Hot High Tech Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Ask investors from Silicon Valley to Wall Street what’s had the biggest recent impact on tech startup exits and most will answer: Masayoshi Son’s almost $100 billion Vision Fund.

Now Son, the the founder and chief executive officer of SoftBank Group Corp., has a version 2.0 in the works, according to people familiar with the matter. It’s likely to be similar in size to the first — already the world’s biggest tech fund — and it could be coming as soon as next year, the people said, asking not to be identified as the matter is private.

Another mega fund rooting for deals among private tech companies would give founders cash to grow their businesses, and early investors a potential opportunity to sell and get liquidity. But it also could help further inflate already-pumped private valuations, crowding out other investors and delaying the inevitable sale or initial public offering — and the scrutiny of public markets.

“There’s already too much money chasing too few private companies,” said Kathleen Smith, principal at Renaissance Capital, which manages IPO-focused exchange-traded funds. “When there’s too much money, the returns get eroded. That’s what we have here.”

Since oil prices peaked in 2014, both Total and Shell have managed to generate positive total returns for investors who held through the downturn, in large part because of their diverse operations. Neither has come close to outperforming the S&P 500, but it could have been far worse; one only has to look at some of the biggest independent oil producers, including Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) (down 53%), Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:APC) (down 33%), and Continental Resources, Inc. (NYSE:CLR) (down 12.3%) to appreciate the benefit of Total’s and Shell’s more diversified operations.

Oil prices are at levels we haven’t seen in years. U.S. crude topped $70 for the first since 2014, as U.S. President Donald Trump appeared increasingly likely to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal and reinforce sanctions on Tehran. In addition, OPEC has announced plans to bolster prices and cap production. For oil investors, Money Morning Global Energy Strategist Dr. Kent Moors says it’s time to buckle up. According to Moors, revoking the Iran deal would cause “price chaos” around the globe. And that’s right as driving season starts in the United States. Here’s more on the coming chaos for oil. In deal news, Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX) announced it will purchase Gramercy Property Trust (NYSE: GPT) for $7.6 billion in cash. Grammercy manages commercial real estate. While this may seem like a boring deal, Blackstone is buying a business that churns out cold hard cash for its investors. We want to keep this deal on your radar, because there are many other deals like this coming down the pipeline. Hot High Tech Stocks To Invest In Right Now: AmeriGas Partners, L.P.(APU)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

Investors seeking income from energy stocks will find it difficult to match the impressive yields of Ferrellgas Partners LP (NYSE:FGP) and AmeriGas Partners (NYSE:APU), which sit at 11.9% and 9%, respectively. However, this is a textbook case of higher yields representing higher levels of risk.

Hot High Tech Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Phillips 66 Partners LP(PSXP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

While those customer commitments were hard to come by over the past few years due to the turbulence in the oil market, energy companies are beginning to grow more optimistic about the future. Because of that, Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE:PSXP) and several other partners were able to secure the necessary commitments to move forward with the Gray Oak Pipeline, which will transport oil out of the fast-growing Permian Basin. That project will enable these companies to generate more income, likely allowing them to boost their already above-average payouts.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

There was a similar trend for smaller midstream player Phillips 66 Partners LP (NYSE:PSXP). It was down 19% in 2018 and rose 16% in January. But the trend didn’t hold for Sunoco LP (NYSE:SUN), which distributes gasoline. This limited partnership was off by 4% in 2018, two percentage points less than the broader market, and up 12% in January. Cheniere Energy Partners LP (NYSEMKT:CQP) and Cheniere Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:LNG) were even further from the pack, up 12% and 11%, respectively, in January after posting gains of 21% and roughly 10%, respectively, in 2018.

  • [By John Bromels]

Phillips 66 was the midstream (transportation and storage) and downstream (refining and marketing) arms of oil and gas giant ConocoPhillips, which spun the company off in 2012. The company’s midstream operations include income from its master limited partnerships Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE:PSXP) and DCP Midstream (NYSE:DCP), which it co-owns with Enbridge.

