Adding to the list of concerns among market participants, signs of economic challenges in Italy brought back memories of past troubles in Europe that extended the length of time that the continent suffered from disruptions following the U.S. financial crisis in the late 2000s. Investors also had to deal with plunging oil prices that led to a flood of buying in the bond market, sending interest rates plunging lower. Bad news also affected several individual companies. JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM), Infinera (NASDAQ:INFN), and CVR Energy (NYSE:CVI) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

A growing number of health care companies may face near-death experiences of their own.

A wave of hospitals and other medical companies are likely to restructure their debt or file for bankruptcy in the coming year, following the recent spate of failing retailers and energy drillers, according to restructuring professionals. Regulatory changes, technological advances and the rise of urgent-care centers have created a “perfect storm” for health care companies, said David Neier, a partner in the New York office of law firm Winston & Strawn LLC.

Some signs are already there: Health care bankruptcy filings have more than tripled this year according to data compiled by Bloomberg, and an index of Chapter 11 filings by companies with more than $1 million of assets has reached record highs in four of the last six quarters, according to law firm Polsinelli PC. Junk bonds from companies in the industry have dropped 1.4% this month, a steeper decline than the broader high-yield market, according to Bloomberg Barclays index data.

Top Energy Stocks To Own For 2019: Wells Fargo & Company(WFC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

The US financial sector has been on a solid run of late. Over the last 12 months the S&P 500 Financials Sector has returned 18.9% relative to the S&P 500 Index of 17.9%. Many analysts have formed the view that with the potential for higher market interest rates, this sector has a long runway ahead. So with this in mind I thought that it would be a good time to update my estimates of the intrinsic value of the 3 major diversified banks. Over a series of 4 articles I will value JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM), Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC) and Bank of America (NYSE: BAC). In this first article I will set the scene by reviewing the performance of the 3 banks over the last 10 years and compare their current performance to the Sector.

Renewable energy companies like Vestas Wind Systems (NASDAQOTH:VWDRY), First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR), and Ormat Technologies (NYSE:ORA) — companies whose names are far less recognizable than those like ExxonMobil and Chevron — may not be on most investors’ radars. Income investors are always on the lookout for investments that will produce ample income, and it’s hard to find companies that do better right now than business development companies. BDCs like Main Street Capital (NYSE:MAIN) and Apollo Investment (NASDAQ:AINV) make investments in different types of businesses, often providing capital through either debt or equity financing. Because BDCs often elect the favorable tax status of regulated investment companies, they have to distribute the vast majority of their taxable income to their shareholders, and that produces the impressive yields that both Main Street and Apollo give their investors.

There has not been an event or a reason to force profit taking over the last month. Investors have been confident in buying individual stocks rather than making generic directional calls.
