Top 10 Casino Stocks To Watch For 2019

Shares of casino operators with ties to Macau were sent lower after news surfaced recently that hotels on the tiny Chinese island of Hainan might begin offering low-stakes baccarat.

Where blackjack and poker are the preferred card games in Western casinos, baccarat is the favorite among China’s VIP gamblers. And because Macau is the only place in China where gaming is legal, some believe that allowing it anywhere else will siphon off high rollers, which will hurt casino companies like Las Vegas Sands (NYSE:LVS), Melco Resorts & Entertainment (NASDAQ:MLCO), and Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ:WYNN), which all derive the bulk of their revenue from Macau.

But the fears look to be overblown because any low-stakes games on Hainan wouldn’t be attractive to the VIPs the casinos count on, and the volume of gaming would likely be a tiny fraction of the $32 billion Macau generated last year.

Four months into 2018, just take a step back and process what your portfolio has had to endure.

Two major gap downs (early February and mid-March) in the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average thanks to trade war talk that seemingly came out of nowhere. A more blunt talking Fed chairman in Jerome Powell than his predecessors Janet Yellen and Ben Bernanke. The market has not responded well to Powell, at all. A rout in the one-time market darlings known as FAANG (Facebook (FB) , Amazon (AMZN) , Apple (AAPL) , Netflix (NFLX) , and Alphabet (GOOGL) ) stocks. Whereas these companies could do no wrong in 2017, they are now viewed by many on Wall Street as overvalued and poised to be regulated by the government. Many “value” stocks have continued to get cheaper even with a market experiencing heightened volatility. General Electric (GE) , historically a beacon of safety due to its solid dividend, has shed 25%. The company’s financial troubles haven’t helped its investment case, either.  The VIX Index, commonly known as Wall Street’s fear guage, has hovered above 20 for much of the year. For most of 2017, the VIX Index was below 10 as investors feared very little.  Gold prices have stayed in a tight trading range despite a more nervous stock market. Who would have thought.  Bitcoin prices have crashed 38%, leading a plunge across the once smoking hot cryptocurrency space.

Be honest with yourself: how the market has reacted so far this year has surprised you. And that’s OK if it has, successful investing isn’t easy. But, the ramped up uncertaintly underscores why you need top-notch guidance and education like never before.

Top 10 Medical Stocks To Watch For 2019: Fitbit, Inc.(FIT)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Evan Niu, CFA]

Shares of Fitbit (NYSE:FIT) fell 7% yesterday following Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) unveiling of the Apple Watch Series 4. The Mac maker’s popular smartwatch sports a redesign as well as the ability to take electrocardiograms (ECGs), a major health feature that differentiates Apple Watch from any other health-oriented wearable device. Series 4 also includes other features that help users monitor their hearts.

  • [By Daniel Sparks]

Even as smartwatches continue to gain traction and take market share from basic fitness wristbands like Fitbit’s (NYSE:FIT) Charge, Alta, and Flex devices, Fitbit is investing aggressively in the category. Today, Fitbit unveiled Charge 3, a new version of its highest-end fitness wristband.

  • [By Demitrios Kalogeropoulos]

A 20% spike in the fitness wearables niche was particularly good news, considering rival Fitbit (NYSE:FIT) saw its unit volume plunge during the period. Like Fitbit, Garmin has noticed a dramatic shift in consumer demand toward more premium trackers like smartwatches. Yet Garmin’s bigger product line scratched that itch for fitness fans thanks to popular new releases like the Forerunner and Edge franchises. Its lineup allowed fitness sales to rise 20% even as Fitbit’s revenue fell 18%.

  • [By Evan Niu, CFA]

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Fitbit (NYSE:FIT) have emerged as the two clear market leaders in smartwatches, with Apple Watch leading the way but Fitbit’s growing portfolio of smartwatches helping it secure the No. 2 spot while simultaneously driving a turnaround for the smaller company. Meanwhile, Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) subsidiary Google has ceded share, although the search giant is expected to jump in directly with a first-party Pixel Watch in the near future. Rumors of the company’s foray into the market were only fueled by recent news that Google acquired smartwatch tech from Fossil and is hiring for wearables design and engineering execs.