Currently, three major oil pipelines are on pace to start service in late 2019. They include Plains All American Pipeline’s (NYSE:PAA) 670,000-BPD Cactus II, the up-to-1-million-BPD Grey Oak Pipeline by Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE:PSXP) and Andeavor (NYSE:ANDV), and the private equity–backed EPIC pipeline that could move up to 675,000 BPD. Add it up, and that’s more than 2 million BPD of pipeline capacity. Meanwhile, Energy Transfer and Magellan Midstream are expanding several existing lines, which could add another 400,000 BPD next year. On top of that, Plains All American Pipeline is working with oil giant ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) on a 1 million-BPD oil pipeline as well as expanding several other smaller pipelines as fast as it can.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

Investing in midstream master limited partnerships is generally all about the distributions, which the tax-efficient corporate structure is designed to provide to unitholders. However, that doesn’t always mean a high distribution yield is the goal, which is the key to determining if Holly Energy Partners, LP (NYSE:HEP) or Phillips 66 Partners LP (NYSE:PSXP) is the better buy. Here’s what you need to know to make an informed decision between these stocks.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Buy Right Now: Ballard Power Systems, Inc.(BLDP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

That much becomes clear after taking a look at fuel cell stocks Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) and Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP). The companies generated just $235 million in revenue combined last year. While that would seem to indicate that the technology has a ways to go, a closer look shows both companies are on an upward trajectory as they position to exploit decarbonization trends. It also reveals two different growth strategies.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The stock market came out of Labor Day weekend on a sluggish note, but it recovered ground by the end of the session to finish close to where it had started. Lingering doubts about the status of trade discussions with key trading partners initially caused major benchmarks to fall around half a percent in the morning. Once again, though, stocks proved their resiliency, and investors seemed more comfortable with the idea that corporate earnings would remain strong at least through the end of the year. Moreover, some strong showings from key stocks helped lift sentiment. Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD), Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP), and El Pollo Loco Holdings (NASDAQ:LOCO) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

That may not be surprising to investors considering the massive Chinese market has lifted diverse sectors and industries in the last two decades, but China may prove critical to the success of struggling fuel cell stocks. Can Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP) and Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) capitalize on the opportunity in the East?

However, the big capacity boost will come toward the end of next year, when as many as three large-scale pipelines could enter service. Plains All American Pipeline’s Cactus II should begin partial service by the third quarter of next year before starting full service of 670,000 BPD by April of 2020. Meanwhile, Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE:PSXP) and Andeavor (NYSE:ANDV) are building the Grey Oak Pipeline, which could move as much as 800,000 BPD to the Gulf Coast. Phillips 66 Partners and Andeavor plan to spend $2 billion to build the pipeline, which should start up by the end of 2019. That line would not only bring oil to refineries in the region but also to a new export dock under construction by Phillips 66 Partners, Andeavor, and another partner. Finally, the private equity–backed EPIC crude pipeline is also expected to start construction by the end of this year, which would put it in service by the second half of 2019.

The Sweeny Hub expansion is a “key part of our midstream growth strategy,” said Garland, as it “further optimizes our integrated NGL value chain.” That chain starts with a link to fast-growing production basins to the West via pipelines co-owned by DCP Midstream and the company’s other MLP, Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE:PSXP). Last month, those companies announced that they would connect their Southern Hills NGL pipeline to the DJ Basin, which would bring more NGL volumes toward Phillips 66’s Sweeny Hub. I’ve written previously about my belief that shrinking oil inventories and rising crude oil prices will spark a recovery in energy services stocks, and I’ve already explained why Core Labs and Hess Corp are favorite stocks of mine to buy. Now, after reviewing Oceaneering International’s (NYSE:OII) first-quarter results, I’m increasingly convinced that it’s a great time to add this stock to any portfolio.

2018 is turning out to be an excellent year for oil stocks. Since the start of 2018, the two most commonly quoted oil benchmark prices — Brent and WTI — are up 17% and 13%, respectively, and they are taking the prospects of many oil stocks with them. Three companies that stand out as rather impressive performers so far this year are independent oil producer Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO) and oil services companies Oceaneering International (NYSE:OII) and Noble Corporation (NYSE:NE). All three stocks are up more than 30% year to date, which I’m sure comes as a welcome sight after the past few years.

