Top 10 Companies To Own For 2015

Next Tuesday, Smith & Wesson (NASDAQ: SWHC  ) will release its latest quarterly results. Despite facing a great deal of controversy following the tragic shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the company hasn’t suffered the drop in business demand that some expected to see, and the stock has continued to perform well despite moves from some investors to divest themselves of their holdings.

Indeed, from a fundamental business perspective, Smith & Wesson has experienced substantial growth recently. That’s consistent with past customer behavior during times of heightened scrutiny of gun control policy, as buyers accelerate purchases in advance of any feared new restrictions on the industry. Let’s take an early look at what’s been happening with Smith & Wesson over the past quarter and what we’re likely to see in its quarterly report.

Top 10 Companies To Own For 2015: Tetraphase Pharmaceuticals Inc (TTPH)

Tetraphase Pharmaceuticals, Inc., incorporated on July 7, 2006, is a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company. The Company’s product candidate, eravacycline, is a fully synthetic tetracycline derivative that the Company are developing as a broad-spectrum intravenous and oral antibiotic for use as a first-line empiric monotherapy for the treatment of multi-drug resistant infections, including multi-drug resistant Gram-negative infections. The Company’s frequently used products, such as Zyvox and Cubicin, are limited to Gram-positive bacteria and thus are rarely used as a first-line empiric monotherapy if broad bacterial coverage is required. During the year ended December 31, 2012, completed a Phase 2 clinical trial of eravacycline with intravenous administration for the treatment of patients with complicated intra-abdominal infections, or cIAI, and are finalizing its pivotal Phase 3 program for eravacycline. In 2012, in vitro experiments, eravacycline has demonstrated the ability to cover a variety of multi-drug resistant Gram-negative, Gram-positive, anaerobic and atypical bacteria, including multi-drug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, the species of Gram-negative bacteria that killed seven patients at the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health.

Gram-positive bacteria that have developed resistance to existing drugs include: Streptococcus pneumoniae that cause pneumonia, ear infections, bloodstream infections and meningitis; Staphylococcus aureus that cause skin, bone, lung and bloodstream infections, and Enterococci that are responsible for infections transmitted in healthcare settings. Gram-negative bacteria that have developed resistance to existing drugs include: Escherichia coli that cause urinary tract, skin and bloodstream infections; Salmonella and Escherichia coli that cause foodborne infections, and Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella spp.

In addition, other a ntibiotics that have been used as first-line empiric monothe! rapies, such as Levaquin, piperacillin/tazobactam, which is marketed by Pfizer as Zosyn, carbapenems, such as Merrem, and imipenem/cilastatin, which is marketed by Merck as Primaxin, have seen their utility as first-line empiric monotherapies diminished as the number of bacterial strains resistant to these therapies has increased. In addition to developing an intravenous formulation of eravacycline, the Company is also developing an oral formulation. A number of previous tetracyclines have been available in both intravenous and oral dosage forms. Infections that are resistant to existing oral drugs are increasingly common, and the Company believe that an intravenous-to-oral step-down therapy in which patients are started on the intravenous formulation of eravacycline and then stepped down to an oral formulation of eravacycline could reduce the length of a patient’s hospital stay or help avoid hospital admission altogether, lowering the overall cost of care for these patien ts.

Another under-$10 biopharmaceutical player that’s starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Tetraphase Pharmaceuticals (TTPH), which using its proprietary chemistry technology creates novel antibiotics for serious and life-threatening multi-drug resistant infections. This stock is off to a strong start in 2013, with shares up 19.4%.

If you take a look at the chart for Tetraphase Pharmaceuticals, you’ll notice that this stock has just started to trend back above its 50-day moving average of $7.76 a share with decent upside volume flows. That move is quickly pushing shares of TTPH within range of breaking out above some key near-term overhead resistance levels that have acted as a ceiling for the stock for the last three months.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in TTPH if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $8.30 to $8.40 a share and then once it takes out more resistance at $8.50 to $9 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that registers near or above its three-month average volume of 62,234 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then TTPH will set up to re-test or possibly take out its all-time high at $9.66 a share. Any high-volume move above that level will then push TTPH into new all-time high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $12 to $13 a share.

Traders can look to buy TTPH off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $7.76 a share, or below more key near-term support levels at $7.37 to $7.02 a share. One can also buy TTPH off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

For the past several years, Berkshire has contrasted its own cost-free float provided by profitable underwriting against the industry’s (unimpressive) tendency to lose money on underwriting while generating net returns from investment income. So far, so good. Less edifying, though, is the repeated contrast of Berkshire’s track record of profitability to State Farm’s…even though, as a mutual company, State Farm’s profitability goals are inherently different from for-profit insurers like Berkshire. It’s true that through year-end 2013, Berkshire’s underwriters have “now operated at an underwriting profit for eleven consecutive years,” but so have ACE (ACE), American Financial (AFG),  AmTrust Financial (AFSI), Arch Capital (ACGL), Chubb (CB), HCC (HCC), Progressive (PGR), RLI (RLI), and W.R. Berkley (WRB), any or all of whom provide a more meaningful comparison than contrasting Berkshire’s results to a company that’s not out to produce a profit in t he first place.