  • [By Chris Neiger]

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) became the world’s top maker of wearable tech just a few quarters ago, when it outpaced Fitbit (NYSE: FIT) for the first time. Apple Watch sales are still a small portion of its total revenues (the company doesn’t break out Watch sales in its reports), but the growth rate of the consumer IoT device market indicates that there’s still plenty of room for Apple to expand its wearable business.

  • [By Timothy Green]

The pieces of Fitbit’s (NYSE:FIT) turnaround are falling into place. The wearables company has found success with its inexpensive Versa smartwatch, selling more than 1 million units within two months of launch. And its recently announced Charge 3 fitness tracker brings enough improvements to the table to potentially return that part of the business to growth.

The one exception is Beazer Homes USA (NYSE:BZH). While most companies are still showing strong home sales and growing net orders, Beazer’s fiscal third-quarter results showed some cracks in its growth trajectory.

Top 5 Low Price Stocks To Watch For 2019

Ford (NYSE:F) is known for its attractive valuation, it currently trades at around 7 times its 2017 projected earnings and has an attractive dividend yield of 5.36 percent. It also has a very low price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) compared to most other companies on the S&P 500. The stock trades at around $11 during the time I am writing this. However, after digging a little deeper, I have found that the future looks bearish for Ford.

The automobile industry is known to be a very cyclical industry and I, along with many other people, believe that the cycle has peaked after years of high demand. We are witnessing a downtrend in automobile demand. In March, US auto sales fell 1.6 percent; 1.56 million cars and trucks were sold in March, falling below the projected sales of 1.62 million cars and trucks. Sales are down 1.6 percent compared to the same month last year. Ford only sold 236,250 cars; this is a 7 percent decrease in sales compared to the prior month.

Trump’s Treasury Secretary Cool on ‘Too Big to Fail’ Process

Here’s How Trump’s Association Plans Might REALLY Work

The number of Americans hit by an already record-setting flu season continues to rise as hospitalization rates hit new highs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.

Hospitals are more crowded than in the 2014-2015 flu season, which marked the previous record when 710,000 Americans needed medical care to beat the illness, said Anne Schuchat, the CDC’s acting director. The agency also reported the deaths of an additional 16 children over the past week, bringing the total number of pediatric deaths attributed to the flu to 53 so far this season. Half of them had no additional health complications that would have placed them at elevated risk, Schuchat said.

(Related: CFOs Notice the Flu)

“This season is a somber reminder of why flu is one of the world’s biggest health challenges,” she said in a conference call. “Our latest data indicate flu is still high and widespread across most of the nation—and increasing overall.”

In October 2017, I predicted that Insys Therapeutics (NASDAQ:INSY) could be the biggest comeback story of 2018.For a while, it looked like I was on the right track. Insys stock soared in the fourth quarter of 2017. By early January, it was one of the hottest marijuana stocks on the market. Then the momentum evaporated.

Some people picture rows of cannabis plants growing in a greenhouse when they think of marijuana stocks. While that’s an appropriate image to have in mind for many marijuana stocks, it’s a different story for others. 22nd Century Group (NYSEMKT:XXII) and Insys Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:INSY) are good examples.

