Best Small Cap Stocks To Watch Right Now

Today, our Under the Radar Movers newsletter suggested shorting small cap optical solutions manufacturing stock LightPath Technologies (NASDAQ: LPTH) in our short term portfolio:

“Lightpath just squandered its best shot at a rebound on Friday, with a high-volume surge that petered out with a mere brush of the 20-day moving average line (blue)…. a resistance line that’s been a problem other times in the recent past. The sellers jumped on again, rekindling a downtrend that’s been firmly in place since late September.”

“It probably won’t be a red-hot downtrend, but slow and steady wins the race.”

Our Under the Radar Movers newsletter has a further discussion about LightPath Technologies’ technical chart along with a shorting strategy:

Most were low volatility funds or ETFs tracking low volatility sectors, such as consumer staples, telecom and utilities, but GSD also entered the all-time high club. Much of the focus of cannabis investors has been centered on Canada and California. This makes sense given that they are the two largest recreational (or soon to be) cannabis markets in the world. However, one publicly traded company with US-centric cannabis operations has taken a different approach. iAnthus Capital is listed in Canada on the CSE (OTCQB:ITHUF), but is headquartered in New York and incorporated in Delaware. Unlike other Canadian-listed cannabis companies, most of which are aiming to get in on the highly competitive green-rush in California and Canada, iAnthus has set its sights on becoming the dominant player on the U.S. East Coast.

What about Florida? If you want to stick with marijuana growers, one possibility is iAnthus Capital Holdings (NASDAQOTH:ITHUF). The company holds one of only 13 cannabis licenses in Florida and also has operations in three other states. Its stock ranked as the No. 2 best-performing marijuana stock in the first half of 2018.

It’s not even just a Canadian problem. iAnthus Capital Holdings (NASDAQOTH:ITHUF), a vertically integrated cannabis dispensary with a focus on the U.S. market, recently closed on its purchase of MPX Bioceutical. This roughly $600 million deal increases the number of states iAnthus has access to from six to 11, and lifts its retail license count to 63. But take a gander at its most recent quarterly filing and you’ll see that CA$7.2 million in goodwill has not so magically transformed into CA$75.9 million in goodwill over a nine-month period, through Sept. 30, 2018. This represents 55% of the company’s total assets.

Best Safest Stocks To Invest In 2019

Widows and orphans have had a tough few months.   Long-term U.S. Treasury bonds – often cited as the safest investment on the planet and suitable for the most cautious investors – lost more than seven years' worth of income in just the past four months.   Lending money to the U.S. government for 30 years in exchange for a 2% yield turned out not to be such a good idea. Yields are now 50% higher than they were back in July. And these Treasury bonds, or "T-bonds," have collapsed in price.   But that has given us a fantastic risk/reward setup today…   Let's start by looking at this chart of the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond Fund (TLT)…

Best Safest Stocks To Invest In 2019: Plains All American Pipeline L.P.(PAA)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The growth opportunities could be significant. Large-scale midstream companies Targa Resources (NYSE:TRGP) and Plains All American Pipelines (NYSE:PAA) currently have billions of dollars of Permian growth projects under way that will significantly increase their cash flow in the coming years. Targa Resources recently secured contracts supporting $500 million of gas gathering and processing investments in the region, which boosted its total backlog of Permian projects to $2.4 billion, or 75% of its total planned spending over the next two years. Those expansions position it to nearly double its earnings by 2021. Plains All American Pipelines, meanwhile, is investing more than 80% of its roughly $2 billion capital budget on the Permian over the next two years, and it could end up spending even more money to meet the demand for oil gathering capacity. Those expansions help position it to grow cash flow at a double-digit annual pace over the next two years. Given Oasis Midstream’s much smaller size, it has the potential to capture needle-moving growth by expanding into the Permian.

  • [By Tyler Crowe, Matthew DiLallo, and Reuben Gregg Brewer]

Fortunately for those looking at these attractive valuations, oil’s end-of-days scenario is likely a ways down the road. So we asked three Fool.com contributors to highlight a stock they see in the oil industry right now that looks attractive. Here’s why they picked Plains All American Pipeline (NYSE:PAA), Marathon Petroleum (NYSE:MPC), and Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP).

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

It’s also just one of several oil pipeline projects in the works throughout the Permian Basin. Plains All American Pipeline (NYSE:PAA) is currently investing $1.6 billion on Permian Basin expansions, which include two long-haul pipelines and several other complementary projects to help de-bottleneck the flow of crude. Those projects help position Plains to grow earnings and cash flow at a double-digit annual pace over the next two years, setting it up to increase its 4.9%-yielding payout at a healthy rate going forward.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Two years ago, Plains All American Pipeline (NYSE:PAA) and Plains GP Holdings (NYSE:PAGP) took a step to simplify their corporate structure by eliminating the costly incentive distribution rights (IDRs) that Plains All American paid to Plains GP. In exchange, Plains GP acquired a 34.8% stake in the MLP. While that deal was certainly a step in the right direction, the companies could eventually take the next logical progression by combining into one entity.

