Thanks in part to higher oil prices, the average energy stock in the S&P 500 is up nearly 17% over the past year. However, those improving market conditions haven’t taken the entire sector higher. Three laggards that stand out are fast-growing, high-yielding MLPs Antero Midstream Partners (NYSE:AM), Shell Midstream Partners (NYSE:SHLX), and EQT Midstream Partners (NYSE:EQM), which have all lost more than 10% of their value over the past year. Because of that, these MLPs look like compelling options for income-seeking investors to consider.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

U.S. oil giant ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP)used $50 oil as a rough baseline for its 2019 capital plans as well. ConocoPhillips currently expects to invest $6.1 billion on capital projects this year — enough money to grow production per share by 8% — which it can fund on the cash flows produced at $40 oil. Add in a dividend that the company increased twice last year to a $3 billion repurchase program and ConocoPhillips is on track to return 50% of the cash it produces at $50 oil to investors this year, though some of that money will come from its cash-rich balance sheet. However, with oil in the mid-$50s, ConocoPhillips is on track to produce more cash than expected this year, which could lead it to buy back even more stock than planned as it works to whittle down a cash balance that stood at $6.4 billion at the end of 2018.

The stock market had an up-and-down day on Tuesday, with early gains giving way to small losses for most major benchmarks by the end of the session. Despite the modest declines, indexes remain near record highs, and even the ongoing back-and-forth of trade-related comments — both conciliatory and threatening — hasn’t done anything more than put a minor dent in a major advance for stocks in the third quarter. Yet some companies suffered from bad news. CenturyLink (NYSE:CTL), Jabil (NYSE:JBL), and Neogen (NASDAQ:NEOG) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

Best Energy Stocks To Buy For 2019

The Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged Wednesday but acknowledged that inflation is beginning to creep higher.

In a widely expected move, the central bank’s Federal Open Market Committee held the funds rate at a target of 1.5 percent to 1.75 percent.

However, there were several tweaks to the post-meeting statement that market participants likely will find instructive. Markets that already were anticipating that the Fed would move to a more aggressive posture this year got more to chew on.

Perhaps most significantly, the committee noted that “overall inflation and inflation for items other than food and energy have moved close to 2 percent.” That was an upgrade from the March meeting in which the FOMC said the indicators “have continued to run below 2 percent.”

Best Energy Stocks To Buy For 2019: MPLX LP(MPLX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The biggest contributor to growth during the quarter was Enbridge Energy’s Bakken assets, where earnings jumped 77% due to the completion of the Bakken Pipeline System last June. Income also rose on the Lakehead System, though that was mostly due to the timing of operating expenses, which helped offset lower pipeline rates resulting from the impact of lower U.S. corporate taxes. The Mid-Continent System’s profitability also improved due to higher storage revenue and lower costs, which offset the impact from the sale of the Ozark Pipeline to MPLX LP (NYSE:MPLX) last year.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

MPLX (NYSE:MPLX) currently expects to increase its 7.1%-yielding distribution by 10% this year. Furthermore, the MLP has $2.2 billion of expansion projects underway, which should fuel it to keep growing the payout in the future. However, an interesting catalyst developed earlier in the year when MPLX’s parent company, refining giant Marathon Petroleum, agreed to buy fellow refiner Andeavor. What makes that deal interesting to MPLX is that Andeavor owns several midstream assets as well as a stake in MLP Andeavor Logistics. It seems highly likely that Marathon will eventually sell those midstream assets to MPLX as well as merge the two MLPs. Those transactions have the potential to move the needle for MPLX, which is what makes it a compelling company to watch.

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

For investors looking for income investments, few have been as rewarding as MPLX LP (NYSE:MPLX) over the past few years. The stock has had an incredibly high yield and has almost doubled its payout over the past five years. It looks like this incredible growth rate is about to be put on hold, though, as management has decided to prioritize spending on growth over the next couple of years.

Top 10 Energy Stocks For 2019

You need to own gold; and you need to own shares in companies that find and mine it. I lay out seven reasons below, in what I’m calling the “Seven Pillars of Gold.”

Each “pillar” reinforces the argument for holding gold.

There’s some overlap between each of the pillars. In fact, it’s fair to say that many of the reasons to own gold actually segue back and forth, bumping into each other. But it’s possible to lay out seven distinct ideas. Here they are:

Pillar One: Oil prices are rising. Doubtless, you’ve noticed it if you’ve filled the fuel tank in your car with gasoline in the past nine months. From 2015 to late 2017, we enjoyed a three year respite from the olden days of $100 oil; but now, oil has decided to get up off the mat.

