Top Value Stocks For 2018: L Brands, Inc.(LB)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Asit Sharma]

Stock in specialty retailer L Brands, Inc. (NYSE:LB) slumped 22.5% in March, according to data fromS&P Global Market Intelligence.

L Brands’ woes began on the first day of the month, as shares lost nearly 14% in the first trading session following the company’s February 28 release of fourth-quarter and full-year 2017 earnings. Although fourth-quarter sales rose 7.4%, to $4.8 billion, comparable sales improved by just 2 percentage points. Breaking down comparable sales results, “comps” at Victoria’s Secret retail stores declined 6% during the last six months. Deteriorating traffic into Victoria’s Secret’s largely mall-based stores is a significant point of concern for shareholders — the segment is responsible for nearly 60% of total company revenue.

This female-focused retailer is leading the retail apocalypse. Shares have been crushed this year by plunging over 40% in the last four months. Already suffering from the overall retail malaise, L Brands exasperated the downside by issuing weak guidance at the end of 2017. Combined with analyst downgrades, the stock only collapsed under the pressure.

Top 10 Low Price Stocks To Own Right Now

For pretty much three years now, Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ:SBUX) stock has been almost remarkably range-bound. SBUX stock had been one of the market’s better performers for years, but since July 2015, it has stayed almost entirely between a low price of $54 and a high price of $63.

At this point, I’m not sure what gets the stock out of its range. The unfortunate incident in Philadelphia last week hopefully won’t have a long-term impact. I like Starbucks as a consumer, and it’s not as if business is going to collapse.

But the problem remains that Starbucks stock is pricing in more growth than it appears capable of generating. Tax reform has brought in the earnings multiple assigned to SBUX stock, which now sits at a more reasonable 21x. But that still assumes a level of growth that I’m not quite sure Starbucks is capable of generating long term.

And in the near term, with earnings due on Thursday, there’s reason for caution as well. All told, I do think there’s an attractive price for Starbucks stock, but I don’t think $58 is quite it.

Middleby (NASDAQ:MIDD) has been a big player in the kitchen equipment industry for a long time. Yet despite moves intended to grow its business and expand more aggressively into the consumer appliance space, Middleby hasn’t been able to make much progress for shareholders since mid-2015. The moves Middleby initiated back then in response to challenging conditions have taken a lot of effort, but the results haven’t been as clear as many would have liked.

Wednesday was a strong day on Wall Street, and major benchmarks posted solid gains of around 1%. Market participants were generally happy about oil prices moving back into the $70s, hoping for a rebound in hard-hit areas of the country that had taken advantage of the triple-digit oil prices of the early 2010s by dramatically ramping up production of shale plays and similar opportunities. Yet even with the generally favorable mood, some stocks weren’t able to join the rally. Kinross Gold (NYSE:KGC), Weibo (NASDAQ:WB), and Middleby (NASDAQ:MIDD) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-A) (NYSE: BRK-B) CEO Warren Buffett has always been a skeptic of cryptocurrencies, and he didn’t pull any punches when it comes to bitcoin at Berkshire’s annual shareholder meeting over the weekend. Buffett called bitcoin “probably rat poison squared,” and he clarified that stance further in an interview with CNBC.

Perhaps no stock portfolio is more closely followed than that of Warren Buffett-led Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B). While I feel like most “Buffett stocks” are great long-term investments to make at any time — after all, that’s why Buffett chose them — there are some that stand out as particularly attractive opportunities.

The biggest threat facing Brink’s is the very nature of the industry it inhabits. While cash will, for the foreseeable future, probably serve a purpose in the global economy, I don’t think it can be argued that its use will soon be on the decline. Mastercard Inc (NYSE:MA) has long maintained that about 85% of the world’s transactions were facilitated using cash. Last year, the company updated that number to being just above 80% and, given current trends, I believe this number will continue to fall.

Just three years ago, Fitbit (NYSE:FIT) was a dominant player in the wearables space thanks to the popularity of fitness trackers. Investors scrambled to get a piece of Fitbit as it looked all set to conquer the wearables market with a variety of fitness bands that were constantly updatedto stay ahead of the competition, giving the company an 80% shareof fitness trackers in the U.S.

10 Best Chemical Stocks To Buy For 2016

Susquehannas Pablo Zuanic takes a look at consumer food companies in the wake of Brexit, and writes that Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE), Mondelez (MDLZ) and SodaStream (SODA) have the most exposure to the British pound and euro, which are falling today.

Daniel Acker/Bloomberg

For bargain hunters, he recommends Mondelez over CCE, given soda taxes and the fact that Cokes (KO) 48% stake means it wont be acquired. But overall he says that M&A in Europe is not more likely, as companies with plenty of U.S. dollar assets will have fertile hunting ground for acquisitions.

In general, he writes that consumers have to be selective, with an eye toward how this vote could impact the U.S. election:

Self-help and NA exposure now even more attractive. We think our guiding thesis of buying self-help stories with mainly NA exposure becomes even more relevant in this new context. Our top picks are, not coincidentally, Kraft Heinz (KHC), Treehouse Foods (THS), and Molson Coors (TAP). Re our other Positive-rated stock BUD, we remind investors after the SAB deal NA is less than 30% of EBITDA pro forma. Even taking the aggressive guidance of 16% synergies and cost savings (of target company revenues) the EPS accretion may be in the mid/high teens.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One biopharmaceutical player that’s rapidly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is GTx (GTXI), which is dedicated to the discovery, development and commercialization of small molecules that selectively target hormone pathways to treat cancer, osteoporosis and bone loss, muscle loss and other serious medical condition. This stock has been hammered by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off sharply by 53%.

If you look at the chart for GTx, you’ll notice that this stock recently gapped down sharply from over $4 to below $1.50 a share with heavy downside volume. Following that gap down, shares of GTXI have rebounded sharply and started to uptrend, with the stock moving higher from its low of $1.31 to its recent high of $1.96 a share. During that move, shares of GTXI have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of GTXI within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GTXI if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $1.96 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.35 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then GTXI will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from August that started just above $4 a share. Some possible upside targets if GTXI gets into that gap with volume are $2.50 to $3 a share, or possibly even $3.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy GTXI off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support at $1.50 a share. One can also buy GTXI off strength once it takes out $1.96 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
