Best Safest Stocks To Buy Right Now

In a junior sector that has become quite a stock-picker’s market over the past nine months, I find some of the safest and lowest risk opportunities come when a company is undergoing a major change. Atlantic Gold (OTCPK:SPVEF) was one such idea I highlighted last year, as the company was set to transform itself into Canada’s newest junior gold producer. The stock has since moved from US$0.60 to US$1.40 and the re-rating I expect has nearly come to fruition. A company with a similar profile that I’ve had my eye on was Harte Gold (OTCPK:HRTFF), but the stock got well ahead of itself earlier this year and I exited my position. Since that time the stock has spent the last six months consolidating and finally looks it may be ready to resume the new uptrend it began earlier this year.

Fuel cell stocks tend to be more volatile than the average equity, owing at least in part to the ever-changing business models of the industry. But even that makes it difficult to explain the wild ride Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP) shareholders have been on in the last year.

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

That much becomes clear after taking a look at fuel cell stocks Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) and Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP). The companies generated just $235 million in revenue combined last year. While that would seem to indicate that the technology has a ways to go, a closer look shows both companies are on an upward trajectory as they position to exploit decarbonization trends. It also reveals two different growth strategies.

Personally, I look forward to getting back into gold and gold stocks with my own money… They have fallen, a lot, and I believe we're at the early stages of a major long-term bull market in gold stocks.   But even after such a fall, and even with my long-term outlook, I personally can't get excited just yet…   Unfortunately, gold is still loved… And it's still in a downtrend.

Akre capital often holds positions for over ten years. As long as a company is able to keep increasing its economic value, the firm will hold a stock. Although the firm is a long-term investor, Akre doesn't attribute its success to ‘buy and hold' investing, but to the quality of the companies they buy. Some of the companies' long-term holdings have included Markel Corporation (NYSE: MKL), Dollar Tree, Inc. (NASDAQ: DLTR) and Enstar Group Ltd. (NASDAQ: ESGR).

Strong balance sheets and consistent demand for discrete processors and GPUs across the board has kept the likes of Micron and semi-behemoth NVIDIA trucking past the rest of the market, both posting top and bottom line revenue results for seven consecutive quarters. Other companies like Intel and Qualcomm, whose processor sales rely mainly on the sales figures of PCs and devices they’re included in, have also surged ahead as market leaders. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) posted record annual revenue over the course of  2017 and both Intel and Qualcomm remain leading candidates in the M&A game despite the block of latter’s deal with Broadcom Ltd. Marvell Technology (MRVL) and Cavium (CAVM) both posted large gains on Monday, as investors wagered Marvell’s $6 billion deal to buy Cavium is now less likely to be blocked by Beijing. Broadcom (AVGO) , which has bought plenty of chipmakers over the last few years and has indicated it’s open to making smaller deals after seeing the Trump Administration shoot down its hostile bid for Qualcomm, also has to be pleased at the possibility that Beijing won’t act as a deterrent to chip industry dealmaking going forward.

Top 5 Clean Energy Stocks To Watch For 2018

November has been a bad month for Clean Energy Fuels (NASDAQ:CLNE). The natural gas refueling company has lost around 10% of its value this month, with most of the decline coming after the company released mixed third-quarter results. I am saying mixed because Clean Energy had missed the top line estimate by around 6.5%, even though it trumped the earnings estimate by $0.02 per share.

What gives?

It looks like investors were disappointed by the fact that Clean Energy reported just 5% increase in revenue from the year-ago period, which was identical to the growth in its volumes. Thus, it is evident that Clean Energy Fuels was unable to take advantage of an improvement in natural gas prices last quarter.