Best Energy Stocks To Invest In 2019: Phillips 66 Partners LP(PSXP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

The giants in the midstream pipeline sector are bellwetherKinder Morgan, Inc. (NYSE:KMI) and limited partnership Enterprise Products Partners LP(NYSE:EPD). However, relatively tiny Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE:PSXP) and its 5.6% yield may be the better deal for investors today. Here’s why.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

This strategy of acquiring assets from a large parent company to grow an MLP’s payout has worked well over the years. Refining giant Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) has been one of the most successful with this strategy since creating Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE:PSXP) in 2013. At that time, Phillips 66 launched an ambitious plan to grow its MLP’s distribution at a 30% compound annual rate through 2018 via a steady stream of dropdown transactions. Phillips 66 Partners is right on target, having increased the payout at a 31% compound annual growth rate since the IPO while maintaining solid financial metrics, including covering the payout with cash flow by a very comfortable 1.33 times last quarter and maintaining a conservative debt-to-EBITDA ratio of 3.2 in 2017. This strategy has also richly rewarded investors in Phillips 66 Partners, which has generated a total return of 89% since its IPO despite a recent sell-off, easily ahead of the S&P 500’s nearly 73% total return over that time frame.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

Investing in midstream master limited partnerships is generally all about the distributions, which the tax-efficient corporate structure is designed to provide to unitholders. However, that doesn’t always mean a high distribution yield is the goal, which is the key to determining if Holly Energy Partners, LP(NYSE:HEP) or Phillips 66 Partners LP (NYSE:PSXP) is the better buy. Here’s what you need to know to make an informed decision between these stocks.

  • [By Tyler Crowe, Matthew DiLallo, and Reuben Gregg Brewer]

It’s no surprise, then, that many high-yield investments in the energy sector look attractive today. We asked three of our Motley Fool investors to highlight energy stocks they see as compelling buys right now. Unsurprisingly, they picked three high-yield stocks: Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE:EPD), TerraForm Power (NASDAQ:TERP), and Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE:PSXP).

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

In the roughly five years since Phillips 66 Partners LP (NYSE:PSXP) has been publicly traded, its enterprise value has increased dramatically, going from around $2.5 billion to nearly $9.5 billion. But things are changing and the midstream partnership’s future growth isn’t likely to look like its past growth. Here are three challenges facing high-yielding Phillips 66 Partners as it looks to move into a new stage of its corporate life.

  • [By John Bromels]

Phillips 66 was the midstream (transportation and storage) and downstream (refining and marketing) arms of oil and gas giantConocoPhillips, which spun the company off in 2012.The company’s midstream operations include income from its master limited partnershipsPhillips 66 Partners(NYSE:PSXP) andDCP Midstream(NYSE:DCP), which it co-owns withEnbridge.

Canadian plane maker Bombardier (BDRAF) scored a huge win in its ongoing trade dispute with Boeing.

The U.S. International Trade Commission voted unanimously Friday that Boeing (BA)was not harmed by Bombardier and its all-new C Series jet.

The vote effectively shelves two tariffs, totaling nearly 300%, that the U.S. Commerce Department wanted to impose on Bombardier.

Boeing, the American aerospace giant, claims Canada’s Bombardier unfairly benefited from government bailout subsidies. Boeing says those funds allowed Bombardier to sell its new C Series airliner to Delta Air Lines (DAL) at “absurdly low prices” in violation of U.S. trade rules.

Delta in 2016 ordered up to 125 of the 110-seat C Series jets. Deliveries were expected to begin in spring 2018, but those plans are in question pending the outcome of the case.

While Boeing’s claims of harm come as the Trump administration strikes an aggressive posture on trade, the ITC’s appointees were all chosen by either Presidents Barack Obama or George W. Bush.

Tuesday saw a mixed session on Wall Street, with various market benchmarks moving in different directions. Investors seemed reasonably neutral about events in Singapore, where leaders from the U.S. and North Korea met and came to some minor agreements that viewed in the most favorable light could provide a road map for future negotiations. Yet investors seem more concerned about what the Federal Reserve’s interest rate setting board might do later in the week, with a two-day meeting starting today to consider whether further rate increases are warranted. Even with the relatively flat performance from the market, some companies had good news that sent their shares sharply higher. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), Sage Therapeutics (NASDAQ:SAGE), and Lands’ End (NASDAQ:LE) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Buy For 2018

According to a report by Bloomberg, Saudi Arabia wants to push the price of crude up from its current level of $65-$70to near $80 a barrel. The Middle Eastern nation needs that price to boost the valuation of its national oil company, Saudi Aramco, which it plans to take public next year. Hitting its desired sell price would provide the Kingdom with the funds needed to jump-start an investment strategy that would wean its economy off petrol dollars over the next decade.

