The Top Stock Market Stories for Tuesday
Two big stories will headline a busy Tuesday. The first is across the Atlantic Ocean, where the British Parliament will wrangle over Prime Minister Theresa May’s last-minute deal with Europe on a soft “Brexit.” Late Monday, May won legally binding support from the EU ahead of Tuesday’s vote. The Prime Minister secured three documents – a joint statement, a joint instrument, and a unilateral declaration – all aimed at addressing one of the biggest challenges to the split between Britain and the EU: the border between Northern Ireland – a British province – and Ireland. Boeing stock continues to slide – falling another 3.2% — after a downgrade from Raymond James Financial Inc. (NYSE: RJF). The company is reeling after a second Boeing 737 MAX 8 plane in five months crashed. Although the Federal Aviation Commission has said that the planes are airworthy, the U.S. agency expects it will order design changes to the planes’ systems and signaling. With that in mind, Raymond James anticipates that the latest crash will lead to delays in orders. Also, Australia has joined China and Ethiopia on a list to suspend the jet from service until the crash in Ethiopia has been investigated. Here in the United States, California Senator Dianne Feinstein called on the U.S. government to suspend all 737 Max 8 flights.
Despite a fall in Boeing stock, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) shares popped 3.47% and Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) rose 1.46% after both received positive new ratings from analysts. Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ: NVDA) also went to bat with a 6.97% surge after announcing its purchase of Mellanox Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: MLNX) for $6.8 billion. Mellanox stock rose 7.78% at the same time. Some benchmarks rose as much as 2%, but certain individual stocks saw even larger gains. NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA), XPO Logistics (NYSE:XPO), and Infinera (NASDAQ:INFN) were among the top performers. Here’s why they did so well.

The fourth quarter of 2018 was the worst fourth quarter in more than a decade for the graphics card market, according to Jon Peddie Research. Overall board shipments plunged more than 40% year over year as both Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) and rival NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) dealt with the aftermath of the bursting of the cryptocurrency bubble. Sluggish demand and excess inventory have caused big problems for both companies.

Zogenix’s lead compound led to a 72.4% reduction in convulsive seizure frequency over a 14-week period, compared to the 17.4% reduction for placebo patients.

Top China Stocks To Invest In 2018: USG Corporation(USG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Warren Buffett likes to hold his stock positions for the long run, and his experience with USG (NYSE:USG) has been typical of his other long-term investments. The Oracle of Omaha started buying shares of the manufacturer of Sheetrock drywall and other building materials back in 2000, accumulating a sizable stake that has ballooned to more than 30% of the company. USG ended up going through bankruptcy in order to get a handle on its asbestos liability claims, but thanks largely to Buffett’s involvement, the building materials company not only survived bankruptcy but also saw share prices soar briefly on hopes that USG would once again fully participate in the then-strong housing boom.

Amgen’s Novel Migraine Treatment Gets Key Approval

Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ: AMGN) shares saw a nice bump after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday approved Aimovig (erenumab), Amgen’s preventive treatment of migraine in adults. It is the first FDA-approved preventive migraine treatment in a new class of drugs, which work by blocking the activity of calcitonin gene-related peptide, which is believed to play a critical role in migraine attacks.

Aimovig’s effectiveness in preventing migraines was evaluated in three clinical trials. The first two studies compared Aimovig to placebo in participants with a history of episodic migraine. Patients receiving Aimovig on average experienced one or two fewer monthly migraine days than those on placebo. The third study evaluated patients with a history of chronic migraine. Patients in that study treated with Aimovig averaged two and a half fewer monthly migraine days in three months than those receiving placebo.

The most common side effects that patients in the clinical trials reported were constipation and injection site reactions.

Preventive medications may be an option for around 8 million Americans suffering from migraine, Amgen said. Aimovig, which is given monthly by self-injection, will have a list price of $6,900 a year, or $575 a month, the company also said. Last week, President Donald Trump blasted drugmakers and health care middlemen for making prescription medicines unaffordable for Americans. Amgen, which will market Aimovig in partnership with Novartis A.G. (NYSE: NVS), said the drug’s price “reflects the value it brings to patients and society.”