In fact, in the third quarter of 2016, the average Henry Hub Natural Gas spot price was 11% higher as compared to the year-ago period. But, whatever growth that Clean Energy delivered on the top line was volume driven. This can be attributed to the fact that Clean Energy Fuels enters into agreements with its clients to sell gas at fixed price contracts that are subject to a price cap. As such, the company was unable to take advantage of the increase in spot prices.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Wednesday was a down day for the stock market, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average posting triple-digit losses even as broader benchmarks had much smaller moves. Market participants largely focused their attention on the inflation front, as March consumer price index numbers showed a 0.2% rise in the core rate excluding food and energy. Year-over-year price changes have accelerated, seemingly giving the Federal Reserve more justification to continue raising interest rates. Yet even though many stocks generally react unfavorably to inflation fears, there were some big gainers that had good news. Hilton Worldwide Holdings (NYSE:HLT), Pretium (NYSE:PVG), and Applied Optoelectronics (NASDAQ:AAOI) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

Its been said of biotech that its the wild west of the investment world. There may be gold in the hills but you better have a good map and a keen eye to find it. One such company that is shimmering of late is Ventripoint Diagnostics (OTC: VPTDF), the Toronto, Ontario based developer of medical devices. With its new cardiac imaging device, the VMS Plus , Ventripoint is changing the way doctors diagnose and ultimately treat cardiac disease.

According to various small cap analysts, Ventripoint Diagnostics (OTC: VPTDF) is getting traction as a buy, helped no doubt by the publicity regarding the VMS Plus as well as the companys conversion of outstanding debt into share purchase warrants.

The medical device industry is a tricky space for investors. More than just the financials are at stake the industry is highly regulated and most devices fall under the jurisdiction of the FDA, which can be unpredictable in its responses to new products, drugs, and technology. Nonetheless, the US is the largest medical device market in the US, with and estimated market size of $155 billion. While Canada lags the US in medical device market share it is projected to grow to $8.6 billion (USD) by 2020 – the Canadian market, which houses Ventripoint Diagnostics (OTC: VPTDF), is sophisticated and mature, with a strong demand for high-quality medical technologies. A report by Visiongain predicts that globally the medical devices market could reach almost $400 billion by Q417.

Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Watch For 2018: URS Corporation(URS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ian Wyatt, Publisher & Chief Investment Strategist, Wyatt Investment Research]

Fund manager John Mirshekari, of the Fidelity Low-Priced Stock Fund, recommended shares of URS (URS), an engineering and construction contractor.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Fidelty’s John Mirshekaritook a look at URS(URS) today at the Value Investing Congress. His takeaway: The stock could double in two years.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

His analysis started with URS’s use of its free cash. During the past, it hasn’t been pretty. They spent 6.3 billion on eight acquisitions, they’ve bought companies at valuations higher than own stock and return-on-equity has dropped from high teens to just 6%.

The problem hasn’t been its business: Its return on tangible capital is 17%. Instead, the problem is that its management hasn’t maximized value through capital allocation. URS has lowest valuation: 9x 2013 cash earnings in its industry.

Part of the problem: Management incentives are based on net income. This year, however, relative total shareholder return was added., something Mirshekari calls”a step in the right direction.” In May, URS filed an amended proxy which says it will look to change incentives from net income to return on equity and earnings per share. More importantly, it said acquisitions would end.

If all goes right, URS could double in two years,Mirshekari says, comparing it to AECOM Technology (ACM).

Looks a lot like AECOMM, which did something similar and rallied.

Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Watch For 2018: WGL Holdings Inc(WGL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Shauna O’Brien]

Brean Capital reported on Friday that it has upgraded natural gas utility company WGL Holdings Inc (WGL).

The firm has raised its rating on WGL from “Hold” to “Buy,” and has given the company a $46 price target. This price target suggests a 12% increase from the stock’s current price of $40.62. The upgrade was primarily based on valuation and future investment opportunities.