So far, 2014 has been a year of heightened geopolitical risk. Russia has annexed the Crimea region of Ukraine, Syria remains embroiled in a civil war, political protests continue in Egypt and Turkey, and North Korea has once again fired missiles into the sea to protest joint US-South Korea military exercises.

Earlier this month, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, pointed to these simmering geopolitical tensions as an impediment to global economic growth.

Geopolitical risk can affect a variety of asset classes, ranging from energy and gold to bonds and equities. In the energy space, Brent crude, essentially the equivalent of West Texas Intermediate (WTI), traded above $109 a barrel thanks to worries that Russia might make a play for more Ukrainian territory. While WTI also spiked, it finished the week essentially flat following a stronger than expected inventory report from the Energy Information Administration (EIA).< br>
Even as oil prices are on the rise, so is production. In the US, the EIA reports that crude production average 7.5 million barrels per day (BPD) last year, 1 million BPD over 2012 and the highest annual rate since 1989. The agency estimates that production should run about 8.5 million BPD this year and hit 9.6 million BPD next year, the highest level of production since 1970.

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), which produces about 40 percent of the world’s oil, is forecasting similar supply growth. This past January production rose by 28,000 BPD to 29.71 million BPD, largely thanks to increased production from Libya. Including America’s production increase, non-OPEC countries are expected to boost their supply by 1.29 million BPD to 55.43 million BPD.

With consumption forecast to grow by about 1.3 million BPD in 2014, that leaves supply and demand in almost perfect balance, supporting strong oil prices even when and if the cris is in Ukraine abates.

Gold miners are getting hit today, but Barrick Gold (ABX) has bucked the selling despite having its price target lowered by UBS today.

UBS analysts Brian MacArthur and Joshua Wardell explain why they lowered Barrick Gold’s price target to $18.50 from $21.75:

UBS’s precious metals analyst, Edel Tully, believes the gold price push of late has largely arisen from short-covering, rather than the emergence of new buyers. Compounding the difficulties facing the gold demand environment, UBS economists believe the Fed ‘will not alter their tilt toward tapering nor interrupt their debate about when to tighten and how quickly’ given the emergence of encouraging U.S economic data points. Together, Edel Tully believes this lack of fresh demand coupled with the improving U.S economy will result in gold remaining in a range-bound state. UBS forecasts gold prices declining from $1,300/oz to $1,200/oz in 2015.

Shares of Barrick Gold have gained 0.4% to $16.81 today, despite the fact that the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX) has dropped 0.7% to $23.87 and big miners Newmont Mining (NEM) and Goldcorp (GG) have fallen 0.1% and 0.3%, respectively.

For GoPro Inc.(GPRO), now comes the hard part.

Bearish investors are out in full force betting against the video-camera maker’s stock price after it more than doubled throughout its first four days on the public markets. Whether GoPro can convince the skeptics of its future prospects will go a long way in determining the stock’s next move.

  • [By Monica Gerson]

Shares of GoPro (NASDAQ: GPRO) tumbled 13.85% in regular trading session on Wednesday after strong gains following its IPO. GoPro shares slipped 0.33% to $41.90 in after-hours trading.

    2. Short-sellers ruin GoPro’s stock price after four-day rally
I wish we had GoPro’d that insane run that GoPro (NASDAQ: GPRO  ) made in its first days as a publicly traded company — because it’s over. Pessimistic short-sellers who worship the religion of Schadenfreude made sure to fix what they saw as over-excitement about the popular camcorder company, so they sold stocks and nailed the price, sending it down 14% Wednesday.

OK, my last bullish call on ZBB Energy Corporation (NYSEMKT:ZBB) didn’t work out so well. It looks like it was just too soon to expect a bounce from ZBB back on April 2nd when it was still in the shadow of a huge runup and a subsequent pullback. The dust has fully settled now, however, and most of the clues are now pointing in a bullish direction.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Back on March 11th, yours truly opined that the wild bullishness that had carried names like ZBB Energy Corporation (NYSEMKT:ZBB), Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ:PLUG), FuelCell Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:FCEL), and Ballard Power Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:BLDP) to triple digit gains (in just a few days) was coming to a close, and taking profits on any and all of these stocks would be a good idea. It was an idea that went over like a lead balloon, judging from the responses I got. How ridiculous of me to turn bearish on those names! FCEL, PLUG, ZBB, and BLDP were all flying high, and obviously since they soared over the course of the two weeks leading up to that date, they could only keep going higher forever.

For those of you that were lucky enough to read, and act on, my bullish call on ZBB Energy Corporation (NYSEMKT:ZBB) penned one week ago (almost to the hour), then congratulations – you’re up 270%, give or take. Now get out. Seriously. I have a funny feeling that ZBB along with FuelCell Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:FCEL), Ballard Power Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:BLDP), and all the other names in the alternative electricity-production group are seeing their last hurrah today. The smart money is already thinking about getting out now, selling into the strength all the late-comers are creating for FCEL, BLDP, and its peers.