From a price in the $40 range a mere six months ago, we’re now into the $70s per barrel and higher prices are forecast. Of course, oil means energy, which means that higher oil costs will translate into higher prices for just about everything, not just at the fuel pump.

Top 10 Energy Stocks For 2019: Anadarko Petroleum Corporation(APC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

In addition to the visible growth from these organic expansion projects, Western Gas Partners could accelerate its growth rate by acquiring additional assets from its parent Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC). The two companies have worked together on a series of needle-moving deals over the years and have the potential to continue doing so since Anadarko Petroleum still owns several midstream assets. Currently, these assets generate more than $300 million in EBITDA, so they’re a needle-moving growth opportunity for Western Gas considering that it’s on pace to produce $1.2 billion in EBITDA this year. On top of that, Anadarko is investing $550 million to expand its midstream business, which would mean additional assets that it could eventually drop down to its MLP.

As things stand right now, analysts anticipate that at least some Iranian oil will come off the market as a result of the sanctions. That lost output would further tighten an oil market that suddenly has little margin for error thanks to red-hot demand and tame supply growth. That’s the recipe for higher oil prices and could make top-tier U.S. oil stocks Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC), Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN), and ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) big winners in the coming years.

Top 10 Energy Stocks For 2019: Devon Energy Corporation(DVN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo, Jason Hall, and Tyler Crowe]

One of the benefits of writing for the Fool is the ability to talk shop (or in our case, talk stocks) with some really smart people who don’t always hold the same views. Those varying perspectives can be invaluable because someone with a different viewpoint can spot issues that one of us might have missed. That’s why I (Matt here) recently asked a few of my colleagues to take a closer look at Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN), because I’m thinking about buying it for my portfolio.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Meanwhile, several other oil companies have unveiled more balanced plans to return capital to their investors now that the oil market is on the upswing. Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) increased its dividend 33% while also initially authorizing a $1 billion repurchase program. Devon eventually boosted that buyback up to $4 billion, which is currently enough money to retire 20% of its outstanding stock.

Devon Energy (DVN) : “They shot the lights out. They’ve got growth and are bigger than ever.”

Discovery Communications (DISCA) : “I love this combination. “

But if you look hard enough, there are still some values to be found among oil and gas stocks. Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN), Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA), and Kinder Morgan (NYSE:KMI) have all managed to buck the trend of rising stock prices. Here’s why these three stocks look incredibly cheap right now.

  • [By Logan Wallace]

Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) issued its quarterly earnings results on Tuesday. The energy company reported $0.34 earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter, missing the Thomson Reuters’ consensus estimate of $0.37 by ($0.03), Bloomberg Earnings reports. Devon Energy had a negative net margin of 1.60% and a positive return on equity of 5.48%. The business had revenue of $2.25 billion during the quarter, compared to the consensus estimate of $3.96 billion. During the same quarter in the previous year, the business posted $0.80 EPS.

Energy was the other S&P sector in the green yesterday, helped by rising oil prices and excitement about the tie up between Marathon Petroleum Corp (NYSE: MPC) and Andeavor (NYSE: ANDV). Top 10 Clean Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now

Clean energy stocks are still the best energy stocks to own right now, despite President Donald Trump pulling the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord. In fact, renewable energy production will see over 100% growth by 2025.

To help investors find the right renewable energy stocks, we’re giving Money Morning readers our top clean energy stock pick today…

Money Morning Global Energy Strategist Dr. Kent Moors says the United States might be pulling out of the climate agreement, but that won’t stop renewable energy from being crucial to meeting the global demand for energy.

Moors says the climate agreement was non-binding and voluntary, so the United States’ decision to leave it won’t change much. A more significant development is President Trump’s attempt to end the “Clean Power Plan,” an Obama-era initiative to promote clean energy, because it’s currently America’s policy instead of a non-binding agreement.

Top 10 Clean Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Allegheny Technologies Incorporated(ATI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The stock market performed well on Tuesday, responding to steady improvement among many companies as earnings season kicked into high gear. Although political issues are likely to remain in the spotlight for some investors for the foreseeable future, many market participants are looking to economic and business issues in driving their investing decisions. Major market benchmarks finished the day with gains of 0.5% to 1%, but some stocks did much better. Among the best performers on the day were Allegheny Technologies (NYSE:ATI), II-VI (NASDAQ:IIVI), and Beazer Homes (NYSE:BZH). Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so well.