“Like many utilities in the gas LDC space, the shares of WGL Holdings have come off recent highs and are now trading at a level we consider attractive,” analyst Michael Gaugler comments. “Beyond valuation, we consider the recent announcement of conditional approval of Dominion’s Cove Point facility for LNG export as a positive development in terms of future investment opportunities, given the company’s one-third interest in the Commonwealth Pipeline project, which we believe will be revisited due to future increased demand.”

WGL Holdings shares were mostly flat during pre-market trading Friday. The stock has been mostly flat YTD.

The stock market performed well on Tuesday, responding to steady improvement among many companies as earnings season kicked into high gear. Although political issues are likely to remain in the spotlight for some investors for the foreseeable future, many market participants are looking to economic and business issues in driving their investing decisions. Major market benchmarks finished the day with gains of 0.5% to 1%, but some stocks did much better. Among the best performers on the day were Allegheny Technologies (NYSE:ATI), II-VI (NASDAQ:IIVI), and Beazer Homes (NYSE:BZH). Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so well.

Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Watch For 2018: Peugeot S.A. (PUGOY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By John Rosevear]

It’s official: General Motors (NYSE:GM) will sell its long-troubled Opel subsidiary to French automaker Peugeot S.A. (NASDAQOTH:PUGOY) for about $2.3 billion, in a deal expected to close later this year.

  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

Now, the General is thinking about ditching Europe for good by selling its European operations to French automaker Peugeot (NASDAQOTH:PUGOY). As long as Peugeot is willing to pay a reasonable price, selling Opel is GM’s best course of action.

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

Yes, you read that correct! General Motors (NYSE: GM) will probably not settle for just a new 52-week high and will aim to take out the 2013 peak of $41.85. With talks about the Opel sellout to PSA Group (OTCPK:PEUGF) (OTCPK:PUGOY) progressing at a rate much faster than I had anticipated, a (likely) deal announcement on Monday will pave the way for new all-time highs.

Top 5 Warren Buffett Stocks To Watch For 2018

Investment Thesis

Walmart’s (WMT) stock price has surged in recent months, in part due to renewed investor optimism for its e-commerce business, proving Warren Buffett’s decision to sell in early 2017 either wrong or too early.

The company’s fundamentals, however, do not reflect the deterioration in the company’s profitability and the challenges it faces in the coming years.

For the reasons discussed in this article, I rate the stock SELL.

Stock Price Performance

Walmart (WMT) has greatly outperformed both its competitors and the major stock market averages in recent months:

WMT data by YCharts

WMT has increased 50 percent in the last year, above the negative 2% for its primary competitor Target (TGT), and 15 percent for Costco (COST), as well as the impressive 21 percent for the S&P 500 index.

Top 5 Warren Buffett Stocks To Watch For 2018: Helen of Troy Limited(HELE)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

Helen of Troy (HELE) is trading lower Friday, after reporting a mixed first quarter.

The personal care products company said it earned $1.27 a share on revenue that rose 0.8% to $347.9 million. Analysts were expecting earnings of $1.17 per share on revenue of $356.1 million. Gross profit margin increased 2.3 percentage points to 43.8%, while cash flow from operations climbed from $37.8 million in the year ago period to $41.7 million.

For the full year, Helen of Troy expects to earn between $5.85 to $6.35 a share on revenue of $1.57 billion to $1.62 billion. Analysts are modeling for earnings of $6.12 a share on revenue of $1.6 billion. However the company also warned that it expects a decline in sales for its nutritional supplement division.

Jefferies Trevor Young reiterated a Buy rating and $114 price target on the stock today:

Despite the 1Q revenue miss and ~30bps (~$4m) expected incremental FX headwinds, management maintained its FY revenue and adjusted EPS guidance (GAAP EPS came down $0.23 on the high and low end due to $6.6m of after tax non-cash asset impairment and patent litigation charges). Embedded in this guidance is the assumption of beauty coming in at the low end of the previous -7% to -12% range, and nutritional declining MSD (vs. flat to LSD positive growth previously). We believe this implies that housewares (MSD positive growth guidance previously) and health & home (LSD positive growth previously) would have to perform incrementally better than prior expectations, which we view as a positive.