Why Ultra Petroleum, Intrexon, and News Corp. Slumped Today

Friday was a relatively quiet day on Wall Street, with major market benchmarks finishing narrowly mixed for the session. Weekly gains were still substantial for the indexes, however, as investors grew confident that the economy is walking the fine line between avoiding a recession and growing so fast that it spurs the Federal Reserve to tighten monetary policy aggressively. Yet even though most stocks held up well, some individual companies had bad news that sent their shares lower. Ultra Petroleum (NASDAQ:UPL), Intrexon (NYSE:XON), and News Corp. (NASDAQ:NWSA) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

Ultra looks less energetic

Shares of Ultra Petroleum fell 13% as the natural gas-focused exploration and production company continued to lose ground following Thursday morning’s release of its first-quarter financial report. In that report, Ultra said that first-quarter production rose 13% to 72.3 billion cubic feet-equivalent, but the company reduced its operated rig fleet from seven rigs to four. Rising prices helped the company’s revenue from its oil and condensates production, but falling natural gas prices weighed on performance. Yet investors have been increasingly nervous about Ultra’s financial situation, and even though the gas company successfully emerged from bankruptcy less than a year ago, there’s still the potential for Ultra to find itself in trouble again if the energy markets don’t cooperate.

Intrexon slows down

Intrexon stock plunged nearly 20% after the biotech reported its first-quarter results. The company said that revenue was down 18%, and net losses widened from the year-ago period. Most of the decline on the top line stemmed from reduced revenue from collaborations and licensing, with the company deciding to redeploy some of its research and development services that it had previously used for what it calls exclusive channel collaborations toward more favorable relationships for Intrexon. The challenges are just the latest in a series of setbacks for the company, and with repeated failures to replace disappearing sales, investors are losing patience with Intrexon despite its growth opportunities.

News Corp. struggles with the digital shift

Finally, shares of News Corp. lost 8.5%. Fiscal third-quarter financial results included 6% revenue gains, with the company emphasizing the strength of its real-estate platform holdings in the release. Yet even though initiatives to expand digital audiences for key publications like The Wall Street Journal were fairly successful, the offsetting slowdowns for newsstand sales continued to weigh on results. Some long-term investors believe that News Corp. can come through this transformative change for the industry stronger than ever, but it’s still likely to take years longer for the situation to play out fully before News Corp. can find new pathways toward strong growth.

Top 5 Warren Buffett Stocks For 2019

Although we didn’t get any new details about Berkshire’s(NYSE:BRK-A)(NYSE:BRK-B) succession plan at the company’s annual meeting, Warren Buffett emphasized that the right team is in place to continue the company’s winning strategy. Here are the details of what he had to say.

A full transcript follows the video.

This video was recorded on May 7, 2018.

Michael Douglass: Let’s turn to succession. This is an issue that pops up, I would say, annually, but frankly, it’s a lot more often than that. Warren Buffett is in his upper 80s — he’s 87, to be more precise. Charlie Munger, his vice chairman and partner in crime, is 94 years old. So, it’s natural for people to ask, what happens after both of you are no longer running Berkshire Hathaway? And, per usual, it seems, we didn’t really get any new details on that.

Matt Frankel: We’ve gotten enough details, I feel, for the time being. We both hope that Buffett and Munger both live well into their hundreds.

Top 5 Warren Buffett Stocks For 2019: U.S. Silica Holdings, Inc.(SLCA)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

U.S. Silica Holdings (NYSE:SLCA) has long been the standout company in the frack sand business. Its size and financial strength allowed it to weather the drop in oil prices better than its peers and positioned it well for the recent growth phase. This past quarter, the company expanded its universe by acquiring another mineral mining business, but it is taking some risk in doing this. Thankfully, demand for frack sand remains high, as evidenced by the company’s most recent earnings results.

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

The stock chart says that shares of U.S. Silica Holdings (NYSE:SLCA) have lost one-quarter of their value in 2018 and 47% in the last year alone. The frack sand leader’s operational performance in 2017 says that doesn’t make any sense.

  • [By Joseph Griffin]

U.S. Silica (NYSE:SLCA) had its price objective trimmed by Morgan Stanley from $47.00 to $43.00 in a report issued on Wednesday. The firm currently has a buy rating on the mining company’s stock.