Top 10 Clean Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Repligen Corporation(RGEN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

That said, there may not be a better way to build wealth. It’s the tactic Warren Buffett relied on to become a billionaire. In fact, he didn’t reach the milestone until he turned 56 years old. Investors looking for great companies they can buy and hold for the next decade (or longer) should take a closer look at consumer water technology specialist A.O. Smith (NYSE:AOS), lithium producer Albemarle (NYSE:ALB), and biopharma enabler Repligen (NASDAQ:RGEN).

To help you track down a few such companies, we asked three Motley Fool writers for their top growth stock recommendations to buy now, and they came back with Repligen (NASDAQ:RGEN), Five Below (NASDAQ:FIVE), and Shopify (NYSE:SHOP). Here’s why.

Repligen (NASDAQ:RGEN) updated its FY18 earnings guidance on Tuesday. The company provided earnings per share (EPS) guidance of $0.69-0.73 for the period, compared to the Thomson Reuters consensus estimate of $0.70. Top 10 Clean Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Murphy Oil Corporation(MUR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By David Tristan Liu]

Murphy USA (MUSA) first caught my attention after Southeastern Asset Management acquired a massive stake ($668mm) in its former parent company Murphy Oil Corporation (MUR) in Q1 2013. One thing about Murphy Oil Corporation I noticed after an initial glance through their 10-K and annual report was its ownership of a valuable fuel and convenience retailer segment with high ROIC, valuable real estate, low CAPEX requirements, and relatively decent growth prospects that was under-followed and whose underlying value was concealed by the parent company’s core production and exploration business.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Today, it was all about oil afterOPEC “reached an understanding” on capping oil production. And that made Murphy Oil (MUR) the hottest stock in the S&P 500.

  • [By Matt Egan]

Before Tuesday, Big Oil’s credit ratings had been left largely intact by S&P. But with oil sinking back to $30 a barrel, the ratings firm took action by downgrading Chevron (CVX), EOG Resources (EOG), Apache (APA), Devon Energy (DVN), Hess (HES), Marathon Oil (MRO), Murphy Oil (MUR), Continental Resources (CLR) and Southwestern Energy (SWN).

Murphy Oil (NYSE: MUR  ) has already spun off its US retail operations into Murphy Oil USAandis exploring the possibility of spinning off its U.K. refining operations. Divesting its refineries will help direct excess cash to developing new fields.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Own For 2019

By David Goodboy

Cutting-edge and high-yield are not two terms that are heard together often. Cutting-edge conjures up thoughts of growth focused internet or high-tech firms creating novel products and services. High-yield, however, makes one think of stodgy, slow-growing REITs or blue-chip stocks producing a high dividend yield but not much upside.

Despite the seemingly contradictory terms, I have discovered a company that not only yields an ultra-high dividend but operates in a little-known, cutting-edge sub-sector.

The sub-sector I am referencing is liquefied natural gas, or LNG for short.

The United States is awash with natural gas. The drilling process known as fracking has opened vast reserves of the energy source in recent years. While natural gas is leading the way toward American energy independence, it is very expensive to transport due to its gaseous nature. LNG attempts to solve this issue by turning the gas into a liquid for more cost-efficient transport.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Own For 2019: CNX Coal Resources LP(CNXC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Well, the time to start buying would have been last February–when everything started rallying. Since February 11, 2016, shares of Alliance Resource Partners (ARLP) have doubled, while Cloud Peak Energy (CLD) and CNX Coal Resources (CNXC) have tripled. Of course, Peabody Energy was fast approaching bankruptcy then, so missed out on that amazing run.

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

Finally, there’s EOG Resources (EOG) . The stock is putting in a double bottom and if support holds up at $91 to $93, the stock could quickly head to $106, Boroden’s work suggests.

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

Cramer said he tried to buck this trend by investing in EOG Resources (EOG) and Marathon Oil (MRO) but was wrong on both counts. In the case of EOG, even having the best properties wasn’t enough to ward off the collapse in oil prices. Meanwhile, Marathon’s decision to spin off its refining business left it with no cushion to stem its losses.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Shares of EOG Resources Inc.(NYSE:EOG) rose more than 12% last month — adding almost $8 billion to its market value — thanks to higher oil prices, a potential asset sale, and a bullish analyst report.

