Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Buy Right Now

The share price of The Boeing Company (BA) plummeted as the company’s next-generation 787 Dreamliner was once again in the news for the wrong reason. The Dreamliner operated by Ethiopian Airlines caught fire while it was parked at London’s Heathrow Airport. Meanwhile another 787 operated by Thomson Airways on way to Orlando, Fla., had to return to Manchester after unspecified malfunctions.

Fortunately, both the incidents did not cause any injuries. The only casualty it seems was Boeing’s stock price which suffered the biggest drop in two years.

The much-hyped 787 Dreamliner was marred by glitches from the very beginning. First, its delayed launch and then the two battery overheating incidents in Jan 2013 that grounded the entire fleet of 50 Boeing 787 airplanes. However, in Apr 2013, The Boeing Company received the green light from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration for the 787 Dreamliner’s redesigned battery.

One can relate the current fi re to Boeing 787’s previous battery issues. However, the location of the fire proves that this incident is no way interlinked to the previous series of glitches and small technical problems.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Samsung (SSNLF) is facing increased scrutiny from Apple (AAPL) and is concerned about its own over-reliance on Google. That’s left it with few choices, so it’s increasingly looking to go it alone, a risky proposition.

  • [By Tom Taulli]

However, investors should still be cautious. Let’s face it, there are a variety of cloud companies that could be vulnerable to disruption, such as the ad tech space. Competition is intense, with mega players like Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG) putting enormous pressure on competitors. Oh, and Facebook (FB) and Twitter (TWTR) have recently launched their own offerings. (I noted the impact of all this in a post on Millennial Media (MM), which has imploded.)

Shares of Procter & Gamble have dropped 3.2% during the past 12 months, lagging Unilever’s (UL) 2.5% rise, Colgate-Palmolive’s (CL) 8.7% advance and Kimberly-Clark’s (KMB) 3.1% gain.

  • [By Kashafa Investment Research]

What works in P&G’s advantage is the fact that the company is already ahead of its peers in the emerging markets. As of 2012, P&G had sales of $33 billion in developing markets as compared to $24 billion for Unilever (UL) and $10 billion for Colgate (CL). This competitive edge over peers will sustain as P&G has product quality, innovation and has a significant marketing budget given its comfortable cash position.

The 4.4% yield offered by Philip Morris  (NYSE: PM  )  is well-covered at 1.5x, which seems to be very sensible and shows that the company is not over-extending itself when it comes to payments to shareholders. This makes the income from the stock even more sustainable and highlights its potential as a sound defensive play.

Question: I recently purchased Chevron (NYSE: CVX) at $113 and it has run to $126. Is it prudent to take some profits?

Answer: If Chevron has come to represent an outsized portion of your portfolio, yes. If you’re diversified by sector and company, I’d say let this winner run.

    Stocks to Sell: McDonald’s (MCD)

Strange as it may seem, McDonald’s (MCD) stock hit a record high very recently even as the fast-food chain struggles with ongoing sales weakness in the U.S. MCD stock touched $103.78 this week as part of its 6% gain for the year.

Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg via Getty Images It’s apparently never too early to have a hamburger. While most chains wait until 10 or 11 a.m. to begin offering their signature burgers, early risers will be able to skip straight to lunch at thousands of participating Burger King (BKW) locations. The fast food giant’s betting that some morning commuters want more than just a breakfast burrito or a ham and egg sandwich for breakfast. Later this month Burger King is rolling out a “burgers for breakfast” campaign across 5,000 of its restaurants, offering its signature Whopper as well as a few other burgers and chicken sandwiches in the morning. Assuming that you don’t want hash browns on the side, fries will also be made available. So will apple pie. Whopper, BK King and Original Fried Chicken sandwiches will be part of the chain’s breakfast offerings. Will it confuse diners? Will the move complicate matters for employees manning the prep tables and fryers? Will the great variety stall patrons as they ponder the menu when it’s time to order, creating longer wait times for food? The questions won’t be answered right away, but Burger King doesn’t have much of a choice. Breakfast is big business, and chains have to stand out one way or another. Another Shot in the Battle for Breakfast It isn’t easy to make a difference in the morning. Just ask Wendy’s (WEN), which has already retreated twice from the national breakfast market over the past decade. The first time it thought that it could set itself apart by offering sausage gravy-soaked biscuits and breakfast versions of its then-popular Frescata sandwiches. More recently it tried to stick closer to the McDonald’s (MCD) playbook with oatmeal, breakfast burritos and biscuit sandwiches. That didn’t pan out either, and last year it discontinued breakfast at all but less than 10 percent of its restaurants. It’s not just the burger flippers hoping to woo diners with caffeinated mornings. Subway — the world’s largest restaur

Since last year’s announcement of Federal Reserve tapering we have been arguing that the economy can go either of two ways: high growth or a slip back into recession. It all would depend on the Federal Reserve’s timing on winding down its stimulus program.

The period to watch is when the Fed’s bond buying program is reduced to $45 billion, which is where we are today.  That level was held up previously until December 2012 as part of its Operation Twist, which involved selling $45 billion a month of short-term Treasuries to fund the purchase of long-term bonds. Before the Fed nearly doubled the stimulus program last year, your correspondent (who studied the Great Depression and wrote an economics thesis at Georgetown University on the subject) was becoming increasingly alarmed at the various deflationary signals that were appearing.

During this period, growth in GDP had been stalling, while the output gap had been widening. Meanwhile, Europe had already been suffering from an economic contraction. Additionally, oil and gold were losing value, and US industrial activity was declining. And sales at economic bellwethers such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE: WMT) and McDonalds Corp (NYSE: MCD) had disappointed investors. Furthermore, large investors were considering shorting high-yield bonds and the government’s sequestration seemed sure to stifle growth in economic activity.

But just as it seemed the world was about to fall apart, the stimulus resulting from the Fed’s $85 billion per month bond-purchasing program, which includes both mortgage-backed securities and Treasuries, began to be felt in the real economy.