Despite posting a sharp recovery in operations in 2017 compared to 2016, frack sand supplier U.S. Silica (NYSE:SLCA) just can’t seem to earn the respect of Wall Street analysts. Shares have fallen 22% in the last year. Some of that is easy to understand considering how badly the company (and the industry as a whole) overshot market demand in the past, which crashed sand prices and wiped out profitability. But I think there’s enough evidence that management has learned valuable lessons and put them into practice this time around.

Top 10 Undervalued Stocks To Watch Right Now

Value investors get a bad rap. Sometimes, value investing is referred to as “cigar butt” investing, in that picking up cheap, undervalued stocks is equivalent to picking up mostly smoked cigars off of the sidewalk. A good friend and colleague of mine used to call me a “dumpster diver”. Guilty.

Why value? Personally, I hate overpaying. The old Wall Street maxim “buy low, sell high” is in direct conflict with “buy high, sell higher”. Typically, value stocks are less volatile than growth stocks. That doesn’t mean they’re less risky.

I’m not going to argue the outperformance of growth versus value. Sometimes growth outperforms. Sometimes value outperforms. I’m also not going to get lost in the weeds of grandfather of value investing Benjamin Graham’s notion of intrinsic value and margin of safety.

What I will do is point out three key indicators that will get the ball rolling in evaluating a value stock.

1. Forward P/E
I’ve found that the most useful metric used in determining a stock’s value is the price-to-earnings ratio (P/E). A stock’s P/E ratio measures its price relative to the underlying business’s earnings per share (EPS). The trailing P/E measures past earnings while the forward P/E is calculated with projected earnings. The forward P/E is my go-to valuation metric. A low forward P/E is an indicator of the marketplace’s confidence in the ability of the company to deliver on the earnings forecast. The lower the number, the less confident the market is, and thus the cheaper the stock.

Top 10 Undervalued Stocks To Watch Right Now: Ultra Petroleum Corp.(UPL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Our peer group is up an average of 46% over the past 4 weeks in response to a 30% rebound in the 12-month strip NYMEX oil price. Some of the largest gainers include Hold and Sell rated stocks that we would not chase such asDenbury Resources (Sell, +138%), Halcon Resources (HK) (Sell, +147%), Jones Energy (JONE) (Hold, +166%), Rex Energy (REXX) (Sell, +60%), Sanchez Energy (SN) (Hold, +93%), Ultra Petroleum (UPL) (Sell, +61%), andWhiting Petroleum (Hold, +103%), which have outperformed the E&P Index (+32%) over the same time period. Balance sheets and/or well level returns remain challenged for these companies despite improved oil prices. While we believe oil markets should re-balance over the next 12 to 15 months, the recent recovery to $40 could reverse during 2Q16 as bloated inventories continue to rise, new volumes from Iran pressure an oversupplied market, and a highly anticipated decline in non-OPEC supply (especially in the U.S.), is not as steep as expected. The risk of an oil price retracement, which would significantly pressure the recent out-performers, outweighs the upside in these stocks, in our view. However, we are raising our target prices on Buy ratedAnadarko Petroleum ($54 from $48), Concho Resources (CXO) ($120 from $109), Matador Resources (MTDR) ($22 from $21),Noble Energy (NBL) ($40 from $34), SM Energy (SM) ($22 from $15), Rice Energy ($14 from $12), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) ($155 from $135),Continental Resources ($32 from $28), and Parsley Energy (PE) ($24 from $23). We believe our Buy-rated stocks are better positioned to weather challenging oil markets.

As energy commodity prices have sold off in recent months, so too have the E&P stocks that pull those resources out of the ground. And Ultra Petroleum (UPL) has been no exception. The good news is that you don’t need to be an expert technical trader to figure out why this stock looks toxic here — the setup in shares of Ultra Petroleum is about as simple as they get.

