Brighthouse Leaps Into the Annuity Future

Sen. Bernie Sanders brought the worlds of health insurance, annuities and advanced estate planning together last week when he put together a list of ideas for paying for a shift toward a single-payer health insurance system.

Few observers expect to see Sanders get his single-payer health insurance system bill, S. 1804, signed into law. The list of financing ideas is not even part of the current text of the bill.

But Sanders, an independent from Vermont who teams up with the Democrats in the Senate, did shine a spotlight on what has been a powerful estate planning technique: the grantor-retained annuity trust.

Sanders proposed changing the rules governing GRATs “and other types of trusts and valuation techniques,” citing reports that billionaires have used GRATs and similar techniques to save about $100 billion in taxes since 2000.

Top 5 Heal Care Stocks To Watch Right Now

Operators who have a large store concentration in B & C type shopping malls are getting crushed, and The Gap (NYSE:GPS) is exposed to these exact locations. In aggregate, monthly mall traffic declines are still averaging mid-single-digit territory so apparel retailers have two options: sustain their store footprint or downsize.

The question is, which is the better long term alternative? Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and other online pure-plays remain a threat to retailers given their lower cost structure and customer convenience factors. Given customer conversion rates can be high for certain brands, it can usually pays off to shutter underperforming locations (see American Eagle’s latest conference call transcript). Although this is still up for debate, sustaining a massive store footprint is likely a directional disadvantage, especially in this environment.

A Store Problem

GPS has approximately 3,650 stores worldwide. This footprint is about 3-4x the size of other large competitors with the exception of a few names. Gap currently does not plan on reducing its store footprint, which is problem since keeping physical stores and building out an online presence has caused SG&A to inflate quickly. And these costs are not going away.

Japanese trading company Itochu (OTCPK:ITOCY) has a tough act to follow – its own meaningful improvement over the past five years. The company was more willing than most of its Japanese trading peers to deemphasize commodity/resource businesses, and it moved fairly quickly here, building up non-resource businesses like its food, machinery, and finance operations. Those moves have led to better ROE and cash flow margin performance versus its peers, and Itochu shares have done well relative to peers like Mitsui (OTCPK:MITSY), Mitsubishi (OTCPK:MSBHY), Marubeni (OTCPK:MARUY), and Sumitomo (OTCPK:SSUMY) over that time.

An ETF is a fund that tracks indexes such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500. ETFs basically let you trade an entire sector instead of having to pick and choose specific stocks to trade within a sector. ETFs are also a great way for you to hedge against rising interest rates. When it comes to equities, a good ETF to monitor is the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE Arca: DIA). Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Buy For 2018: The Baltic Dry Index Soaring, and Double Crown Resources (DDCC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew Briar]

Don’t let the lethargic Baltic Dry Index fool you — commodities aren’t being used less now than they have been in the past. In fact, most commodities are still seeing increased consumption, including the dry goods the Baltic Dry Index is supposed to gauge transportation for. The Baltic Dry Index remains in a bit of a long-term funk because, as much as the world continues to increase their need for materials like iron ore, grain, and gravel, the world also still has too much capacity to deliver them. See, too many maritime vessels are competing for too few dollars, serving as a drag on the value of the Baltic Dry Index lower. After all, the BDI is mostly just a measure of the daily shipping rates for ocean-born transportation services. It’s not actually a measure of consumption of those materials consumption.

It’s not only a scenario that doesn’t work against young-and-hungry company Double Crown Resources Inc. (OTCMKTS:DDCC), but it may actually be a scenario that bodes well for it.

Thought question: What if there was a way to remove all the risks and hassle of shipping goods such as iron ore pellets or beans or salt (commodities that are normally delivered in drybulk vessels) yet still utilize all the flexibility of intermodal containers? There is. It’s called Translock2, or Translock Squared, and it’s going to revolutionize the way many material companies deliver their goods, and the way many drybulk commodity buyers use their material.

The image nearby is a Translock2 container. It should look vaguely familiar. It’s essentially an intermodal container in terms of size and shape, but mechanically is a delivery and dispensing platform for drybulk goods like sand or rice. When most investors think of potential competitive threats to drybulk shippers like Star Bulk Carriers Corp. (NASDAQ:SBLK) or Euroseas Ltd. (NASDAQ:ESEA), Double Crown Resources Inc (OTCMKTS:DDCC) doesn’t come to mind. Indeed, DDCC doesn’t come to mind for many investors at all, as for all intents and purposes the company it is today didn’t exist until a few months ago. Age, however, has nothing to do with how disruptive it could prove to be for the likes of Euroseas or Star Bulk Carriers. Its underlying idea is brilliant, and it’s only a matter of time before it catches on within the commodity-transportation community.