CVR Partners’ fertilizer plant is located in Coffeyville, Kansas, adjacent to the refinery owned by CVR Refining (NYSE: CVRR). CVR Energy (NYSE: CVI), majority-owned by Carl Icahn via Icahn Enterprises (NYSE: IEP), is the general partner and owns most of the units for both CVR Partners and CVR Refining.

CVR Energy, Inc. (NYSE: CVI) is currently correcting the bullish 5 waves cycle from November 2016 low as a triple three structure reaching equal legs area $20.48 – $19.56 . The move can extend lower toward the 50-61.8 percent Fibonacci area ( $18.98 – $17.34 ) as a double three but will remain supported as the stock is still looking for a move higher toward at least $31 to finish 3 waves correcting 2014 cycle. If the stock fails to make new highs after bouncing from the current inflection area , then the pullback can extend lower against $12.03 low which should hold to allow CVI to the resume higher later on

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Own For 2019: Occidental Petroleum Corporation(OXY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Chris Lange]

Occidental Petroleum Corp.s (NYSE: OXY) short interest decreased to 11.44 million shares from the previous reading of 11.77 million. Shares recently traded at $69.65, in a 52-week range of $57.20 to $78.09.

  • [By Chris Lange]

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

We have seen several dividend cuts in the recent past, including Anadarko Petroleum cutting its dividend by 81%…and we expect more companies to follow suit. Chesapeake Energy (CHK), ConocoPhillips (COP), Encana,Marathon Oil and Noble Energy (NBL) are among energy companies that have also cut dividends in the past 12 months, but dividend requirements even after several cuts will consume ~26% of 2016 estimated cash flow at current dividend rates (15% excluding Occidental Petroleum (OXY)) for the large cap E&Ps we cover. We believe most of the companies with a dividend yield of more than 1.5% should consider cutting the dividend and find the following companies more likely than not to reduce dividends:Apache (2.5% yield),Devon Energy (4%),Encana (1.5%) andMarathon Oil (2.5%). We believe Canadian Natural Resource (CNQ) (3.0%) is likely to maintain its dividend while Occidental (4.5%) has the financial strength to maintain or even increase the dividend…

  • [By Michael Flannelly]

Early on Monday, analysts at Deutsche Bank lowered their price target on Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY) to reflect a lower-than-expected valuation of an asset that the oil and gas exploration company is trying to sell.

Though the analysts lowered OXY’s price target from $114 to $109, they still maintain a “Buy” rating on the stock. The new price target suggests a 22% upside to the stock’s Friday closing price of $89.49.

Deutsche Bank analyst Paul Sankey said, “Bloomberg Finance LP reports that Oxy is seeking sale of 40% of Mideast operations for around $8bn, which would imply $20bn total value for the unit. However reportedly some suitors are valuing the asset at around $15bn. This is a relatively negative valuation against our previous view that Oxy would be seeking $25+bn for its MENA business. We are cutting our price target to $109/share to reflect this lower implied valuation.”

Occidental Petroleum shares were up 96 cents, or 1.07%, during pre-market trading on Monday. The stock is up 16.81% year-to-date.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Occidental Petroleum Corp. (NYSE: OXY) dropped about 1.6% Friday, to post a new 52-week low of $64.19 after closing at $65.25 on Thursday. The stock’s 52-week high is $78.48. Volume was about 15% below the daily average of around 4.7 million shares. The company had no specific news.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Own For 2019: CGG(CGG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

First up is French oil service firm CGG Veritas (CGG)
. The Eurozone-based energy stock hasn’t exactly posted blockbuster performance in 2013, but investors who ignore CGG for the final stretch of the year could be making a big mistake. That’s because of a bullish technical pattern that’s emerging in shares right now.

CGG spent most of the last eight months looking anything but bullish. But an ascending triangle pattern is changing that. The pattern is formed by horizontal resistance to the upside at $26, and uptrending support to the below shares. Basically, as CGG bounces in between those two technical levels, it’s getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above $26. When that happens, traders have a buy signal.

The ascending triangle pattern in CGG Veritas isn’t exactly textbook. That’s because the setup is forming at the bottom of a downtrend, rather than in the middle of an uptrend – but it’s a mistake to get caught up on the textbook pictures of what trading patterns are supposed to look like. On a move through $26, the trading implications are just as actionable.

