Top 10 Building Product Companies For 2014

One of my very favorite defense contractors reported earnings this past week: Raytheon (NYSE: RTN  ) . Its earnings “beat the Street.” Investors cheered. But I’m still not buying the stock. And now I’ll tell you why.

Reporting earnings for fiscal Q4 and full-year 2014 Thursday, Raytheon announced that:

Fiscal 2013 sales declined 3%, capped by a veritable collapse in Q4 sales — down 9%, but operating profit margins actually gained about 20 basis points, rising to 12.4% for the year. Net income climbed 6% as a result, and profits per diluted share grew 9% to $6.16, helped by a share-count reduction of 10 million.

So far, so good — and it even gets better. Raytheon produced $2.4 billion in cash from operations in 2013, a 22% increase over 2012 operating cash flow. Combined with a modest reduction in cash outflows for capital investment, this translated into free cash flow of $2.1 billion, or a 30% improvement over 2012 FCF.

As a result, Raytheon’s now generating about 5% more real, cash profit than it reports as net income under GAAP. Its true valuation is correspondingly cheaper. Rather than the 15.4 “P/E” ratio that you see as the stock’s valuation on Yahoo! Finance, it may be better to think of the stock as selling for just 14.4 times free cash flow. Problem is — that’s still not cheap enough.

Severn Trent’s share price has had a flat 12 months, aside from a bout of takeover excitement in May, which pushed the stock to a 12-month high of 20.90p. But management rejected the bid, claiming it failed to recognize the value in the business, and the excitement trickled away. Now it trades at 7.20p. That still represents of rise of 23% over three years and 29% over five years, against 18% and 26% for the FTSE 100 respectively. So there is growth to be had, although being a utility, most investors will focus on the income. Right now, Severn Trent yields 4.41%. That is less than fellow water company United Utilities Group (UUGRY), which yields 5.05%, but still comfortably above the FTSE 100 average of 3.54%.

But a bigger reason to sell, in my opinion, right now, is a change in the risk/reward profile of the market as a whole. The recent sell off in momentum stocks—which now looks like it’s spreading to consumer discretionary leaders—makes me want to raise cash for the inevitable bounce back in these stocks. I don’t know when we might see that bounce—and I’m not buying yet, since I think we’re still in “catch a falling knife” territory. But when stocks such as FireEye (FEYE), or Palo Alto Networks (PANW), or Incyte (INCY), or Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) do bounce, the gains will be bigger and quicker than those in holding Citigroup.

One under-$10 specialty pharmaceutical player that’s starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is TherapeuticsMD (TXMD), which is focused on the sales, marketing and development of branded and generic pharmaceutical and OTC products primarily for the women’s health care market. This stock has been in play with the bulls so far in 2013, with shares up 56%.

If you take a look at the chart for TherapeuticsMD, you’ll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong over the last three months, with shares soaring higher from its low of $2.03 to its recent high of $5.27 a share. During that uptrend, shares of TXMD have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of TXMD within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in TXMD if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.93 a share to its 52-week high at $5.27 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 450,661 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then TXMD will set up to enter new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $6 to $7 a share.

Traders can look to buy TXMD off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at 4.30 a share, or near its 50-day moving average of $4.15 a share. One can also buy TXMD off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Gene J. Puskar/AP WASHINGTON and NEW YORK — Comcast (CMCSA) sought to rebut critics of its planned $45.2 billion takeover of Time Warner Cable (TWC), arguing that newcomers such as Google and Apple would ensure competition in both Internet and video markets. In a 175-page filing with the Federal Communications Commission that coincides with the formal launch of the controversial deal, Comcast argued that either all or key areas of its and Time Warner Cable’s businesses compete with an “array of sophisticated companies with national or even global footprints.” The U.S. Department of Justice will conduct the antitrust review and the FCC will examine whether the deal is in the public interest. Comcast has pledged to divest some cable subscribers so the combined company would serve just under 30 percent of the U.S. pay television video market. The company said it would serve between 20 and 40 percent of the U.S. broadband subscribers. MoffettNathanson research estimates the company would cover about 33 percent of the high-speed Internet market. Opponents have raised concerns that the combined company will have too much power over what Americans can watch on television and do online, becoming a powerful buyer of Web and pay-TV content. The cable companies are expected to face those concerns on Wednesday when their officials, Comcast’s executive vice president David Cohen and Time Warner Cable’s finance chief Arthur Minson, testify in Congress. In Tuesday’s filing, Comcast argues that such concerns are unwarranted, especially given the growing competitiveness of both the video and internet markets. The filing names Amazon.com (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT), Verizon Communications (VZ), Netflix (NFLX), Dish Network (DISH) and DirecTV (DTV) as companies making progress over the last decade in competing against Comcast with video content, while cable operators have lost subscribers. “In the evolving video marketplace in which these comp