What if there was a way to remove all the risks and hassle of shipping things like pellets or beans or salt – normally delivered in drybulk vessels – but still utilize all the flexibility of intermodal containers (the big 20-foot boxes that fit on a truck and a train and on top of the deck of a boat)? There is. It’s called Translock2 (Translock Squared). It was designed by Double Crown Resources, and it’s going to revolutionize the way many material companies deliver their goods.

The design allows commodities like sand or livestock feed to be moved with all the flexibility of intermodal transportation, but without any of the headache of aggregating and splitting up those goods to get them properly shipped to their final destination. With Translock2, drybulk purchases are packaged up by the seller at the supply source, and then delivered — just as ordered — all the way to the buyer’s site in the container. No material is lost en route, and no distributor or middleman needs to bother splitting up one large order into smaller ones.

Despite the conclusions that may be drawn by the renewed weakness of the Baltic Dry Index, demand for commodities isn’t drying up. In fact, most commodities continue to see increased consumption… including the dry goods the Baltic Dry Index is supposed to measure shipping costs for. The Baltic Dry Index is rolling over again simply because as much as the world continues to up their need for materials such as iron ore, grains, and gravel, the market to deliver those goods remains saturated. That is, too many boats, trains and trucks are fighting for the existing level of business, pulling the value of the Baltic Dry Index and other shipping-cost measures lower. After all, the BDI is ultimately just a measure of the daily shipping rates for maritime vessels – it’s not actually a measure of materials consumption.

Not only does a falling Baltic Dry Index not work against young-and-hungry company Double Crown Resources Inc. (OTCMKTS:DDCC), it may actually favor it.

Despite the lackluster economic headlines and so-so pricing, commodities aren’t being used less and less. Indeed, most commodities continue to see growing consumption. It’s not only a scenario that works in favor of young-and-hungry company Double Crown Resources Inc. (OTCMKTS:DDCC), but what makes Double Crown such a compelling opportunity is that it’s rather insensitive to commodity price fluctuation.

What’s the biggest risk and hassle of shipping things like pellets or beans or salt? Normally they’re delivered in drybulk vessels, which works, but is rather ineffective. At various points between a supplier and a customer, such goods have to be split up, re-routed, taken off a boat and put on a train (or vice versa). Not only do all the middlemen get expensive, mistakes and spillage cost money.

It’s not only a scenario that bodes well for an up-and-coming company Double Crown Resources Inc. (OTCMKTS:DDCC).

What if there were a way to remove all the risks and hassle of shipping things like pellets or beans or salt [which are normally delivered in drybulk vessels] but still utilize all the flexibility of intermodal containers… the big box containers that are just at home on the deck of a ship as they are on a flatbed truck as they are on a train car? There is. It’s called Translock2 (Translock Squared), and it’s going to revolutionize the way many material companies deliver their goods. Commodity companies now have an alternative way of shipping their product without constantly handling it – and losing some of it – en route to its final destination.

If it looks vaguely familiar to most, it’s essentially an intermodal container in terms of size and shape, but mechanically serves as delivery and dispensing platform for drybulk goods like rice, fertilizer, etc. The design allows commodities to be moved with all the flexibility of intermodal transportation, but without any of the headache of aggregating and splitting up those goods en route to their final destination. With Translock2, drybulk purchases are packaged up by the seller at the supply source, and then delivered — just as ordered — all the way to the buyer’s site in the container. No muss, no fuss, and no middleman. It cuts down on expenses, and lost material.

Its development worth noting, in that it explicitly circumvents the need for drybulk maritime vessels, and turns intermodal container ships into dry cargo vessels.

The recent unveiling of the Translock 2 containers won’t actually change the amount of drybulk material we as a species consume. But, it will offer dry goods suppliers an easier and often cheaper option to expensive and often difficult dry goods vessel shipping. Remember, the Baltic Dr

Who has PARP? A poly ADP-ribose polymerase inhibitor (PARPi) kills cancer cells by interfering tumor DNA repair pathway with the potential to treat ovarian, breast and prostate cancer. Studies have shown that patients with BRCA mutations (BRCAmut) respond to PARPi. AstraZenecas (AZN) PARPi was approved in 2014 whileClovis Oncology (CLVS) and Tesaro (TSRO) both have positive Phase III data. Clovis licensed its PARPi from Pfizer (PFE) in 2011 and Tesaro licensed its PARPi from Merck (MRK) in 2012, after Sanofis (SNY) PARPi (later demonstrated that it cannot block PARP) failed in Phase III in early 2011.

Look out below! Shares of Tesaro (TSRO) have dropped more than 10% this afternoon after AstraZeneca (AZN) released stronger-than-expected Phase 3 trial data on a its ovarian cancer treatment.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

The Street’sAdam Feuerstein has the details on AstraZeneca’s strong data and its impact on Tesaro:

AstraZeneca’s (AZN) PARP inhibitor Lynparza delayed the recurrence of ovarian cancer by more than two years compared to a placebo, according to results from a phase III study presented Tuesday.