UPL is bouncing its way lower in a textbook downtrending channel, a price setup that’s formed by a pair of parallel trendlines that have kept UPL range-bound since April. The price channel in UPL identifies the high-probability range for shares to stay within, and so, with shares pressing up against resistance for the eighth time since this price channel kicked off, it makes sense to be a seller on the next bounce lower.

This label expansion follows the initial FDA approval of Cabometyx in April 2016 for the treatment of patients with advanced RCC who have previously received anti-angiogenic therapy.

Hot Cheap Stocks To Own For 2019

Japan’s trade recovery powered into 2018, with exports and imports registering strong growth. The increase in imports resulted in the first monthly trade deficit since May 2017.

HighlightsThe value of exports rose 12.2 percent in January from a year earlier (forecast +9.4%).Imports grew 7.9 percent (forecast +7.7%).The January trade balance was a deficit of 943.4 billion yen (forecast -1 trillion yen).Export volumes rose 9.2 percent from a year earlier.Key Takeaways

Japan enjoyed a strong export recovery in 2017 that helped push the nation’s economy to the longest expansion in nearly 30 years. Rising imports, a sign of improving domestic demand, indicate the Bank of Japan is making progress in its efforts to generate a self-sustaining economic recovery. A surging yen, though, is a risk. It will make imports cheaper, weighing on inflation, while cutting into exporters’ profits.

Top 5 Undervalued Stocks To Watch For 2019

Last week, I wrote an article detailing how Crescent Point Energy Corporation (CPG) not only has perhaps the most economic collection of assets in Canada on a profit-investment ratio basis but is also the most undervalued in its peer group on a 2018 EV/DACF basis. However, in order for undervaluation to be resolved, investors need to care. After two dividend cuts and a poorly communicated large equity financing (immediately after a new commitment to organic growth), Crescent Point has soured relations with both institutional and retail investors.

The company, however, has multiple upside catalysts that could serve to restore investor interest in the stock and remedy its chronic undervaluation. These catalysts should play out over the next 12 months, and the upside for Crescent Point is substantial given where it is trading relative to its peers and its own historical valuation:

Top 5 Undervalued Stocks To Watch For 2019: athenahealth, Inc.(ATHN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Athenahealth (ATHN) last night announced that its CFO and administrative chief, Kristi Matus, would be leaving the company. Her departure has not been embraced by investors, who have pushed shares lower today. Leerink’s David Larsen understands their concerns:

In our view, the CFO departure may be indicative of internal operational challenges. We still think it is possible that Kristi Matus is seeking an environment that is not as demanding as ATHN, though this has not been confirmed by management. Management harped on the point that bifurcation is part of the strategic initiative of ATHN to reenergize the culture of the company, and Jonathan Bush noted how he himself hopes to spend more time on talent and culture and less time on entering new markets and building new products.

We continue to believe that ATHN is facing challenges. We continue to believe the market is fundamentally slowing and bookings growth may become more lumpy as we progress through 2016. We still believe there will be a slow-down in the bookings growth rate b/c of a possible slow-down in the ambulatory EMR market and the fact that we are in the final payment year of Meaningful Use. Much of the call focused on Kristi Matus’s departure as a major loss for the company of a leader who was “masterful with investors.” According to management, the decision to split the CFO and CFAO responsibilities was not a reflection of her ability.

Baird’s Matthew Gillmor and Sean McBride are less worried:

The unexpected resignation of CFO Kristi Matus is disappointing, but the reasons for her departure seem somewhat understandable, in our view (potentially viewed bifurcation of CFO/CAO role as a demotion). We think incoming CFO Karl Stubelis is very strong and should provide helpful continuity, both internally and externally (currently serves as Controller and previously as acting CFO). Finally, the CFO change does not change our positive long-term thesi

Top 5 Undervalued Stocks To Watch For 2019: Visa Inc.(V)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

This one could be the easiest of advances, both because credit losses are down big and because its credit-card brethren — Capital One Financial, Discover, Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA) — have all had significant rallies. I actually regard this stock as inexpensive and think it can be bought here now that it has fully absorbed the loss of the Costco (COST) business to Visa and Citigroup (C) .