The shares are down 3.3% to $99.31 in recent trading.

Hot Undervalued Stocks To Watch For 2018

Singapore’s largest property developer, CapitaLand (OTCPK:CLLDY) (CATL.SI) had a pretty good 2017. Helped by improving conditions in Singapore and China, not to mention significant project openings, CapitaLand’s local shares climbed 20% and the ADRs did even better.

Although these aren’t the easiest shares to own, and it’s not a simple company to model, I continue to believe the story and opportunity are worthwhile. CapitaLand management has shown repeatedly that they can successfully develop and manage properties and recycle capital into new value-creating projects. What’s more, the company is a good play on the rising middle class in China, and to a lesser extent, Vietnam, India, and Indonesia. With the shares still about 10% to 15% undervalued, CapitaLand looks like a reasonable option for investors who want exposure to consumer-centric real estate in China and Southeast Asia.

Bad News First – CapitaLand Is Probably Not Well-Placed In Singapore Right Now

Although CapitaLand’s management has shown above-average aptitude for understanding its markets and timing its acquisitions and divestments accordingly, the company seems to be on the wrong foot in Singapore now. Singapore’s residential market is heating up again, but CapitaLand hasn’t been acquiring land to develop new properties and the cupboard is almost bare. Given the time it takes to develop properties, CapitaLand doesn’t have a lot of good options, and I believe management would rather take its lumps and miss a cycle (particularly with more-than-worthwhile opportunities elsewhere) than buy into projects with expected returns below the company’s hurdle rate. Along similar lines, CapitaLand’s exposure to Singapore’s office market is not great and for largely the same reasons.

Hot Undervalued Stocks To Watch For 2018: Paragon Offshore plc (PGNPQ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

Paragon Offshore’s (OTCPK:PGNPQ) former management’s audacious efforts to omit parts of the senior secured lenders by deeming them unimpaired and instead pay out the majority of the company’s cash to junior unsecured bondholders by presenting a set of entirely unrealistic business forecasts to the court. Fortunately, in case of Paragon Offshore, the bankruptcy judge recognized the framing and accordingly denied confirmation of the company’s plan of reorganization, effectively sending Paragon Offshore back to the drawing board. Consequently, management was ousted after the failure. I have covered the Paragon Offshore saga in a series of articles over the past few quarters, so interested investors might want to take a look at this highly fascinating and still evolving case study.

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

With even brand new rigs struggling to find work, the jig was soon up for owners of old equipment, like Paragon Offshore (OTCPK:PGNPQ), which is currently undergoing its second debt restructuring in less than three years of independent existence. Likewise, drillers with a fondness for aggressive use of debt were soon in trouble, most notably, former high-flier Seadrill (SDRL) and its little brother North Atlantic Drilling (NADL), which will no doubt file for restructuring within months. As a consequence of the crisis, the OSD industry now has a number of participants without a large debt burden, either new entrants like Borr Drilling, or established competitors that have had debt reduced in a restructuring, such as Ocean Rig (ORIG), to be followed within this year by others, almost certainly including each of SDRL, NADL, and Pacific Drilling (PACD).

Not intimidated by the Fed’s 25-basis-point rate hike in December, Jason chose Ellie Mae (ELLI), a company with a leading cloud productthat facilitates and streamlines the mortgage originations process.

“Its primary offering, Encompass, is a cloud-based one-stop shop for mortgage originators, allowing them to manage the loan process from start to finish,” Moser says. And by streamlining the process, Ellie Mae’s Encompass “increases efficiency and loan quality, reduces documentation errors, and helps keep everyone out of regulatory trouble.”

With trailing revenues just below $250 million, Moser pegs the market opportunity as a $5 billion pie, and thinks ELLI will prove to be one of the best stocks to buy for 2016.