The strong benefit observed with Lynparza as ovarian cancer maintenance therapy exceeded investor expectations and bolsters AstraZeneca against a competing PARP inhibitor from Tesaro (TSRO).

Feuerstein also notes that AstraZeneca’s data could be good newsClovis Oncology (CLVS), which also had a PARP inhibitor approved recently, if it means that its drug could work as well as Astra’s.

In February, Leerink cut Tesaro, arguing that the rally in its shares due to a potential takeover had run too far. Will it still be a takeover target?

Shares of Tesaro have dropped 14% to $148.01 at 3:28 p.m. today, while AstraZeneca has gained 1.1% to $30.41, and Clovis Oncology has jumped 9.8% to$66.55.

He’s one of China’s richest men — THE richest, according to some rankings — with a net worth of roughly $42 billion.

His business interests range from social media to artificial intelligence, and his company has invested in Snapchat and Tesla. The latest news: The tech giant he founded is more valuable than Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook (FB, Tech30).

But who is Ma Huateng?

The founder of Tencent — nicknamed “Pony” thanks to a surname that translates to “horse” in English — is notoriously press shy, and rarely grants interviews.

Ma worked in the pager business after graduating from southern China’s Shenzhen University in 1993 with a degree in computer science.

From pagers to messaging platforms

But it wasn’t until five years after leaving college that the low-profile businessman founded Tencent (TCEHY), and began work on the communications platforms that would turn the company into a global tech titan.

Tencent developed a reputation as a copycat in its early days, and was accused of taking western products and adapting them for the Chinese market. Its PC messaging platform, for example, closely resembled a similar product from AOL.

foreign investment: Extra Space Storage Inc(EXR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew Frankel]

The final REIT type I like right now is self-storage, particularly Extra Space Storage (NYSE:EXR).

First, I should mention that this could prove to be the most volatile company on the list. Self-storage isn’t as defensive as retail or healthcare simply because of its lease structure. Generally, you don’t sign a multi-year lease on a storage unit — you just pay each month that you want to keep it. This makes it easier for tenants to vacate the properties during tough times.

foreign investment: SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Keith Fitz-Gerald]

You can see that when I superimpose the descending triangle pattern on the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE Arca: SPY), which mirrors the S&P 500 Index.

  • [By WWW.KIPLINGER.COM]

If youre not familiar, the VOO is one of three S&P 500-tracking ETFs the other two are the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) and the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV). Each operates slightly differently, but at the end of the day, each provides very honest, tight tracking of the S&P 500. The VOO is simply the cheapest at just 0.05% in expenses, which accounts for most of the slight performance edge over its ETF brethren.

  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Since so many managed stock funds can’t beat the S&P 500, it makes good sense to just invest in an S&P 500 index fund. Even billionaire Warren Buffett, known for his investing brilliance, endorses that idea. He saysthat in his will, he offers these instructions for the money left for his wife: “Put 10% of the cash in short-term government bonds and 90% in a very low-cost S&P 500 index fund. (I suggest Vanguard’s.)” You can do so through many index funds from many fund companies — just be sure to choose one with low fees, as there are very low fees to be found. A particularly easy way to invest in the S&P 500 is through an exchange-traded fund (ETF) such as theSPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(NYSEMKT:SPY). ETFs work much like stocks, letting you buy as many or as few shares as you want throughout the trading day. A SPY share recently traded for about $238 per share, sported a dividend yield of close to 2%, and chargedjust 0.1% in annual fees.

Many ETFs–especially the large diversified ones such as SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) , PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) and iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) –in and of themselves are not dangerous.

Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG), Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) or Facebook Inc (NASDAQ: FB) could join fellow FAANG juggernaut Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), on the list, increasing the Dow’s overlap with the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE: SPY) and better aligning the Dow with the S&P 500’s tech representation.

Best Bank Stocks To Buy Right Now

Say the term “junk bonds” and you will get several reactions from investors. First, market veterans will recall the heady days of the 1980s when junk bonds first became in vogue as a capital-raising tool. Secondly, some investors will look at you with disbelief, thinking junk bonds no longer even exist. And newer market participants might have no idea what you’re talking about.

This article will explain junk bonds and provide three ways to capture profits from these little-understood financial instruments.

What Is A Junk Bond?
Junk bonds got their start in the 1970s when they were used to finance companies that could not qualify for investment-grade bonds. Also known by more forgiving moniker “high-yield bonds,” junk bonds truly revolutionized finance, as they enabled firms not considered traditionally bankable firms to raise capital.

Junk bonds, like all bonds, are an IOU from a business that includes how much is owed, the maturity date, and the interest (coupon) that is paid. The significant difference is the coupon, or interest rate, charged.