Saudi Aramco’s valuation, however, isn’t the only one that would benefit from a pop in the price of crude. Many oil producers in the U.S. restructured their operations to run on $50 oil, so if the Saudi strategy is successful, these oil companies would produce a gusher of cash flow, which could fuel high-octane gains for investors. While that rise would likely lift the entire sector, Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) and Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO)could outperform in that scenario.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Buy For 2018: Devon Energy Corporation(DVN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

That ability to organically discover new shale plays has saved it a ton of money. The company was able to quietly gobble up 50,000 acres in Oklahoma over a four-year period for just $750 an acre. Contrast that with rivalsDevon Energy(NYSE:DVN) andMarathon Oil(NYSE:MRO). Devon spent $1.9 billion to buy Felix Energy in late 2015 for the company’s 80,000 acres in Oklahoma, paying a whopping $23,750 an acre. Meanwhile, Marathon paid $888 million for PayRock Energy and its 61,000 acres in the state, which amounted to roughly $14,500 an acre. EOG’sdeepknowledge of shale helps it know where to look so it can lock up land for next to nothing before rivals even know what’s there.

In Devon Energy’s case, it completed two of the highest-rate wells ever drilled in the nearly 100-year history of the Delaware Basin. Those wells, when combined with some prolific ones in the STACK shale play, enabled Devon to produce a huge profit in the first quarter. Marathon Oil, meanwhile, drilled record-setting wells in two formations of the Bakken region as well as several high-rate ones in the STACK, which fueled strong profits for the driller in the first quarter.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Buy For 2018: Core Laboratories N.V.(CLB)

Advisors’ Opinion:

Shares of oilfield services company Core Laboratories (NYSE:CLB) have pinballed around in the last three years to yield a total return of 0.9% in that span. That’s not exactly the type of consistency investors are after.

In the years since oil prices plunged from their $100-plus per barrel levels of 2014, many energy industry stocks have struggled — but now, they may be set to rebound. Economic growth worldwide and Middle Eastern production cuts have resulted in a more than doubling of crude oil prices since early 2016; if they remain near current levels or head higher, now could be the perfect time to add Hess Corp. (NYSE:HES), Diamond Offshore (NYSE:DO), and Core Labs (NYSE:CLB) to your portfolio.

America’s oil renaissance is powered almost exclusively by technology, as companies like Schlumberger (SLB) and Core Labs (CLB) are breathing new life into once forgotten wells. Nucor (NUE) has a similar leadership position in the steel industry thanks to technology, and that company will only benefit more that President Trump’s tariffs put the market on a more level playing field.

My Top Pick for 2017 is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company involved in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, explains small cap expert Tom Bishop, editor BI Research.

The lead drug from Anavex Life Sciences (AVXL) — called Anavex 2-73 — has just reported very promising phase 2a results in Alzheimer’s patients at the annual CTAD conference.

Test results from 25 patients are hovering near baseline after one year, or even improving for some, while the normal course is steady deterioration in cognition and activities of daily living.

No drug currently on the market can do more than slow the deterioration for at best 6 months.

This prompted the editor of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease to comment he has never seen any drug perform this well on Alzheimer’s patients. Patients and caregivers have requested to continue to be able to take the drug.

As I wrote yesterday, Lockheed’ s older F-16 jet is considered a front runner in the Indian Air Force’s potential $15 billion order for 110 fighter aircraft. Lockheed also produces the more modern (and stealth capable) F-22, and F-35 fighters. Both of these fighters are professionally thought to be effective against Russia’s S-400 long range air defense missile system. That system is currently deployed in western Syria. Last week, Lockheed also won a $247 million contract from NASA to design and build an experimental aircraft that could operate without creating a traditional sonic boom. My price target: $375.

    Raytheon (RTN)

First off, should the president decide to strike Syria without the use of American pilots, guess who produces the Tomahawk missile? That’s right. These guys. On top of that, you might have noticed that two weeks ago, Poland agreed to spend $4.75 billion on RTN’s Patriot missile defense system. By the way, this is the largest weapons deal in the history of Poland. Russia’s annexation of the Crimean peninsula has not been lost on this former Warsaw Pact nation.

True, nibblin on sponge cake, watchin the sun bake does sound pretty nice (especially on a cold gray day in March). That laid-back sensibility is what attracts visitors to his sprawling collection of Margaritaville restaurants, casinos, hotels and resorts around the globe. And now theres another option for folks who cant get enough of the Margaritaville state of mind he peddles. Buffett has announced that hes opening a string of Margaritaville retirement communities in 2017. Which got us thinking: Which other songs could be spun into successful themed retirement communities? It’s not so easy to size upWalmart(NYSE:WMT) these days. For decades, the retailer’s strategy was as reliable as the sunrise: Open up hundreds of supercenters every year, keep costs low, and offer customers “everyday low prices.”