Oil prices haven’t gotten off to the fast start many expected, falling around 6% on average during the first quarter of the year. That slump came despite OPEC’s best efforts since producing nations have achieved fairly good compliance on their planned output cuts. Top 10 Energy Stocks To Buy For 2018: Statoil ASA(STO)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jayson Derrick]

BP plc (ADR) (NYSE: BP), Royal Dutch Shell plc (ADR) (NYSE: RDS-A) (NYSE: RDS-B) and Statoil ASA(ADR) (NYSE: STO) are expected to outperform their peers by offering: 1) the greatest rate of change in cost reduction through technology and innovation, 2) upstream portfolios with an attractive risk to reward profile and 3) sufficient liquidity to invest in future growth.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Should oil prices recover, we believe that deepwater drilling activity growth should lag growth in US shale activity, as project economics is generally better in US shales, and E&Ps involved in US shales are generally quicker to react. Deepwater activity is largely comprises a handful of companies (Petrobras (PBR), Statoil (STO), Total (TOT), Shell (RDS.A), BP (BP), ONGC, ExxonMobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX)) and it is unlikely that these companies can meaningfully increase their rig demand in a short period of time to absorb the current oversupply. Thus, should oil prices rise in 2018, rig demand may increase, but likely not enough to tighten the market, given that supply equaling 43% of current working rig count is stacked and new supply equaling 25% of working rig count is under-construction and should be entering the market in the coming years. As a result, while we expect some improvement in rig utilization owing to rig retirements, it will unlikely be strong enough to meaningfully improve rates in 2018 above spot levels. Any demand increase in the interim could slow rig retirements materially, and be self-defeating. We thus are Sell rated on Transocean, Atwood and Noble.

Hot Energy Stocks To Watch For 2018

While oil exploration and production sector (E&P) has recently been beaten down with the SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (NYSEARCA:XOP) down 21.21% YTD, the area seems to be a good place to look for value. The first name that comes to mind for many is Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM), but in my experience, when a sector is beaten down, value lies with the smaller companies. With Chesapeake (NYSE:CHK) once again having positive free cash flow, it seemed to be a good opportunity. But with expectations for negative cash flows once again in 2017 overall, it just did not seem enticing. While CHK may be beaten down slightly more than deserved, the upside created is simply not enough.

CHK did offer one thing of benefit, though. In a list of its peers, I discovered WPX Energy, Inc. (NYSE:WPX). The search was over. The hidden gem had been unearthed. Most investors have never even heard of WPX. There are so many oil E&P companies, why would anyone choose to buy WPX? Especially since it has rose 180% in 2016. The three primary appeals for WPX are:

According to a report by PLS, producers spent more than $23 billion locking up prime positions in the Permian Basin and another $7 billion on Mid-Continent acreage acquisitions. However, most of those were smaller deals, with the top transaction weighing in at $2.5 billion. Meanwhile, the Ark-La-Tex region near the Gulf Coast quietly tied for the second hottest M&A geography in the country, largely because of Range Resources (NYSE:RRC) acquisition of Memorial Resource Development. Range Resources paid $4.2 billion, which includes the assumption of debt, to gain a leading position in the Lower Cotton Valley region of Northern Louisiana. Not only is the play saturated with natural gas, but it’s also near the Gulf Coast, which is expected to see increased demand from new petrochemical and industrial complexes as well as LNG export facilities. In other words, Range Resources made a big bet on higher gas prices along the Gulf Coast.

Following a series of M&A announcements in the oilfield-services sector since the onset of the oil market downturn, French oil-field service company Technip and U.S. oilfield equipment company FMC Technologies (NYSE:FTI) hooked up in an all-stock deal valuing the combined company at $13 billion. Shareholders of each company will own 50% of the combined entity, to be named TechnipFMC, which implies a roughly $6.5 billion acquisition valuation for each entity. The transaction, which should close early next year, will “combine Technip’s innovative systems and solutions, state-of-the-art assets, engineering strengths, and project management capabilities with FMC Technologies’ leading technology, manufacturing, and service capabilities.” Further, it should save $400 million in annual costs by 2019. Moreover, it will enable the combined company to compete better against larger oil-field service rivals Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI), Halliburton (NYSE:HAL), and Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB), which have all gained strength during the downturn either through M&A activities or cost savings initiatives.
