stamps.com hit its highest level of total paid customers — and added its largest number of new paid customers — during the quarter, giving investors plenty of good vibes about the company’s prospects going forward.

Shares of French telecommunications provider Orange (ORAN) ("Orange" or "the company") have rallied to the tune of 51% since hitting fresh multi-year lows in July 2013. While it’s hard to recommend shares that have run so far, so quick, it is my opinion that Orange is still presenting investors a compelling asymmetric risk/reward situation. One way to limit risk is to set limit orders to pick up shares on any pullback caused by the shenanigans going on inside the Beltway.
