Money manager and income specialist Dave Fabian discusses four important current trends that income-oriented ETF investors need to consider; he also highlights the top funds to take advantage of these opportunities.

Steve Halpern: We’re here with Dave Fabian. How are you doing Dave?

Dave Fabian: I’m doing very well, Steve, thanks so much for having me back.

Steve Halpern: Since the last time we spoke, you changed the name of your money management company from Fabian Capital to FMD Capital. Could you update us on the change?

Dave Fabian: Absolutely, we’re actually really excited about it. The name change really came about because we’re expanding our brand more on a national stage.

We’re starting to do quite a bit more institutional research and the like, and we thought it would be better for a lot of our followers and clients to have a little bit of a different name change out there in the marketplace, and of course, along with that we also introduced a new portfolio that we’re really excited about for our money management clients.

Question: Is Berkshire too big to fail? How about DF and how does it impact insurance and Wells Fargo (WF) and Goldman Sachs (GS)?

Warren: It won’t affect it to my knowledge. Capital ratios for long banks at high levels and affects return on equity. Cap ratios increase and return on equity will increase. Banking in the U.S. is stronger than in the past 20 years. Compared to the EU or 20 years ago, it’s dramatically stronger. Don’t worry about banking being the cause of the next bubble. Usually we don’t get to a bubble the same way we got to the last one. I feel good about our investments at MNT and WFC. We won’t earn as much return on equity because the rules change.

Home Trust Bancshares (HTBI) is another example of a cheap, well-financed community bank that has the potential for strong performance over the next couple of years. While the bank’s nonperforming assets are a little above average at 3.87% of total assets, HTBI has plenty of excess capital. The equity-to-assets ratio is more than 20 as of the end of the third quarter, and HTBI has been using its capital to buy back HTBI shares below book value.

It’s easy for U.S. investors to paint Canadian banks with a single brush-stroke, as the differences in the banking system helped keep Bank of Montreal and its peers safer during the financial crisis five years ago.