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (NYSE: TEVA) and Eli Lilly & Co. (NYSE: LLY) are among companies developing similar treatments.

Stewart J. Tepper, MD, Professor of Neurology at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School, said:

Having a treatment designed to specifically address the complex nature of migraine is an important and welcome step forward in headache medicine. Aimovig offers self-administration with proven efficacy across a spectrum of patients, including in those who have previously tried other preventive therapies without success.

Shares of Amgen were up almost 2% at $177.56 in Fridays premarket, with a consensus analyst price target of $194.33 and a 52-week trading range of $152.16 to $201.23.

Novartis and Teva shares were up marginally in early indications as well.

As for weaker generic-drug pricing, this isn’t anything new. Generic drugmakers like Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (NYSE:TEVA) have been pressured by weaker generic drug prices since the third quarter of last year. However, weakness in pricing has recently shown signs of stabilizing. Generic drug manufacturers and Wall Street analysts both seem to believe that 2019 will offer much-needed price stabilization for generic therapies. Considering that generics make up the bulk of total written prescription — about nine out of 10 — it seems only logical that pricing power will return to generic drugmakers and distributors sooner rather than later.

Much of the attention on Wall Street centered on other financial markets, which included favorable price action in oil, a surge in the value of the U.S. dollar against many foreign currencies, and relatively weak performance from gold. Yet there was still plenty of good news that sent individual companies’ shares higher. Momenta Pharmaceuticals Contemplates Its Future

After a delay in launching Glatopa 40 mg resulted in competition, Momenta Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:MNTA) has decided to conduct a strategic review to determine where it should put its limited cash resources — presumably partnering or selling the remaining less-important assets — making for a rather abstract first-quarterearnings update.

What happened with Momenta Pharmaceuticals this quarter?
Revenue decreased year over year due to lower sales of Glatopa 20 mg, the daily version ofTeva Pharmaceutical’s(NYSE:TEVA)multiple sclerosis drug Copaxone, after Mylan (NASDAQ:MYL) got its version of the drug approved. There was also a $9.8 million deduction from the 50% partnership with Novartis (NYSE:NVS) for inventory reserves for Glatopa 40 mg, the three-times-a-week version. Despite the competition, Novartis still has 40% of the 20 mg market, but the competition has resulted in lower prices. Momenta and Mylan, which in addition to being competitors for Copaxone generics are also partners for their biosimilar program, continue their investigation into why M834, a copycat ofBristol-Myers Squibb’s Orencia, failed a phase 1 trial in November. After discussing plans with the FDA, Momenta said it’s going to run proof-of-concept studies testing M281, which lowers immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels, in two different diseases. One trial will be in a disease for which lowering IgG levels has already been shown to help patients, such as myasthenia gravis, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, or pemphigus. And for the second trial, the plan is to test M281 in a disease for which there is no currently approved treatment, potentially allowing a quicker route to approval, albeit with potentially more risk.

What management had to say

Craig Wheeler, Momenta’s president and CEO,explained why the biotech plans to test M281 in a disease for which the drug’s mechanism of action has already been determined to be beneficial: “Our goal is to demonstrate the potential of our molecule in an area where the target has been validated and hopefully demonstrate that our higher potency and strong safety profile translates into best-in-class efficacy.”

Wheeler also highlighted a preclinical drug, M254, with high potential that will enter phase 1 trial in the second half of the year:

In animal models, we can reproduciblydemonstrate up to 10 times the potency of IVIG [intravenous immunoglobulin]. If we can do this in humans, it will be a game-changer for the IVIG marketplace, which today is a global supply constrained market with over $4 billion in sales in autoimmune indications. IVIG in autoimmune indications is a very difficult therapy for patients, often requiring infusions over one or more days with challenging side effects. A drug with a fraction of the volume and infusion time and with the potential to dose higher for better efficacy could create meaningful value for patients and our investors.

Looking forward

Momenta plans to complete its strategic review by the end of this quarter, so investors won’t have to wait too long to see what’s on the chopping block. Once the biotech extends its cash runway, it’ll just be a waiting game as the company’s pipeline of biosimilars and proprietary drugs make it through the clinic, and hopefully on to the market in a few years.