Want proof? We asked a team of our Motley Fool investors to each highlight a little-known income stock that they are quite fond of. Here’s why they called outMedical Properties Trust (NYSE:MPW),Plains All American Pipeline (NYSE:PAA), and LaMaitre Vascular (NASDAQ:LMAT).

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

There’s just one problem with all that production: It needs to get out of the basin, which is a problem right now sincethere aren’t enough pipelines. Because of that, some of the best ways to play the Permian production boom are pipeline companies. Three perfectly positioned to profit from the Permian boom arePlains All American Pipeline(NYSE:PAA),Targa Resources(NYSE:TRGP), andKinder Morgan(NYSE:KMI).

Hot Blue Chip Stocks To Own Right Now

What a silly stock market. There I was on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. waiting for the Dow Jones Industrial Average to crash 1,700 points as Trump verbally ripped Iran to shreds (and pulled out of the Iran deal). The Dow instantly tanked 80 points one sentence into Trump’s latest global spectacle. But then the Blue Chip index rallied back as Trump continued to hit Iran, and actually finished the session higher. As a 15-year old would put it: #WTF.

For an already jittery market to be able to shrug off major news of this kind is nicely short-term bullish…or is it.

“Couple of thoughts. First, there’s genuine confusion right now about the value of strength. We like strength in employment because there’s no real wage inflation. We like strength in commodities because it means the world’s not slowing down. And we like strength in consumer spending like we heard last night in Disney (DIS) and we have been hearing for weeks now in earnings season,” writes TheStreet’s founder Jim Cramer over on RealMoney on the weird move in the markets Tuesday. In effect, we could be in a short-term good news is good news environment for stocks. That’s an environment where you load back up on cyclicals and hot tech names like Netflix (NFLX) (which could be acquired by Action Alerts PLUS holding Microsoft (MSFT) in within two years, reports TheStreet’s Katherine Ross).

Best Cheap Stocks To Watch For 2019

Introduction

BP, (BP) gets a lot of interest from investors, and has a lot of articles written about it. Many of these articles feature the generous dividend the company pays, upon which many retirees rely for income. Other articles feature the depressed stock price relative to its cohort group, and talk about how as oil prices ratchet up, the holders of BP equities should prosper. All of this is true, and I have written some of each of each type of article. But, they get a teensy bit dull…can’t they?

BP stock was cheap a year and a half ago in comparison to other Super Major oil companies, like Shell, (RDS.A, RDS.B), Chevron, (CVX), and others. Looking at the share price alone that is. If you got into the financials (as you should when making an investment decision), BP had no EPS, its multiple was in the stratosphere, it was borrowing to cover that nice dividend…it just went on and on, one negative after another.

It was cheap for a reason to be sure. There were actually a lot of reasons, that are well known to all, but if you knew the company, as I did, you knew there was value in the BP organization. One of my earliest articles for SA was to extol BP’s seemingly daring approval of Mad Dog Phase II in the GoM. I was out there, pretty much all alone, at the time, saying, that not only was this the right thing for a company like BP to be doing, but it was in fact absolutely essential they make these type of decisions.

Top 10 Safest Stocks To Own For 2018

Shutterstock

There’s no way around it: the S&P 500 now has a P/E ratio of more than 26 going into the first earnings season of 2017, and even the “safest” bets are starting to look scary.

Unless we see massive profit growth all around, there’s a real risk this bull market is going to stutter—or worse.

So where do you go for value? It’s getting harder than ever, but there is one corner of the market that got way ahead of the S&P 500 and has since taken a step back. I’m talking about real estate investment trusts (REITs).

And now, there are three REITs that combined provide over 9% in income with over 200% average dividend coverage. That means they could double their payouts and still generate enough cash to cover them.

Plus, these stocks are out of favor, making them relatively cheap compared to their peers and the overheated broader market.

Top 10 Safest Stocks To Own For 2018: Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK-B)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew Frankel]

Warren Buffett and the rest of Berkshire Hathaway’s (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B) management have had a lingering problem for some time: Cash continues to build up on the balance sheet and there hasn’t been any attractive way to put it to work. At the end of 2017, Berkshire had more than $116 billion in cash and equivalents — far more than the $20 billion or so Buffett likes to keep on hand.

  • [By Jordan Wathen]

Warren Buffett has often said in interviews and annual letters to shareholders that Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A)(NYSE:BRK-B) won’t be a hostile acquirer. That is, it won’t fight to buy a business its owners or management don’t want to sell. But that policy apparently doesn’t apply when Berkshire is acting as seller rather than a buyer.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Warren Buffett is one of the most successful investors of all time, and one of the reasons why his high-performing Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B) has done as well as it has is because of Buffett’s mind-set. Berkshire’s CEO seeks out businesses that already embrace the principles that he values, and corporate leaders at many of the companies that he has acquired over the years choose to become part of Berkshire Hathaway because they know that the Oracle of Omaha’s interests will be aligned with their own.