Visa Inc. (NYSE: V) stock has gained 2.61% so far in 2018, even after dropping slightly more than six points last week. Rising interest rates have provided a boost for most financial sector stocks, especially combined with low unemployment rates. Credit card debt topped $1 trillion for the first time ever last year. For the past 12 months, Visa shares have risen by nearly 32%.

Top 5 Undervalued Stocks To Watch For 2019: Ultra Petroleum Corp.(UPL)

Top 5 Undervalued Stocks To Watch For 2019: URS Corporation(URS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ian Wyatt, Publisher & Chief Investment Strategist, Wyatt Investment Research]

Fund manager John Mirshekari, of the Fidelity Low-Priced Stock Fund, recommended shares of URS (URS), an engineering and construction contractor.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Fidelty’s John Mirshekaritook a look at URS(URS) today at the Value Investing Congress. His takeaway: The stock could double in two years.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

His analysis started with URS’s use of its free cash. During the past, it hasn’t been pretty. They spent 6.3 billion on eight acquisitions, they’ve bought companies at valuations higher than own stock and return-on-equity has dropped from high teens to just 6%.

The problem hasn’t been its business: Its return on tangible capital is 17%. Instead, the problem is that its management hasn’t maximized value through capital allocation. URS has lowest valuation: 9x 2013 cash earnings in its industry.

Part of the problem: Management incentives are based on net income. This year, however, relative total shareholder return was added., something Mirshekari calls”a step in the right direction.” In May, URS filed an amended proxy which says it will look to change incentives from net income to return on equity and earnings per share. More importantly, it said acquisitions would end.

If all goes right, URS could double in two years,Mirshekari says, comparing it to AECOM Technology (ACM).

Looks a lot like AECOMM, which did something similar and rallied.

I was so terrified of losing even those few dollars that I thought I needed to make them as safe as possible. So instead of putting them into vehicles that might actually make me some money, I put my funds into a savings account not even a high-yield savings account and once I started to save slightly more, into the safest mutual fund I could find, an intermediate bond fund.

Top Trucking Companies To Buy Right Now

Okay, time for some secular economic and financial heresy, which is always somewhat fun. Secondary market liquidity isn’t very important to the functioning of the general economy of the capitalist world, including the US. (That said, my exceptions to this statement are listed here.)

Finance has an important role in the economy, aiding business in financing the assets of the corporation, and most of the value of that comes from the debt and/or equity financing in the primary markets, or from loan granted by a bank or another entity.

After the primary financing is done, the company has the cash to enter into its projects and produce value. Then the stocks, occasionallybonds, and rarely bank loans issued trade on the secondary markets if they trade at all. That trading is:

Advisors’ Opinion:

The large cap E&Ps we cover raised ~ $6.5 billion of equity in 2015 and are likely to consider additional issuance in 2016. Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) raised $1.3 billion on January 5th and Hess Corp. (HES) raised $1.5 billion of equity/equity-linked earlier this month. We think highly leveraged companies such as Devon Energy,Encana andRange Resources (RRC) and companies with a large deficit (before asset sales), such asAnadarko Petroleum and Devon Energy, are most likely to consider raising equity. Additionally, we believe companies such as WPX Energy (WPX), Southwestern Energy (SWN), Marathon Oil, Continental Resources (CLR),Noble Energy and Newfield Exploration (NFX) could issue equity while several levered companies may be unwilling or unable to access equity markets. We do not think Apache, Canadian Natural Resource, EOG Resources (EOG), Occidental Petroleum orPioneer Natural Resources are likely to issue equity this year.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Best Bank Companies To Own In Right Now

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) — Corporate insiders sell their own companies’ stock for a number of reasons.