For a long time, that strategy drove consistent profit growth and propelled the big-box chain to retail dominance, but like many things in business, it worked until it didn’t. The rise ofAmazon(NASDAQ:AMZN)and e-commerce disrupted Walmart’s leadership and undermined the strength of both its pricing strategy and brick-and-mortar expansion.

Under CEO Doug McMillon, who took the helm in 2014, Walmart has reinvented itself. The retailer has essentially stopped opening new stores, instead investing that capital into paying employees better, providing more training, cleaning up stores, and eliminating out-of-stockages — all in an effort to improve the in-store experience. The company has also aggressively pivoted to e-commerce, quickly adding grocery pickup stations at its stores, expecting to have more than 2,000 of them by the end of this year. It boosted its exposure to e-commerceby acquiring Jet.com for $3.3 billion and followed that up with smaller e-commerce acquisitions like Bonobos and Modcloth.

    Getty Images

That activist interest, more than anything CSX revealed in its earnings report on Tuesday, was enough to get Morgan Stanley’sRavi Shanker and team to upgrade its share to Equal Weight from Underweight. They explain:

The blue-sky potential is likely to continue with the news today that Mr. E. Hunter Harrison will retire from Canadian Pacific and with the WSJ reporting that he is close to teaming up with an activist investor to target CSX…In the near term, given the potential activist interest, the stock is not likely to trade on fundamentals until a resolution, which drives our upgrade from UW to EW. Our PT goes from $24 to $37 or ~18x our FY18e EPS above the peer group but close to the mid-point of the $56 bull scenario and $24 bear scenario amongst the outcomes outlined above.

Shares of CSX have jumped 18% to$43.55 at 11:35 a.m. today, whileCanadian Pacific Railway has climbed 4% to $151.01, and Union Pacific, which released better-than-expected earnings today, has gained 2.4% to $106.21.

Railroad CSX (CSX) is another stealth tech company. CSX saw its load volumes decrease this quarter, but was still able to crush earnings estimates thanks to increased efficiencies that stemmed from — you guessed it — technology. Shares of CSX were up 7.8% on the day.

While the company continues to invest in midstream projects on its balance sheet, however, Garland reiterated that its MLP,Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE:PSXP), remains an important part of our midstream growth strategy.” Garland reaffirmed the expectation that Phillips 66 Partners will “reach its growth goal of $1.1 billion in run-rate EBITDA by the end of 2018.” That will require completing additional dropdown transactions between the two companies as well as the pursuit of new organic growth projects at the MLP.

Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE: PSXP) was raised to Buy from Neutral with a $60 price target at Goldman Sachs on December 18.

My thesis on BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY) remains the same. BlackBerry is on track to transform itself into a stagnated software business doing ~$600 million in revenues per year and running at a loss. For the privilege of buying into this business, investors today pay an enterprise value of ~$3.1 billion, already excluding the net cash BlackBerry has in its books.

Against the background provided by this thesis, the title on this article might seem weird. Yet, the title is entirely true. BlackBerry smartphones, after shrinking into irrelevance for years, are now about to sell mightily again, maybe even into the tens of millions of units per year. And yet, BlackBerry itself will remain on the exact same track as described in the first paragraph of this article.

Top High Tech Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Recently, my famously bullish colleague Steve Sjuggerud mentioned a word of caution for the first time in many, many years…   Today, I (Porter) will point out a second – and in my view, even more worrisome – sign that this aging bull market is definitely running out of steam.   Before we get to the "meat and potatoes" of this missive, a reminder… I feel a tremendous obligation to provide you with the information I'd most want if our roles were reversed.   Sadly, that frequently means telling you something you don't want to hear and are likely to ignore. Often enough, telling folks the difficult truth about financial circumstances causes them to cancel their subscriptions, or as I like to say, "part as friends."   You see, we're entering into an incredibly dangerous phase of this bull market. Ironically, that also means most people will find stocks simply irresistible.