Top 5 Small Cap Stocks To Own For 2018

One of the smaller details of Trumpcare, the redacted version of Obamacare, is the elimination of a tax imposed on manufacturers of medical devices. While the fate of pre-existing conditions has been hogging the spotlight in recent days, this particular tax and its future could have an impact on companies like Ventripoint Diagnostics (OTCMKTS: VPTDF TSE:VPT), and other small cap biotech companies in the device sector.

Embedded in Obamacare is a medical device tax of 2.3%. It was first imposed in January 2013 as a funding mechanism for the Affordable Care Act, a law that has brought medical coverage to millions of previously uninsured Americans. But despite the partisan nature of ACA, this particular tax has powerful enemies in both parties. The tax was so controversial it was temporarily suspended in 2015, but those in the medical device industry were wary that it would go away forever.

Nonprofit organization Oxfam presented a state of the world’s wealth analysis before Davos, a gathering of the world’s richest and most powerful people. Among the conclusions of the study is that the world adds a new billionaire every other day.

Another major conclusion of the study is that 1% of the world’s population controls 82% of the world’s wealth:

Eighty two percent of the wealth generated last year went to the richest one percent of the global population, while the 3.7 billion people who make up the poorest half of the world saw no increase in their wealth, according to a new Oxfam report released today. The report is being released as political and business elites, including President Trump, are heading to Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum.

Oxfams report, Reward Work, Not Wealth, reveals how the global economy enables the wealthy elite to capture vast wealth while hundreds of millions of people struggle to survive on poverty pay. This includes the stunning new finding that the economy created a new billionaire every other day over a period of one year.

Investment thesis

Even though recent weeks have been relatively volatile for Vestas Wind Systems (OTCPK:VWDRY) as U.S. President Donald Trump decided to withdraw from the Paris climate accord, long-term prospects of the world’s biggest wind turbine maker still look very optimistic. With several fundamental drivers and untapped opportunities in two future renewable powerhouses – China and India – Vestas seem to be an undervalued gem that can surprise many investors.

Strengthening leadership position

According to data compiled by Bloomberg New Energy Finance and MAKE Consulting, Vestas solidified its leadership position in 2016 and currently accounts for more than 16 percent of all onshore installations. Besides that, the company is also active in the offshore market through its 50-50 joint venture with MHI, which recently unveiled an upgrade of the biggest offshore wind turbine.

Why Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, Gramercy Property Trust, and Medtronic Jumped Today

The stock market posted small advances on Monday, with most major benchmarks picking up between 0.4% and 0.8%. Much of the attention on Wall Street centered on other financial markets, which included favorable price action in oil, a surge in the value of the U.S. dollar against many foreign currencies, and relatively weak performance from gold. Yet there was still plenty of good news that sent individual companies’ shares higher. Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (NYSE:TEVA), Gramercy Property Trust (NYSE:GPT), and Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

Teva looks healthier

Shares of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries rose 4% after the company reported first-quarter financial results. The drugmaker suffered a 10% drop in revenue due largely to poor conditions in the U.S. generic drug market, and adjusted earnings per share also dropped double-digit percentages from year-ago levels. Yet CEO Kare Schultz said that the company is on track with its restructuring plan, which it believes will cut $1.5 billion in costs this year and $3 billion by the end of 2019. Moreover, Teva boosted its full-year 2018 earnings guidance by $0.15 per share and its free cash flow projections by $400 million, to new ranges of $2.40 to $2.65 per share in earnings and $3 billion to $3.2 billion in free cash flow. Despite ongoing challenges, investors have high hopes that this marks the beginning of a more meaningful turnaround for Teva.

Gramercy gets an offer

Gramercy Property Trust stock soared 15.5% in the wake of the real estate investment trust (REIT) getting a buyout bid from a would-be acquirer. A fund run by institutional investment giant Blackstone Group (NYSE:BX) announced that it would pay $27.50 per share in cash for Gramercy, putting the total value of the company at $7.6 billion. Coming on the heels of another deal in the sector, those following REITs are pleased to see buying interest even in the face of rising interest rates, which would ordinarily depress valuations. If all goes well, Blackstone hopes to close on the Gramercy deal sometime during the second half of the year.

