Top 10 Dow Dividend Stocks To Buy For 2015

NEW YORK (The Deal) — Banks have been forced to re-think their approach to M&A as a wave of global regulation alters the appeal of deals and divestments. After three decades of consolidation — epitomized by Bank of America Corp.’s acquisitive growth to transform itself into a national coast-to-coast universal bank — a trifecta of economic weakness, regulatory uncertainty and shareholder aversion has produced a stagnant market for bank M&A.

Now, five years after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, new strictures are causing banks to think twice about whether the benefits of a transaction outweigh the cost, complexity and regulatory burdens of greater size or diversification. [Read: Will Twitter Sell Its Soul Like Facebook Did?]

Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY) just gave shareholders a great boost in income by raising its quarterly per share dividend by $0.08, which represents a 12.5% increase. The new dividend is now $0.72 per share, over the old rate of $0.64. I remain heavily allocated to energy, so I haven’t yet taken a good look at OXY yet. I took a quick peek at the company a year ago or so and was concerned about executive compensation and haven’t revisited this idea since. The company now has 12 years of dividend growth and continues to grow the dividend at a robust rate. The yield on the new dividend payout is 3.12%, and the dividend appears to be well covered with a payout ratio of 50%.

Occidental Petroleum (OXY) is undergoing a makeover, becoming a smaller, more efficient company with more exposure to shale assets in the US than higher-risk, overseas geographies. Proceeds from overseas sells are going toward purchasing more domestic assets and share buybacks, which should boost its valuation. We like the outstanding dividend growth.

Mesabi Trust is a royalty trust that receives and then pays out to shareholders a portion of the proceeds from iron mined by a Cliffs Natural Resources subsidiary. Some might avoid it because royalty trusts often have expiration dates, but it’s worth noting that Mesabi’s is rather far away. SAN FRANCISCO — After compiling a list of more than 100 CEO candidates, Microsoft settled on Satya Nadella a homegrown leader who joined the software maker in the early 1990s. That’s back when Google’s founders were teenagers and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was in elementary school. Tuesday’s hiring of Nadella as Microsoft’s CEO after a five-month search is a safe move that’s likely to be greeted with sighs of relief around the company’s Redmond, Wash., headquarters, industry analysts say. But the methodical, almost predictable decision is likely to reinforce perceptions that Microsoft (MSFT) is a plodding company reluctant to take risks as it competes against younger rivals who relish going out on a limb. While Google (GOOG) founder and CEO Larry Page boasts about his company taking “moon shots” and Zuckerberg promises to “move fast and break things,” Microsoft has fallen behind the technological curve after underestimating the importance of Internet search more than a decade ago and reacting too slowly to the rise of mobile devices during the past seven years. Meanwhile, the sales of personal computers running on Microsoft’s Windows software are shrinking. Microsoft’s malaise may have narrowed the field of up-and-coming visionaries interested in running a company founded in 1975. Just as Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Apple (AAPL) founder Steve Jobs would never have considered working at IBM (IBM) in the 1980s, today’s entrepreneurial whiz kids scoff at Microsoft’s overtures. “Going to work at Microsoft could make it look like you are going back to the dark ages,” says Richard Metheny, a management coach for the executive search firm Witt/Kieffer in Chicago. “It’s a well-entrenched business that has had trouble lately figuring out how to play in this new world.” Despite its challenges, Microsoft remains a moneymaking machine that sits atop an $84 billion cash pile. Line up the return on capital lines – for the last 10 years – for Arden, Village (VLGEA), Weis, Harris Teeter (HTSI), and Kroger and you’ll see that the grocer this analyst thinks is unique clearly isn’t. Other grocers earn their cost of capital. They just aren’t as well known.

  • [By Geoff Gannon]

Okay. So my point is just that a business is a business — it’s not an industry. Just because a company is categorized in an industry doesn’t mean it works like the other companies in the industry. For example, Amazon (AMZN) and Best Buy (BBY) and Walgreens (WAG) and Village Supermarket (VLGEA) are all retailers. But they are all really, really different retailers. Technology changes have vastly different influences on them. They have completely different business models. They are actually trying to do totally different things. And you would analyze them – especially starting with customer habits – totally differently.

