This column originally appeared exclusively first for Stock Investor Cheat Sheet premium subscribers on May 20th and has been updated to reflect current data changes.

With shares of Dynex Capital Inc. (NYSE:DX) trading at around $10.63, is DX an OUTPERFORM, WAIT AND SEE or STAY AWAY? Let’s analyze the stock with the relevant sections of our CHEAT SHEET investing framework:

C = Catalyst for the Stock’s Movement

Dynex Capital, Inc. is a real estate investment trust, or REIT, which invests in mortgage loans and securities on a leveraged basis.  The company invests in both Agency and non-Agency securitized mortgage products. The company also has investments in securitized single-family residential and commercial mortgage loans originated by the Company from 1992 to 1998.  The company finances it investments through a combination of repurchase agreements, securitization financing, and equity capital.

Since Dynex Capital is a REIT, 90 percent of all taxable income must go to shareholders. This is what makes REITs so appealing to savvy dividend investors. And in this case, the dividend yield is an impressive 10.68 percent. Another big selling point for Dynex Capital is that it held up relatively well during the financial crisis. The stock lost just over 30 percent, which was nothing compared to most stocks throughout the broader market. There was also a generous yield to make up for those losses. Dynex Capital has since recouped all those losses and more.

Indonesia–and its desire to make more off of its natural resources–has been a thorn in the side of both Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) and Newmont Mining (NEM) this year. That could be changing.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Big competitors for BCE include Rogers Communications (RCI) and Telus (TU), though it also faces niche players such as Public Mobile, Wind Mobile and Mobilicity. Until recently, there was buzz that Verizon (VZ) might enter the market by buying up the latter two, though VZ apparently scrapped plans for Canadian expansion until 2014.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The big news for Madison Square Garden has been the success of its key sports franchises. The New York Knicks basketball team made the playoffs and earned the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Even more importantly, the long-delayed National Hockey League season finally got going in January, helping resurrect what many had feared would be a lost season, sending shares of MSG, as well as Canadian venue/team-owners Rogers Communications (NYSE: RCI  ) and BCE (NYSE: BCE  ) , higher. As it turned out, MSG’s New York Rangers made the playoffs and will go up against the Washington Capitals in the first round. Playoffs are an especially lucrative time for sports viewership, and usually translate into extra profits for the company’s broadcast businesses.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Burrows]

But that does afford some opportunity for new money, which can get in on the 5.29% dividend yield — and a much cheaper stock. Transocean now trades for a bit more than 7 times forward earnings — half as expensive as the broader market.

    #9: Teco Energy (TE)

    TE Dividend Yield: 5.42%

  • [By David Dittman]

Answer: I don’t anticipate a spate of dividend cuts. FirstEnergy Corp’s (NYSE: FE) problems were apparent last fall, when it announced 2013 Q3 numbers. We do have TECO Energy Inc (NYSE: TE) and PG&E Corp (NYSE: PCG) on the UF Dividend Watch List, though the latter is in a much more precarious position than the former.

The regulatory environment is generally improving, as state and federal authorities are beginning to recognize the investment utilities have made over the past half-decade in system reliability and capacity expansion.

Another key supporting dividends is a healthier US economy, which should support better power demand from commercial and industrial customers.

  • [By David Dittman]

TECO Energy Inc (NYSE: TE), a member of the UF Dividend Watch List, was highest at 94.6 percent. AES Corp (NYSE: AES), the January 2014 UF Growth Spotlight, was lowest at 12.4 percent.

  • [By Justin Loiseau]

Around the same time, TECO Energy’s (NYSE: TE  ) Tampa Electric utility requested an even larger average $11.68 bill boost, but only around $1.28 of that accounts for fuel costs. TECO has been behind the times on its return on equity (the single-most important investment indicator for regulated utilities), and previously expected its ROE to clock in at less than 9% for 2013. But TECO’s request was approved in September, and the company can now enjoy 10.25% ROE off its 5.5% increase in regulated revenue.

  • [By John Udovich]

If you are looking for a semiconductor stock that’s focus on an area that’s not so cyclical, mid cap microcontroller (MCU) stock Atmel Corporation (NASDAQ: ATML) could be a good choice – meaning its worth taking a closer look at the stock along with other microcontroller players like Microchip Technology Inc (NASDAQ: MCHP), STMicroelectronics N.V. (NYSE: STM) and Cypress Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: CY). Microcontrollers are programmable and embedded chips that are increasingly hidden inside a all sorts of products these days e.g. if you have an appliance with a LED or LCD screen and a keypad, it contains some kind of microcontroller plus all new automobiles contain at least one and often several. I should mention that we have also recently added Atmel Corporation to our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio and we are down about 5.6% mostly due to the recent market volatility.

The company was formerly known as USA Waste Services, Inc. and changed its name to Waste Management, Inc. in 1998. Waste Management, Inc. was incorporated in 1987 and is based in Houston, Texas.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Damian Illia]

During 2008, Republic Services and Allied Waste merged to create a strong company which could compete with number-one waste management company Waste Management Inc. (WM). It is true this industry has a rather constant nature, as trash volume increases with population growth, urban construction, industrial production and commercial activity. Still, the macroeconomic context during 2008 affected the recently-merged company, having to deal with lower waste volumes and intense price competition. Nevertheless, after this bumpy beginning, the company reached a good profitability. And, although it came to sustain average growth on both gross and operating margins, this tendency has recently decelerated with this margins underperforming in 2012 and 2013.

  • [By Damian Illia]

Furthermore, the company has a wide economic moat largely stemming from three factors: its efficient scale, its high switching costs and its intangible assets. Of the 20 commercial hazardous-waste landfills operational in the U.S., the majority are run by US Ecology and its main competitors Waste Management Inc. (WM), and Clean Harbors Inc. (CLH). With barriers to entry stemming from regulatory permits, and a limited market size, ECOL has managed to achieve an efficient scale in the market with five hazardous waste-sides. The company’s intangible assets consist of long-term regulatory permits, which enable US Ecology to posses a “gatekeeper privilege” regarding barriers to new entrants. In addition, customer switching costs are high, thus further adding to the firm’s ability to sustain growth in the long term.

  • [By Sean Williams]

    Show me the money!
Starting us off this week is refuse and recycling giant Waste Management (NYSE: WM  ) , which on Friday divvied out $0.375 per share to investors, a $0.01 jump from its payout in the previous quarter. Waste Management’s business has been hit recently by weaker commodity prices that hurt its recycling margins, along with consolidation in the refuse business which is also pressuring margins. However, as the clear market-share leader in refuse, a necessity-based business, it continues to wield impressive pricing power that can be used to slowly grow its bottom line. Waste Management’s 3.6% yield should remain an attractive lure for income-seeking investors.