Medtronic makes a hire

Finally, shares of Medtronic gained nearly 5%. The medical device maker said that it had hired JPMorgan equity research managing director Mike Weinstein as a senior vice president for strategy. Medtronic believes that it will benefit from Weinstein’s expertise in business development, capital deployment, and creation of shareholder value. The former analyst agreed, saying, “Having covered Medtronic for more than two decades now, I have full confidence in the outlook and the strategy, and our ability to unlock that value in the months and years ahead.” The move also has investors excited that Medtronic might look for shareholder-friendlier ways to get the stock moving higher after staying in a holding pattern over the past couple of years.

Alliance Data Systems (ADS) was the worst performer in the S&P 500 Tuesday.

Getty Images

ADS shares fell $9.32, or 3.8%, to $238.32, compared to the S&P 500, which fell 3.38 points, or 0.14%, to 2353.78.

The shares were hurt by a bearish note from Oppenheimer: Analysts Ben Chittenden and Dominick Gabriele initiated coverage of the stock with an Underperform rating and a $185 price target.

Details from the note:

Long investors seem generally to believe that the profitability of ADS’s capital-light/data-driven/tech-based businesses (Epsilon/LoyaltyOne) will turn relatively soon and that EPS will be driven by more than just the card business. The logical conclusion is the multiple should be FinTech-based. We think it’s just as easy to make the case that, while ADS had a first-mover advantage on data-driven, SKU-level analytics, competitive advantage is diminishing and the profitability of these businesses will likely take longer to turn (and likely not return to historical levels). Thus, earnings will continue to be driven by the balance sheet-intensive card business (our ’18E EPS is 6% below consensus) and should be valued as such, we think.

Best Value Stocks To Own For 2018: Manitowoc Company, Inc. (MTW)

Heavy machinery makers such as Manitowoc (NYSE: MTW) and Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) are also nervous. And Boeing (NYSE: BA), too, could see a negative impact, not just from higher costs to assemble a 737, but from potential retaliation should foreign customers start placing more orders with European rival Airbus.

With a neutral sector rating, we are working on evaluating risks to negative calls, and identifying potential value opportunities. Last week we noted more work might be worthwhile on Wabco Holdings (WBC), Terex, Manitowoc (MTW), and Caterpillar, two of those names have rallied for other reasons but the attractive price made the upside/downside skew up. We remain positive (OW) on Allison Transmission Holdings (ALSN) & United Rentals. Our and consensus 2017Allison Transmission Holdings estimates have fallen by 2% vs. ~15% for the group, while the shares are down 10% since launch. We continue to see United Rentals as the best value in our group…

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (TEVA) slashed its earnings guidance today and told investors that in 2017, it would be “focused on execution.” Of course, I’ve never heard a company tell investors that, hey, we’re not really going to focus on executing this year, but what do I know? I’m just a blogger. Maxim’s Gabrielle Zhou and team try to explain what Teva means:

Teva provided an updated business outlook for 2017. The company expects to continue its execution on the integration of the Actavis transaction. However, Teva reduced full year 2017 guidance…Net revenues are now estimated in a range of $23.8B-$24.5B, non-GAAP EPS is $4.90-$5.30 (based on weighted average shares of 1,076M). Recall that Teva provided a 2016-2019 preliminary financial outlook in July 2016 that included projected 2017 revenues of $25.2B-$26.2B and non-GAAP EPS of $6.00-$6.50; reduced guidance reflects delays in the timing of generic launches (some by a year), price erosion and external competition.

Conclusion: we downgrade the stock to Hold from Buy. Teva is working to realize synergies from the Actavis business integration, launch new products in 2017, and generate free cash flow to the company, but challenges in the near term to the core generic and specialty business are becoming bigger issues. We will have to wait and see the company refocus on developing its organic growth. As such, we are downgrading the stock to Hold from Buy and lowering the price target to $41 from $49

Shares of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries dropped 7.5% to $35.11 at 3:18 p.m. today.
