As we approach the end of the first half of 2018, the Nasdaq Composite and Russell 2000 have become the upside leaders. The Nasdaq and small-cap averages are leading the stock market melt-up, setting new highs of 7,691.65 and 1,676.18, respectively, on June 6.
Next up will be the S&a;amp;P 500, which is 3.5% below its Jan. 26 all-time high of 2,872.87. It closed June 6 between my annual and quarterly pivots of 2,769.1 and 2,777.3, respectively.
The laggards are the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Dow Transportation Average, which set their all-time intraday highs of 26,616.71 on Jan. 26 and 11,423.92 on Jan. 16, respectively.
&l;strong&g;So, what&a;rsquo;s going on?&l;/strong&g;
&l;p class=&q;tweet_line&q;&g;The Russell 2000 is touted as an asset class immune from the tariff uncertainties. Momentum stocks such as Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Netflix set new all-time highs over the last two days becoming the &q;flight to safety.&q; Investors are ignoring the dividend stocks of the utility average, which is now deep into correction territory.

President Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminum comes at a particularly delicate time for major U.S. defense contractors Boeing (NYSE:BA), Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT), and Raytheon (NYSE:RTN), with each company vying for at least one of several multibillion-dollar procurement deals in Germany.

A version of Lockheed Martin’s (NYSE:LMT) high-tech Aegis weapon system upgraded for ballistic missile defense (BMD) provided the computing power and radars used in the test, while a Raytheon-built (NYSE:RTN) SM-3 interceptor was fired at the target.

Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has actually been on a prolonged uptrend going back five years, but the stock struggled for the first three months of 2018 to get over the $220 level. That resistance has since broken however, and RTN has continued to reach new all-time highs. This is another one that is looking poised to continue higher through its earnings report on April 26. Raytheon has exceeded Wall Street's EPS estimates every quarter since July 2016.

Top Dividend Stocks To Invest In 2019: ConocoPhillips(COP)
Advisors’ Opinion:

ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) worked hard to turn its business around during the oil market downturn. We saw the first glimpse of its ability to thrive, now that prices are on the upswing, at the end of last year when the U.S. oil giant reported $545 million, or $0.45 per share, of adjusted earnings. That result marked a significant improvement from the loss it had posted in the previous year.

And yet, a funny thing has been happening in the market for oil stocks over this past week. All of a sudden, Wall Street analysts are talking up free cash flow as a reason to buy oil stocks. In fact, they can’t seem to shut up about it. Over just the past few days, I’ve seen free cash flow mentioned prominently in the analyses of Wall Street bankers on no fewer than three separate oil stocks: ExxonMobil, Chevron (NYSE:CVX), and ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP).
