Advisors’ Opinion:

Yet in this suffering, investors can find some pretty tasty long-term bargains. In this case we’re referring to French major Total (TOT).

Like rivals BP and E, Total didn’t have a great 2013. However, there are plenty of catalysts that should help propel TOT stock into the future. For investors looking for beat-up bargain, TOT stock could be the key to a great total return in the energy sector.

  • [By Jayson Derrick]

Total (NYSE: TOT) announced that its European refining margin fell to $6.60 per metric ton in the first quarter from $26.90 per metric ton in the same quarter last year. Shares gained 0.09 percent, closing at $67.79.

  • [By Dan Burrows]

At the same time, RAI is forecast to have strong earnings growth this year and beyond. Wall Street expects earnings per share (EPS) to expand 6% in the current fiscal year, and by more than 8% in 2015. That should be more than enough growth and income to drive more total return outperformance this year and beyond.

Brazilian electricity giant CPFL Energia S.A. (NYSE: CPL  ) sank 20%, and recently yielded 5.9%. Its long-term debt has been rising, largely due to acquisitions, and its free cash flow has been shrinking (and even turning negative recently). YPF SOCIEDAD ANONIMA is a subsidiary of Repsol YPF, S.A.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Aaron Levitt]

First, the Brazilian government’s populist politics and price controls on various refined petroleum products have continued to destroy PBR’s bottom line. By only allowing Petrobras to sell gasoline at certain prices, the firm actually losses money on its downstream operations. These controls by the Brazilian government extend in other operations of PBR as well, and the threat of an Argentinian-style YPF (YPF) nationalization — however small — is there.

  • [By Jonathan Yates]

For investors, the rebound of YPF SA (NYSE: YPF) and Petrobras Argentina (NYSE: PZE), both oil and gas firms in Argentina, should serve as profitable examples for remaining bullish about the long term prospects of Petrobras Brasileiro (NYSE: PBR).

  • [By Jonathan Yates]

That is very easy to fix, however. Investors should look at the recent example of YPF SA (NYSE: YPF), the Argentine oil giant. Actions by the government of Argentina drove down the share price. Since then, the country has worked to make YPF SA, and Argentia, more attractive to investors. As a result, YPF SA is up more than 90 percent for 2013. Much of the economic health of Brazil rests on the performance of Petrobras, so more beneficial actions from the Government of Brazil should be expected.

  • [By fedezaldua]

Last year, the Argentinean government nationalized 51% of YPF (YPF) from Madrid based Repsol (REPYY), which still holds a 12.4% stake in Argentina’s biggest oil and gas company. When the nationalization happened, Argentina’s government argued that the Spanish group had not been investing enough in the country. Hence, the lack of investments had left Argentina without its very much appreciated external surplus in oil and gas. Even when its true that YPF’s Capex investments were kept at a minimum level from 2003 to 2011, its also true that low Capex was a direct result of Argentina’s (very) poor and unsustainable energy policies.

Shares of Energizer have jumped 15% to $112.37 at 10:24 a.m. today, while Spectrum Brands (SPB) has risen 1.4% to $76.88 and Kimberly Clark (KMB) has gained 1% to $112.14.

  • [By Asit Sharma]

Earlier this year, I singled out Kimberly-Clark (NYSE: KMB  ) as a stock that would likely outperform the S&P 500 index, especially should the broader market decline. I also praised the company’s concentrated business model, in which it benefits from a narrower business focus than some of its larger consumer goods peers. KMB’s first quarter of 2014, reported this week, seemed a middling result: The company managed to increase net income by 1.3% against a one percent decrease in sales. Organic sales for the period rose 4% versus the prior year. Reviewing a few themes from these earlier two articles in light of the company’s first quarter earnings may illuminate Kimberly-Clark’s direction for the rest of the year.

NRG Energy Inc’s (NYSE: NRG) 2013 coal-fired share of generation was 28.8 percent, but it’s been actively adding renewable sources. Its stock was up 2.2 percent. NextEra Energy Inc (NYSE: NEE), owner/operator of the largest fleet of renewable generation in the US with just 1.7 percent of its output from coal, was up 2.8 percent.

Answer: It’s too soon to say what the financial impact of the Winnipeg incident will have on TransCanada. The impact for its customers, including Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL) and Great Plains Energy (NYSE: GXP), may be more acute in the short term. TransCanada will definitely be under increased regulatory scrutiny.
I’m a fan of TransCanada for the long term. It has a solid, diverse and growing presence in North American energy infrastructure. It’s about much more than Keystone XL.

What works in P&G’s advantage is the fact that the company is already ahead of its peers in the emerging markets. As of 2012, P&G had sales of $33 billion in developing markets as compared to $24 billion for Unilever (UL) and $10 billion for Colgate (CL). This competitive edge over peers will sustain as P&G has product quality, innovation and has a significant marketing budget given its comfortable cash position.
