But now that markets have had time to react, a number of different opinions are surfacing about how important Detroit’s bankruptcy is:

Investment manager BlackRock said early this week that its analysts “anticipate the impact of the event will be much smaller than its size might indicate,” calling Detroit “an idiosyncratic situation” and saying that therefore its analysts “do not anticipate a widespread systemic effect.” UBS noted that “precedents that do exist would appear to favor holders of [general-obligation municipal] bonds backed by an unlimited property tax” in its argument that the bankruptcy shouldn’t create big problems, also noting that muni-bond insurance companies cover almost 90% of Detroit’s debt. Citigroup notes that “the magnitude of Detroit’s economic and financial problems dwarfs those of any other large local government in the U.S. by a wide amount” in arguing that muni-bond yields aren’t likely to rise too far. Taking the other side of the argument, muni-bond specialist Nuveen Asset Management believes that “municipal investors should now view all Michigan general-obligation bonds as having no greater standing than any other form of municipal obligations,” reversing the general understanding that general-obligation bonds backed by broad powers to tax are inherently more secure than bonds with more limited sources of revenue backing them. Indeed, Michigan-specific muni-bond funds took much more serious hits over the week than the broad muni-bond market, with BlackRock MuniYield Michigan (NYSE: MYM  ) falling almost 5% since last Thursday and Nuveen Michigan Quality Income (NYSE: NUM  ) posting about a 4% loss. Analyst Meredith Whitney went a step further, predicting a wave of municipal bankruptcies resulting from Detroit’s action. Yet after having cried wolf in late 2010 and having proven to be wrong in her expected 12-month timeline for massive defaults, Whitney has had her credibility questioned by many ex

For a bit of context, competitor Trulia (NYSE: TRLA  ) is in negotiations to buy Market Leader (NASDAQ: LEDR  ) for $355 million. Market Leader is a smaller (and growing) business that’s similar to both Zillow and Trulia. Since Market Leader is still earnings negative, we can’t compare it on a P/FCF basis, but we can look at other metrics. For one, Market Leader trades at a still-ridiculous-but-slightly less-so 57.2 times forward earnings. It trades at 6.4 times last year’s sales. Zillow trades at 16.4 times last year’s sales. Management expects sales to hit (on the high end) $182 million — that implies a price of 10.55 times forward sales. If they double a year or two after, which would be unbelievably phenomenal, it would trade at 5.3 times sales.

As the photovoltaic and wind markets mature in the United States and around the world, attention is shifting toward the next step in the market’s evolution: battery storage. Gaining some exposure recently, battery storage conversations swirled through the media with news of Tesla Motors’ (NASDAQ: TSLA  ) Gigafactory; however, the applications for battery storage greatly transcend those pertaining to electric vehicles.

    Utility applications
According to a research report published by IHS, grid-connected energy storage is bound to experience substantial growth over the next few years. Approximately 340 MW of grid-connected energy storage was installed in 2012 and 2013; however, IHS solar research manager Sam Wilkinson and report co-author Abigail Ward suggest that the annual rate of installations will grow to more than 6GW by 2017 and more than 40 GW by 2022. Perhaps this is an underestimate. California alone has set a lofty target. The California P ublic Utilities Commission has an energy storage target of 1.325 GW by 2020 for its three largest utilities.

Where will these and other utilities look in order to meet these targets? One company is The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES  ) . Located in the United States and South America, AES has more than 200 MW of storage-based resources in operation and construction, and it has more than 1,000 MW in development. Last week, AES revealed its Advancion storage offering, which the company characterizes as “a complete battery-based grid resource — delivering the services expected from peaking power plants, with added benefits.” Supplying AES with the power conversion system for Advancion is Parker Hannifin. The two companies have previously worked together on other storage projects, namely on the AES Laurel Mountain Storage Array, a 64 MW advanced battery-based resource, which helps a 98 MW wind farm to supply grid stability services.
