Top 10 Cheap Companies To Invest In Right Now

Kia offered a teaser photo this week of the look of the “an all-new midsize multi-purpose vehicle” that it will unveil at the New York Auto Show later this month in a photo Thursday.

The description appears to be Kia’s code for “our new minivan.” If you look closely, you can see the rear door handle for a slider just behind the front handle.

As its Sedona minivan aged, Kia kept saying that there would be a successor, that it was not going to just kill it and get out of the segment. As others did leave the slow-growing minivan market — GM, Ford, Hyundai, Chrysler heading to a single model — we had our doubts.

And Kia sold just 7,079 Sedonas last year, down 60% from 17,512 in 2012.

But here “it” is (we suspect it may get a new name along with the new design):

“This global debut will challenge the segment and will offer the functionality to transport as many as eight passengers and their belongings while also serving as a purposeful offering for adventure seekers,” Kia says in a statement.

The big question now: What impact will the closure happen to the fund’s biggest stock holding? As an activist investor, Relational doesn’t take many small positions. It holds 1.5% of Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) shares, for instance, 15% of SPX Corp. (SPW), 3.5% of B/E Aerospace (BEAV) and 4.6% of Timken (TKR).

Jupiterimages Despite the ongoing hype about tablets and smartphones, people are warming up to laptops and desktops again. Industry tracker NPD Group offered up an encouraging report as part of its tracking service last week, showing that U.S. consumer retail PC sales increased 3 percent during the back-to-school period — measuring the 10 weeks through Labor Day week — relative to last year. It’s a welcome bounce for an industry that seemed to have been left for dead in the wake of the mobile computing boom. Consumers flocking to smartphones and tablets had become less interested in standalone laptop and desktop computers. After all, if all you’re using your machine for is checking email, surfing the Web, running cloud-based programs and playing casual games, does it make sense to buy a bulky desktop or fragile laptop? If someone’s computing needs can be satisfied with the smartphone that they already own or a lightweight tablet that’s as little as $100, the choice is pretty clear. The tide appears to be turning. Smartphone sales are still going strong, but their sales growth is decelerating. The news is even more alarming on the tablet front, where sales of Apple’s (AAPL) iconic iPad are starting to slide. Some Things Don’t Compute That top line number, though, doesn’t mean that all PCs are storming back. We’re definitely seeing Macs making a comeback. Mac OS-based products saw their sales spike 14 percent during the back-to-school season since last summer. This isn’t a surprise. Mac sales grew faster than Apple’s iPhone sales in its most recent quarter, more than offsetting declines in its iPad and iPod product lines. Mac sales growth earlier this year was primarily the handiwork of strong international gains, but the platform’s starting to experience a renaissance closer to home. We’re also seeing Google’s (GOOG) Chrome gaining ground as an operating system. Chromebooks experienced a 37 percent spike in sales. This also isn’t a surprise. Chromebooks l

Krisztian Bocsi/Bloomberg via Getty Images SAN FRANCISCO — Holly Riggle, a 29-year-old white-collar worker from Ohio, is just the kind of everyday customer Apple (AAPL) would love to have for its new iPhone 6, which launches Friday. But Riggle is sticking to her Android smartphone, calling Apple less “original” than it was under former chief executive Steve Jobs. She’s one of the 16 percent of respondents in a Reuters/Ipsos poll who said Apple had become somewhat or much less cool in the last two years. By comparison, some 11 percent of respondents said that Android had lost some sheen in the same time frame. In a similar poll a year ago, 14.3 percent of 1,379 people surveyed thought Apple had lost its cool image between 2011 and 2012. While still a juggernaut, with analysts expecting sales of around 9 million iPhone 6s in its launch weekend, Apple may be losing some of its shine, according to the poll. More Americans feel that Apple has lost its “coolness” quotient than has the Android brand, according to the poll, conducted Sept. 8-13. When questioned on how they perceive five popular technology brands — Apple, Android, Microsoft (MSFT), Dell and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) — respondents gave the highest coolness factor rating to the Android brand, which includes devices such as Samsung and others that run on Google’s (GOOG) mobile operating software.

[I]t’s not surprising that Apple doesn’t have the same cachet and coolness that it once did.

Gilead should gain FDA approval shortly for its all-oral HPV treatment that combines Sovaldi with another drug. While the statement makes it sound like there won’t be a price increase, that’s not really the case. The plan seems to be to price the Sovaldi combination at the current price of Sovaldi plus the price of the companion drug.

The New Jersey-based drugmaker reported second-quarter earnings that were comfortably ahead of our expectations, thanks to better-than-expected performance on the top line and continued tight cost controls. Regarding the former, although worldwide revenues were down 1% year over year, to $10.9 billion, this was $300 million ahead of our estimate, as stronger gains in the company’s core franchises helped to mitigate generic competition and declines in Hepatitis-C drugs.

See, as well as URZ and URG have done and are doing (URRE not so much), it looks like the short-term rally I first spotted a little more than a couple of months ago has fully run its course, and now these names are setting up a pullback.

What I’m talking about is a bullish commentary I penned back on November 26th regarding Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ), Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE), and Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG). All three stocks were perking up, and more than that, the buzz surrounding URG, URRE, and URZ was getting louder. More often than not, when the fervor and bullish action and chatter reaches the levels they had reached a month ago, an explosion is right around the corner.

    Meridian Growth Fund performance

Compass Minerals (CMP) is a leading producer of rock salt and specialty potash fertilizer. Its unique collection of resource assets has helped the company generate historically high returns on capital. We invested in Compass as we believed that earnings were due to turn after four years of weak road salt demand driven by mild Northeast winters and production problems at its potash mines. During 2013 the potash industry was rocked by the potential collapse of a European cartel, which led to falling potash prices. Facing significant uncertainty for the future of the potash market, we sold the stock.

We continue to remain focused on individual stock selection and portfolio construction that identifies quality companies that we believe are experiencing temporary disruptions to their businesses. These disruptions enable us to buy the businesses at attractive prices and provide the portfolio with what we believe is an attractive risk-reward profile for our shareholders.

Compass Minerals (NYSE: CMP  ) is a sleepy producer of a boring product: rock salt. But it has a strong competitive advantage. It owns the world’s largest rock salt mine, which luckily is conveniently located near the major deicing markets of the Great Lakes region. This combination of a great mining resource and ideal location provide the company with a wide, crocodile-filled competitive moat.
