Manchester United (NYSE: MANU  ) shares have dropped since the organization reported an expected revenue decrease in the first quarter from missing out on the Champions League this year. It always pays to check in on what management teams have to say following a quarterly earnings report, and Manchester United is no exception — so let’s examine five interesting nuggets this team offered during its most recent call.

  • [By Dan Dzombak]

Manchester United (NYSE: MANU  ) has been weak in the field and in the stock market this year. On the field, the Premier League soccer team had a slow start to the season after last year’s seventh-place finish. The stock is up slightly in 2014, but it is down 6% over the last 12 months. One billionaire fund manager has raised his stake in the team even as the majority owners of Manchester United lower theirs. Read on to find out why Ron Baron is betting big on Manchester United.

Under the deal with Manchester United (MANU), Adidas will provide uniforms for all the club’s teams from the 2015 – 2016 season. Adidas will also be the exclusive worldwide distributor of Manchester United branded merchandise.

Manchester United (MANU), together with its subsidiaries, is engaged in the ownership and operation of Manchester United Football Club, a professional football club in the United Kingdom. This stock closed up 4.1% to $17.50 in Monday’s trading session.

    Monday’s Volume: 973,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 48,028

    Volume % Change: 1099%

From a technical perspective, MANU surged sharply higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $16.87 with monster upside volume. This spike higher on Monday pushed shares of MANU into breakout territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $17 to $17.34. Market players should now look for a continuation move higher in the short-term if MANU manages to take out Monday’s intraday high of $17.50 with strong upside volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MANU as long as it’s trending above Monday’s low of $16.80 and then once it sustains a move or close above $17.50 with volume that hits near or above 48,028 shares. If that move starts soon, then MANU will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $18.48 to its 52-week high of $19.

Shares of TCF Financial Corporation (NYSE: TCB) have recorded a year-to-date return of 26.6%. Impressive organic growth, balance sheet repositioning and strong capital deployment activities of the company were primary factors behind the growth. However, we are not so optimistic about these positives translating into further price appreciation down the road as there will likely be significant pressure on its top line.

I always find it very interesting to see what long-term investors are selling in a given quarter. Kahn Brothers lightened up on many financials that have shot up and now trade above book value. The firm sold out of Flushing Financial (FFIC), TCF Financial (TCB) and Dime Community Bank (DCOM). Khan apparently shares my views on the large-cap drug stocks, easing up on both Pfizer (PFE) and Bristol Meyers (BMY) over the summer. Khan Brothers also sold the last of the Travelers shares (TRV) it has owned since 2008 at more than twice the purchase price.

My second featured aggressive financial is ICICI Bank Limited-ADR (IBN), an ADR (American Depository Receipt) headquartered in India. This company is the largest private sector bank in India. Despite economic and political turmoil, equity markets performed well across the board in September of 2013 and over the trailing twelve months. The September gains reversed losses in August and also resulted in positive overall quarterly performance with a number of major indexes moving further into record territory. After disturbing the markets in May and June with comments that they may taper Quantitative Easing (QE), the Fed surprised investors with an announcement that it would not reduce its asset purchases in the near-term.