Top High Tech Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Nustar Energy L.P.(NS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Max Byerly]

NuStar Energy L.P. (NYSE:NS) declared a quarterly dividend on Friday, April 27th, Wall Street Journal reports. Stockholders of record on Tuesday, May 8th will be paid a dividend of 0.60 per share by the pipeline company on Monday, May 14th. This represents a $2.40 annualized dividend and a dividend yield of 11.49%. The ex-dividend date is Monday, May 7th.

One technology player that insiders are active in here is Jive Software (NS), which provides a social business software platform to businesses, government agencies, and other enterprises. Insiders are buying this stock into massive weakness, since shares are down sharply by 43% so far in 2014.

Jive Software has a market cap of $446 million and an enterprise value of $365 million. This stock trades at a fair valuation, with a price-to-sales of 2.68 and a price-to-book of 5.67. Its estimated growth rate for this year is 45.5%, and for next year it’s pegged at 30%. This is a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $98.18 million and its total debt is $6.60 million.

A director just bought 260,819 shares, or about $1.71 million worth of stock, at $6.53 to $6.60 per share.

From a technical perspective, JIVE is currently trending just above its 50-day moving average and below its 200-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock recently pulled back off its short-term high of $7.14 a share with heavy downside volume flows. That drop has now pushed the stock to right above its 50-day moving average at $6.10 a share.

If you’re bullish on JIVE, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above its 50-day at $6.10 a share and then once it breaks out above some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $7.14 a share to its 200-day moving average of $7.43 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 557,678 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then JIVE will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels $8.50 to $9 a share, or even $9.50 to $10 a share.

As PSX has grown as a refining outfit, it has added midstream assets pipelines, terminals, rail lines and storage farms. Owning pipelines and gathering systems is a great way to generate cash flows. Phillips enhanced that by placing them inside of its master limited partnership, Phillip 66 Partners LP (PSXP). That way, PSX is preparing to keep its profits even when oil does inevitably rise.

The other highlight this quarter was the midstream business. That segment benefited from a full quarter of Phillips 66’s recently completed Freeport LPG Export Terminal as well as a turnaround in results at DCP Midstream (NYSE:DCP). After causing the company to record a loss on its investment last quarter, the DCP Midstream investment was back in the green this quarter, benefiting from hedging and lower costs. Meanwhile, the company’s other MLP investment, Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE:PSXP), delivered another steady quarter thanks to that entity’s focus on owning stable fee-based assets.

Talk about a Barron’s bounce!Range Resources (RRC) has soared to the top of the S&P 500 today after Barron’s touted it in the pages of the magazine this weekend.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

    Range Resources gained 4.1% to $28.47, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.3% to2,375.31.

Barron’s Andrew Bary called Range Resources “an unappreciated energy play.” He explains why:

With major market indexes at record highs, natural-gas stocks are among the few depressed industry groups. Blame a warm winter and weakening gas prices.

Range Resources (ticker: RRC), a leading U.S. gas producer, looks undervalued. Its shares, at $27, are down 20% this year and are much below their 52-week high of $47, set last June. Range drilled the first well in the now-prolific Marcellus region of Pennsylvania more than a decade ago and amassed one of its largest land positions there610,000 acres. Its $4.2 billion purchase of Memorial Resource Development last September gave it access to what the company views as a prolific and underappreciated gas region: northern Louisiana

Range Resources’ market capitalization rose to $7 billion today from $6.8 billion on Friday. It reported net income of $521 million on sales of $1.4 billion in 2016.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

According to a report by PLS, producers spent more than $23 billion locking up prime positions in the Permian Basin and another $7 billion on Mid-Continent acreage acquisitions. However, most of those were smaller deals, with the top transaction weighing in at $2.5 billion. Meanwhile, the Ark-La-Tex region near the Gulf Coast quietly tied for the second hottest M&A geography in the country, largely because of Range Resources (NYSE:RRC) acquisition of Memorial Resource Development. Range Resources paid $4.2 billion, which includes the assumption of debt, to gain a leading position in the Lower Cotton Valley region of Northern Louisiana. Not only is the play saturated with natural gas, but it’s also near the Gulf Coast, which is expected to see increased demand from new petrochemical and industrial complexes as well as LNG export facilities. In other words, Range Resources made a big bet on higher gas prices along the Gulf Coast.

Just ask ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP), which recorded $432 million of deepwater dry hole costs last year. It’s a problem the company is working to address by stepping away from deepwater exploration so that it can deliver steadier returns for investors.
