Top 10 Chemical Companies For 2016

Last weekend, after the whirlwind of the first week in my new job at PIMCO, I reread all my essays written during my previous incarnation here – some 120 of them. Yes, I have masochistic tendencies, which I will explore with my therapist, in hope those tendencies haven’t advanced to a disorder.

Don’t think so, as I was simultaneously listening to Pink: Just Give Me a Reason!

It was a very useful exercise, in part to remind myself of what I said and when I said it, so as to faithfully own my priors going forward. Not that I don’t have the right to change my mind. I am a devout believer of Keynes’ dictum that when presented with new information, a person has not just the right but the duty to change one’s mind. Or in the famous words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

PIMCO is not a little-minds place, but rather a right-answer-wins place. And getting the right answer is often about being willing to openly recast one’s view of how the world works, in the context of one’s prior view, rather than passively dismissing it. There is no shame in recognizing new realities, only in refusing to do so.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Yet, Europe’s leading potash player K+S (NASDAQOTH: KPLUY  ) just said that, because of the upheaval that’s occurred in the market, it was slashing its dividend by 82% for 2013, reducing the payout ratio to just 11% of adjusted after tax earnings, a far cry from the miner’s usual ratio of between 40% and 50%. Could this signal a new era of austerity that will ultimately see Potash, Agrium (NYSE: AGU  ) , and Mosaic (NYSE: MOS  )  end up whacking their payouts, as well?

What: Shares of specialty chemical maker American Vanguard (NYSE: AVD  ) jumped 10% today after the company released earnings.

So what: First-quarter revenue jumped 39% to $121.5 million and adjusted earnings per share nearly doubled to $0.59. Analysts only expected $115.4 million in revenue and earnings of $0.46 per share so the company easily beat on both the top and bottom line.

Margins matter. The more American Vanguard (NYSE: AVD  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That’s why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I’m looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong American Vanguard’s competitive position could be.

UBS analyst Brian MacArthur and team explain why they upgraded Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (POT) to Buy from Neutral today:

    Potash Corp

Potash Corp is positioned to benefit from a significant ramp-up of low cost production through 2017 as its new Rocanville and Picadilly operations enter production. In the near-term the planned closure of Mosaic’s (MOS) Carlsbad operations in January 2015 and the current flood at Uralkali’s Solikamsk-2 mine could remove up to 2.4-3.4Mts of combined capacity from the market and provides the opportunity for Potash Corp to gain more volumes. Furthermore, this could also lead to higher pricing.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Potash Corp. (POT) has risen 1.2% to $35.70 after it was upgraded to Buy from neutral at UBS.