Must Read: Warren Buffett’s Top 10 Dividend Stocks

They might need the cash for a big personal purchase such as a new house or yacht, or they might need the cash to fund a charity. Sometimes they sell as part of a planned selling program that they have put in place for diversification purposes, which allows them to sell stock in stages instead of selling all at one price.

Other times they sell because they think their stock is overvalued and the risk/reward is no longer attractive. Some even dump their own stock because they have inside knowledge that a competitor is eating their lunch and stealing market share.

But insiders usually buy their own shares for one reason: They think the stock is a bargain and has tremendous upside.

The key word in that last statement is “think.” Just because a corporate insider thinks his or her stock is going to trade higher, that doesn’t mean it will play out that way. Insiders can have all the conviction in the world that their stock is a buy, but if the market doesn’t agree with them, the stock could end up going nowhere. Also, I say “usually” because sometimes insiders are loaned money by the company to buy their own stock. Those loans are often sweetheart deals and shouldn’t be viewed as organic insider buying.

Low customer confidence due to an adverse economic environment has affected supermarket operators, and tighter market competition over pricing has further eroded margins. However, as the economy slowly recovers, grocery stores are presented with an opportunity to improve performance and deliver profits. Let us look at the Safeway (SWY) and Kroger (KR), two supermarket operators, in order to discern which one offers better investment prospects.

  • [By Matthew Smith]

In our article on September 16th (located here) we said we were still bullish the grocers and thought that Safeway (SWY) would continue to be a winner along with the industry. Apparently, we were not alone in that thinking as the company announced yesterday that they were putting in place a poison pill which will be good for one year in order to keep anyone from building a stake larger than 10% in the company. The move was prompted by Jana Partners taking a 6.2% stake in the company and the hope of management is that this one-year period will either cool the heels of Jana or allow the two parties to work together rather than going hostile. We personally dislike poison pills, but in this case, it should not be seen as a negative as we doubt anyone was considering assembling a stake at or above that 10% level. Investors cheered the news and sent shares higher by $2.75 (9.74%) to close at $30.99/share on extremely heavy volume of 29.8 million shares.

Safeway shares were up $1.65, or 6.21%, during Friday morning trading. The stock is up 56% YTD.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Another under-$10 biotechnology player that’s starting to trend within range of triggering a major breakout trade is CytRx (CYTR), which has an oncology pipeline that includes two programs in clinical development for cancer indications: aldoxorubicin and tamibarotene. This stock has been moving to the upside during the last three months, with shares up by 21%.

If you take a look at the chart for CytRx, you’ll notice that this stock has been trending sideways inside of a consolidation chart pattern for the last two months, with shares moving between $2.27 on the downside and $2.68 on the upside. That consolidation pattern has occurred right above this stock’s 50-day and 200-day moving averages. Shares of CYTR have now started to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $2.49 a share. That move is quickly pushing CYTR within range of triggering an even bigger breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in CYTR if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.68 to $2.80 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that registers near or above its three-month average action of 154,838 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then CYTR will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $3.20 to $4 a share.

Traders can look to buy CYTR off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 200-day at $2.33 a share or below more support at $2.27 a share. One can also buy CYTR off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Nu Skin Enterprises (NUS) is a direct selling company, which develops and distributes personal care products and nutritional supplements that are sold under the Nu Skin and Pharmanex brands. This stock closed up 5.4% at $92.96 in Monday’s trading session.

    Monday’s Volume: 2 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 900,802

    Volume % Change: 85%

From a technical perspective, NUS ripped higher here right above some near-term support at $85 with heavy upside volume. This move pushed shares of NUS into breakout and new 52-week-high territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $88.20 to $89.69. This move also pushed shares of NUS above the upper-end of its recent range that saw the stock trend between $82 to just above $89.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in NUS as long as it’s trending above support at $85 and then once it sustains a move or close above Monday’s high of $93.33 with volume that this near or above 900,802 shares. If we get that move soon, then NUS will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $100 to $105.