Best Undervalued Stocks To Watch Right Now

If youre looking for an undervalued company in the auto segment thats almost guaranteed to grow slow and steady over the long term, then the Lear Corporation (LEA) should definitely be on your vetting list. The lowly PE ratio of 10 is merely the bitter aftertaste of investors in a company that went belly up during the great recession because of its debt pile. I believe the company has shaken off its old habits and is fiscally more responsible now. Moreover, it holds a large market share of the seat segment and a growing one in e-systems, the second of which addresses a growing auto electrification market. So lets look at how you, as an investor, can take advantage of the troubles this company has gone through and, more importantly, come out of.

The auto industry is on the verge of the greatest disruption of our times as automaker after automaker pursues technologies like autonomous vehicle technology, electrification and connectivity. Sure, you can take the driver out of the car, but you cant take away the seats! And thats where the Lear Corporation makes its plush entrance. With 2017 seat assembly sales of $15.9 billion representing nearly a fourth of the addressable market, Lear looms large in a relatively stable and growing niche of a highly disruptive segment.

Best Undervalued Stocks To Watch Right Now: Xcel Energy Inc.(XEL)

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

The rise of wind power wouldn’t have been possible without two companies in particular, which combine to own 20.7 gigawatts of wind capacity, or about 24% of the country’s total. Investors wouldn’t be surprised to learn that clean energy provider NextEra Energy is one of the renewable energy stocks most important to American wind power. However, the relatively unheard of natural gas and electric utility Xcel Energy (NASDAQ:XEL) doesn’t seem to garner nearly the same level of attention. Overlooking it could be a mistake.

As some background, we are intimately familiar with Aeroplan and Air Canada (OTCQX:ACDVF) not just as investors but as extraordinarily heavy consumers. As both an Air Canada top tier elite and Aeroplan top tier member I generate well in excess of 1.5 million Aeroplan miles annually, half from flying Air Canada and its partners and the other half from spending. As consumers we were concerned with Air Canada’s decision (though we expect more details to come out that will alleviate these concerns) but as investors we understand that the fundamental business model of mileage programs are incredibly attractive and that Aimia presents an incredibly rare and lucrative investment opportunity for the investor discerning enough to dig into the company.

Top 10 Medical Stocks To Watch Right Now

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has been one of the more impressive stocks of the past 25 years. In fact, AMZN now has returned nearly 100,000% from its IPO price of $18 ($1.50 adjusted for the company’s subsequent stock splits).

A large part of the returns have come from two factors. First, Amazon has vastly expanded its reach. What originally was just an online bookseller now has its hands in everything from cloud computing to online media to groceries. And its shadow is even larger. A potential entry by Amazon has rattled pharmacy stocks and medical distributors, among others.

Secondly, as a stock, AMZN has managed the feat of keeping a growth stock valuation for over two decades. I’ve long argued that investors can’t focus solely on the company’s high P/E ratio to value Amazon stock. But however wise an investor might the current multiple is, the market has assigned a substantial premium to AMZN stock for over 20 years now.

It’s an impressive combination — and one that’s likely impossible, or close, to duplicate. But these five stocks have the potential to at least replicate parts of the Amazon formula. All five have years, if not decades, of growth ahead. New market opportunities abound. And while I’m not predicting that any will rise 100,000% — or 1,000% — these five stocks do have the potential for impressive long-term gains.

Can you blame the market for placing its chips on the streaming content giant? Look at the easy base case on why an investor should like the stock:

No talk of government regulation as is the case with other FAANG names Facebook (FB) and Action Alerts PLUS holding Amazon (AMZN) .  A permanent expectation that a company such as Apple (AAPL)  or Disney (DIS) will eventually acquire Netflix.  Growth hasn’t sharply slowed as are the situations at Apple and Alphabet (GOOGL) .  While Netflix has its competitors (Hulu, Amazon etc.), there is no one stepping up to compete with the company’s owned content efforts.  People continue to cut-the-cord, playing right into the Netflix business model.

To be sure, there are likely hundreds of other reasons for the relative out-performance of the stock. For instance, Goldman Sachs (GS) analyst Heath Terry thinks Netflix’s financial results stand to get even stronger amid stepped up market efforts.

Earnings per share of $3.27 beat a $1.24 consensus, while revenue of $51.04 billion beat a $49.92 billion consensus. Shares of Amazon spiked more than 7% after hours to around $1,609. Amazon’s market cap now stands at approximately $780 billion, about 9% shy of Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) $833 billion market cap.
