Top 10 Financial Companies To Watch For 2014

Times have changed, and women are stepping in to close the gender gap in corporate America. More and more researchers are looking at the impact women have in the business world. And what they’re finding is that companies that embrace gender diversity — on their boards and in their management ranks — are reaping measurable financial rewards.

Consider a research study conducted last year by Credit Suisse of companies with a market capitalization of $10 billion or more. It found that over a six-year period, companies with at least one female board member outperformed the investment return of companies that had all-male boards by 26%.

Perhaps this is in part because women offer a different perspective on business than their male counterparts. Or maybe it’s due to the changing consumer landscape, in which women are gaining footing on their male counterparts — in wages, workplace responsibilities, and even as business owners. After all, who is in a better position to help their company appeal to female customers than female leaders?

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Pendrell (PCO) is a fully integrated intellectual property investment and advisory firm. This stock closed up 2.3% to $2.18 in Tuesday’s trading session.

    Tuesday’s Range: $2.08-$2.22

    52-Week Range: $1.04-$2.71

    Tuesday’s Volume: 263,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 457,962

From a technical perspective, PCO bounced higher here back above its 50-day moving average of $2.16 with lighter-than-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of PCO within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if PCO manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance at $2.22 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in PCO as long as it’s trending above Tuesday’s low of $2.08 or above $2 and then once it sustains a move or close above $2.22 with volume that hits near or above 457,962 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PCO will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.50 to its 52-week high at $2.71.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Newman]

WisdomTree  (NASDAQ: WETF  ) , the fifth-largest ETF provider, has grown its average assets under management from less than $1 billion in 2006 to more than $23 billion this year, with an average ETF fee of 0.53%. The low-cost leader, Vanguard, keeps putting the pressure on competitors with extremely low expense ratios. For the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF  (NYSEMKT: VTI  ) , the annual fee amounts to a paltry 0.05%.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

2013 has been a stellar year for asset manager WisdomTree Investments (WETF); shares have nearly doubled since the calendar flipped over to January. That’s not a huge surprise considering the fact that investment firms are effectively leveraged plays on this equity rally. But now, the technical setup forming in shares of WisdomTree points to even higher ground for the rest of the year.

Right now, WETF is forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish setup that’s formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares at $14 and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as WETF bounces in between those two technical levels, it’s getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above that $14 level. When that happens, investors have a buy signal.

WisdomTree isn’t exactly cheap right now. From a fundamental standpoint, this stock looks downright pricey — but that has little to do with shares’ price action right now. Until the technicals change, the high probability returns remain on the long-side of WETF.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Two Harbors is the parent of the newly minted Silver Bay Realty (NYSE: SBY  ) , one of only two single-family residential REITs currently cashing in on the foreclosure-to-rental craze that has been a hot sector over the past year or two. Two Harbors’ stock has fallen since the end of March as the company has paid a quarterly dividend of $0.32 per share, sold 50 million additional shares, and partitioned out shares of Silver Bay to its own investors. Two Harbors, like American Capital Agency, has also experienced a growth spurt since its inception, growing its portfolio from $520 million at March 31, 2010 to its current $14 billion.

For Wall Street types, single-family foreclosures can be bought cheaply and in bulk, then fixed up and rented. Companies like the Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX  ) and Colony Financial (NYSE: CLNY  ) have been very active in this market, with the former purchasing 16,000 homes just last year, and the latter ramping up its own portfolio to approximately 7,000. This new industry has also spawned fresh entrants from the REIT field, Silver Bay Realty (NYSE: SBY  ) and Altisource Residential, (NYSE: RESI  ) two trusts that were spun off earlier this year from parent companies Two Harbors Investment (NYSE: TWO  ) and Altisource Portfolio Solutions (NASDAQ: ASPS  ) , specifically to take advantage of the boom in the foreclosure-to-rental market.

2013 is starting off sweet for the hybrid REIT
Despite missing earnings per share estimates by $0.03, Two Harbors managed to keep its net interest spread at 2.9%, with no decrease from the previous quarter. The trust took a hit on book value of $0.35 — not too disappointing considering the special Silver Bay Realty (NYSE: SBY  ) dividend of $1.01 Two Harbors passed around with its own $0.32 payout, about six weeks ago.
