Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) and Toyota Motors Corp. (NYSE: TM) are said to be making history with the first “green bond” of asset-backed securities in the auto industry. Green bonds are securities or contracts where the proceeds are applied exclusively toward projects and activities that promote climate or other environmental sustainability initiatives. Citigroup and 12 other banks introduced new Green Bond Principles earlier in 2014.

Citigroup’s announcement shows that it has now successfully closed Toyota Financial Services’ (TFS) first ever asset-backed green bond issuance — for a sum of $1.75 billion. The deal was also said to be upsized from a prior $1.25 billion benchmark, due to strong investor demand.

This may not be stock-moving news for Citigroup or Toyota, but this could mark the start of a new trend. As newcomers like Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) begin to take increasingly more share from the likes of Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) and General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM), you could start to see more green asset-backed securities issued by the auto finance industry.

In the Financials sector, the Fund has significant investments (13.9% of Fund assets) in companies with a U.S. consumer banking focus (e.g., checking accounts, savings accounts, credit cards, home and personal loans). Capital One (COF), Wells Fargo (WFC), and Bank of America (BAC) are among the Fund’s largest positions within this category. While each company has diversified lines of business and derives its profitability from numerous customers, U.S. consumer banking has emerged as a dominant theme as a result of our bottom-up research process. For each investment opportunity, we consider the balance between company fundamentals (what we are buying) and valuation (what we are paying). The higher the valuation, the stronger the company fundamentals must be for us to invest. Although U.S. consumer banks are trading broadly in-line with their historical discount to the market, we believe that the quality of bank earnings today is superior to the quality of earnings ten years ago. After several years of intense regulatory scrutiny, most banks now have higher capital, better liquidity, fewer competitors, and the ability to improve profitability. In our opinion, banks could enter a period of loan growth, expanding margins, and positive operating leverage, while maintaining charge-offs below historical levels. Lastly, cyclical factors could work in their favor. For example, higher short-term rates and a steeper yield curve could increase the value of banks with low-cost deposits Capital One (the Fund’s largest position at 4.0%) is a consumer finance firm with credit card, auto lending, and banking businesses. The company has a strong franchise, attractive growth opportunities, and a disciplined management team with a solid track record and long-term focus. Capital One has grown market share while achieving high return on equity through its data analytics, which have led to sophisticated marketing and strong underwriting. However, I expect that Intel is at risk of having a significant marketing problem trying to sell a dual core product into a world of quad core phones, even if the dual core part delivers better performance/watt. I further expect that from what is currently known about Bay Trail’s GPU (4 EU Gen7 GPU), it is unlikely that — unless Intel is either using Imagination’s (IGNMF.PK) next generation PowerVR 6 or a beefed up Gen7 design for the "Merrifield" SoC — it will be as competitive with the Snapdragon 800 on the GPU side of things, which could pose as an additional headwind to adoption. I also believe that the Q1 2014 launch curtails any hope that there will be a 14nm smartphone product launched in 2014 (although Mr. Krzanich’s comments about "acceleration" could be a source of optimism here), which means that the company’s process lead could ultimately prove to be ephemeral in this particular end market. Fortunately, product cycles in this space are sho rt, so it may be okay to have Merrifield be reasonably short lived.

But after the bell, Molycorp (NYSE: MCP  ) released its earnings report, which included a narrower adjusted loss than investors had expected, but revenue dropped 17% from the third quarter. Even though sales volumes for the full 2013 year soared 42%, the poor pricing environment led to only a minimal 5% rise in dollar revenue. The stock was volatile in after-hours trading, initially gaining ground but then falling to a 3% loss as of 6:30 p.m. EST. Molycorp will have a conference call tomorrow morning to discuss the results and give investors more information about the company’s future.

Cheap Stocks to Buy Now: Molycorp (MCP)

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Just a few years ago, China had a virtual monopoly on the stuff, but because it implemented willful export controls that sent the price rare earth elements soaring into the stratosphere, it encouraged not only companies like Molycorp (NYSE: MCP  ) and Lynas to develop their deposits in earnest, but also created something of a cottage industry in illegal mining that, according to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, produced 40,000 tons of rare earths in 2012. Considering China’s legal production over the first six months of 2013 was 41,000 tons, that’s a pretty significant amount and perhaps partially explains why prices collapsed again in the aftermath of the export controls it implemented.