Check out the performance numbers on those three stocks over the last 10-13 years (I bought them at different times). You’ll notice that if I just never sold those stocks I wouldn’t need to do anything else. Those three stocks would’ve made a fine portfolio for the next decade or so.

Well, I did sell those stocks. And I did a lot else. And some of it worked very well and some of it worked very badly. But, almost without fail, the net result was never better than what would have happened if I’d kept those three stocks.

That’s not an accident. It took me a very, very long time to buy stocks when I was a kid. I bought six stocks in my first five years as an investor. That’s not quite a 20 punches approach – but it’s pretty close.

Why did I only buy one stock a year?

Because I didn’t know anything about stocks. And I didn’t think I knew anything about stocks.

My investment style was formed fr om a combination of extreme ignorance and extreme confidence. I was totally ignorant about stocks. And I was totally confident that I could learn all I needed to know about the stocks I needed to know about.

That combination led to focusing on a few very specific stocks. Stocks I was comfortable with.

When I was 14, there were only two places my money went. Into my brokerage account. Or into video games. So it’s not a surprise I bought Activision. At the time the video game industry had a much clearer future than it does today. And there was no better CEO of a video game company than Bobby Kotick. The balance sheet was pristine. When you backed out cash, the stock was cheap relative to sales. I looked at everything I could about video game companies and I decided sales were pretty profitable and pretty cash generative in this industry. All you needed was sensible capital allocation. All you needed was management that was going to run the place like a business . And I thought you h

To give credit where it’s due, Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) has been the one company to make electric vehicles a viable reality, melding coolness and functionality – even if not affordability – into an automobile that people will like, and buy. Yet, although TSLA shares are understandably priced relative to the company’s sales and potential future earnings, investors and consumers alike may be errantly holding Tesla up as the harbinger of the electric vehicle era. The fact of the matter is, EV’s are still a miniscule part of the auto market, and due to a lack of capacity and materials needed to put an electric car in every driveway, the real opportunity for carmakers like Honda Motor Co Ltd (NYSE:HMC) or Toyota Motor Corp (NYSE:TM) is to radically improve the efficiency of existing technologies like the combustion engine. Thing is, with the help of companies like Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CMI) and HydroPhi Technologies Group, Inc. (OTCMKTS:HPTG), names like Honda and Toyota re ally are making big strides in auto motor efficiency, with the biggest of those recent strides being made in the diesel arena. All joking aside, Tesla and other electric vehicle manufactures may want to look over their shoulder and see how quickly the diesel market is gaining on them.

Patrick Fallon/Bloomberg via Getty Images Speculation over the launch of an Apple iCar has excited the tech industry for some time, and now it looks as if the wait is finally over. On Monday, the tech giant unveiled an application that will enable drivers to integrate their iPhone and car entertainment system. The app, called CarPlay, will be rolled out by Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo in Geneva this week. “iPhone users always want their content at their fingertips and CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPhone and iOS Product Marketing. Through use of the app, drivers will be able to make calls, use the Google Maps function, listen to music and access messages through use of voice or touch. Users can control the application from the car’s native interface or push and hold the voice control button on the steering wheel to activate Siri — the voice activation software. According to Apple (AAPL), once a driver’s iPhone is connected to a vehicle with CarPlay integration, Siri will enable drivers to access their contacts, make calls, return missed calls or listen to voicemails without using their hands. Drivers will be able to dictate responses to messages, or simply make a call. Apple said the app will also anticipate a driver’s destination based on recent trips, via contacts, emails or texts and will provide routing instructions, traffic conditions and an estimated time of arrival. Apple CarPlay is available as an update to iOS 7 and works with Lightning-enabled iPhones, including the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5. BMW Group, Ford (F), General Motors (GM), Honda (HMC), Hyundai Motor, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor, PSA Peugeot Citroen, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor (TM) are also set to offer CarPlay in the future. CarPlay will be available in select cars shipping in 2014. Information on Apple’s “iOS in the Car” software w
