Top 10 Defensive Companies To Buy Right Now

It’s fun to be right, but that doesn’t always mean it’s fruitful. I was right about Westinghouse Solar Inc. (OTCMKTS:WEST) being a breakout candidate when I explained the chart’s most likely technical outcome. Though it took a little more than a week for WEST to actually perform as expected, it got there. Problem: It got there in spades, solving one problem but creating another. Though I’m still bullish on this solar play, we need a new roadmap.

The chart of WEST below is what it is. Between July and September, the stock was squeezed deeper and deeper into the tip of a wedge, and during the latter part of that period shares made a ceiling at the $0.027 mark. You can also see how Westinghouse Solar wiggled its way above the upper edge of that triangle shape this month, using the 20-day (blue) and 50-day (purple) moving average lines as support to push off of. Though the 100-day moving average line (gray) helped keep the effort at bay for the better part of this month – along with that resistance at $0.027 – once all that resistance did buckle, WEST was catapulted. In retrospect, it was all very “textbook.”

Therefore the situation is still very bullish for investors in physical gold and the gold ETFs (GLD, CEF, and PHYS). Investors interested in leveraging this situation into higher potential profits may also consider buying gold miners such as Randgold (GOLD), Goldcorp (GG), Yamana Gold (AUY), and any of the other gold miners. Finally, those willing to shoulder much larger risks may consider some of the exploration and micro-cap companies that offer significant profits at a high risk such as Chesapeake Gold (CHPGF.PK), Pretium Resources (PVG), Western Copper (WRN), or any other of the junior exploration companies. Though investors should keep in mind that gold mining companies and explorers do not always rise with a rising gold price – do your research before you invest in the miners.

Advisors’ Opinion:

American Campus Communities, Inc. (ACC), an owner, manager, and developer of student housing, decreased 15.2% in the third quarter as the company’s lease rates were weaker than expected. Supply in some of its markets increased, and REITS were hurt in the third quarter from rising yields as the 10-year Treasury yield approached 3% and made dividend yields on many REITs less attractive. However, we continue to believe the company is the best in its industry at developing properties and should improve its yields next year as the market absorbs the excess supply. (David Baron)

American Campus Communities (ACC) made the grade after three insiders at the student housing REIT bought $186,800. Leading the charge was CFO Jonathan Graf, who bought 3,700 shares for $67,700.
