Investors immediately voiced their disapproval of the deal, which along with crashing oil prices, has put significant pressure on Denbury’s stock price.

Crestwood had talked about potentially increasing its distribution this year but decided to hold it flat for 2019. That will allow it to retain more cash to finance some additional expansion projects so that it doesn’t negatively affect its financial profile. One of those projects is a $60 million investment to expand its Arrow water gathering system in the Bakken to support the growth of Enerplus (NYSE:ERF). Crestwood couldn’t pass up this opportunity since the long-term agreement with Enerplus implies an investment multiple of 4, which is higher than its average project.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Overall, Crestwood expects to invest $275 million to $325 million into expansion projects this year, slightly above its initial forecast to spend between $250 million and $300 million on capital projects. One driver of the increased budget is that oil and gas producer Enerplus (NYSE:ERF) awarded the company a contract to expand its water system in the Bakken. Crestwood expects to invest $60 million over the next two years on this project, which will help support Enerplus’ volume growth in the region. Meanwhile, the company is in advanced discussions with customers to provide a range of midstream services in the Delaware Basin, which could include building a new natural gas processing plant in the region.

The stock market was mostly higher on Monday, with market participants celebrating favorable economic news on the consumer front and looking forward to another round of positive earnings reports when third-quarter earnings season starts early next month. Tax cuts have helped corporate earnings throughout 2018, and that’s generally helped to lift the overall market. Yet even with several major market benchmarks at or near record levels, some stocks weren’t able to participate in the gains today. Brown-Forman (NYSE:BF-B), Acorda Therapeutics (NASDAQ:ACOR), and Energy XXI Gulf Coast (NASDAQ:EXXI) were among the worst performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Own Right Now: Enbridge Inc(ENB)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Shares of Enbridge (NYSE:ENB) came roaring back in January. After tumbling 20% in 2018 due in part to a late sell-off in the oil market, shares of the Canadian oil pipeline giant rebounded 17.8% last month, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. Driving that rally was a bounce back in the oil market as well as some bullish notes by analysts who follow the company.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Pembina Pipeline Corp. (NYSE:PBA) isn’t a name that most investors are probably familiar with since it’s a Canadian company. Not only that, but it’s much smaller than its more well-known national rivals Enbridge (NYSE:ENB) and TransCanada (NYSE:TRP), which have made their share of headlines in the U.S. due to some controversial pipeline projects.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

While hiring a bank to lead the sales process doesn’t mean Kinder Morgan will find buyers willing to pay its asking price, the report suggested that “interest in the assets would be robust, and bids are likely to come from both midstream companies, private equity firms, and infrastructure funds.” Recent M&A activity in the country backs up that view. For example, in April, Canadian energy infrastructure giant Enbridge (NYSE:ENB) hired advisors to explore the sale of some of its natural gas gathering and processing assets in the western part of the country. That initial report said that Enbridge hoped to sell at least a portion of that business for more than CA$2 billion ($1.5 billion). By July, Enbridge agreed to a CA$4.3 billion ($3.3 billion) bid by an infrastructure fund-led consortium for its entire gas gathering and processing business in Western Canada. It was only one of several notable deals for midstream assets in recent years, in what has been a seller’s market.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

In addition to the Trans Mountain system, two other pipeline projects currently are proposed to move crude oil from Alberta either to the Great Lakes or the Gulf Coast. Enbridge Inc. (NYSE: ENB) is proposing to replace its 50-year old Line 3 system to transport 760,000 barrels a day to Superior, Wisconsin. TransCanada Corp. (NYSE: TRP) has received approval from the Trump administration and would transport 830,000 barrels a day to Nebraska where existing pipelines will take over, sending the crude to U.S. refineries and Gulf Coast terminals.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

In addition to that, Brookfield has agreed to buy Enbridge’s (NYSE:ENB) Western Canadian natural gas gathering and processing business. The company will invest about $540 million in the acquisition, giving it a stake in the largest operation of its kind in Canada, which has it strategically positioned for expansion. Meanwhile, Enbridge will use the cash to pay down debt and fund its large slate of expansion projects.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Oil prices have improved dramatically over the past year as OPEC’s move to drain off the supply glut proved more successful than envisioned. That rising tide has lifted most oil stocks. However, that doesn’t mean investors have missed the boat, since many oil stocks still have ample upside. Two top ones where that’s the case are Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) and Enbridge (NYSE:ENB).

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Own Right Now: Petroleo Brasileiro S.A.- Petrobras(PBR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Tuesday continued to show a stock market divided, as major benchmarks that focus on large-cap stocks kept powering higher even as small-cap indexes lost more ground. The Dow Jones Industrial Average posted triple-digit gains to finish at a record, but weakness from the technology sector weighed on the Nasdaq Composite. Investors seem to believe that the resolution of some key trade disputes favors large multinationals over small domestic companies, and some foreign stocks also had good showings. Petroleo Brasileiro (NYSE:PBR), Lamb Weston Holdings (NYSE:LW), and IAMGOLD (NYSE:IAG) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

  • [By Chris Lange]

Short interest at Petroleo Brasileiro S.A. (NYSE: PBR), or Petrobras, decreased to 42.60 million shares from the previous 43.43 million. The stock traded at $10.52 a share, in a 52-week range of $9.02 to $17.20. Unfortunately, Petrobras may be trading on an entirely different set of fundamentals and sentiment due to its ongoing woes in Brazil.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Stocks fell on Thursday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average finishing modestly lower but with other major benchmarks closing nearly unchanged. Investors largely recovered from an early decline following the White House decision to cancel its scheduled meeting next month with Kim Jong Un of North Korea, instead focusing mostly on economic fundamentals that remain favorable throughout much of the world. Some individual companies, however, had to deal with adversity that sent their shares lower. Petroleo Brasileiro (NYSE:PBR), Whirlpool (NYSE:WHR), and Luxoft Holding (NYSE:LXFT) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

  • [By Chris Lange]

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In 2019

European Pressphoto Agency

An upbeat reading on U.S. retail sales isn’t enough to keep U.S. stock indices from tanking today. The Dow dropped more than 200 points in late afternoon market action.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.19% and the S&P 500 fell 1% while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.6%.

Energy and financial shares in the S&P 500 led the declines with the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) and the Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) falling 1.5% and 1.3%respectively.

Stock indices have fluctuated severely this week. The Dow posted its biggest gain since March on Tuesday, only to record its worst fall since Feb. 11 the next day. As of now, the blue chip index is poised to record its third straight weekly loss.

Investors are facing a variety of overhangs, from cloudy expectations for corporate earnings to next month’s Federal Reserve meeting and the UK is poised to vote on whether to exit the European Union.

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In 2019: Cameco Corporation(CCJ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

A steep drop in the price of uranium has punished uranium miners like industry giant Cameco Corporation (NYSE:CCJ). However, the company’s conservative approach has allowed it to weather this difficult stretch in relative stride, with its uranium contracts giving it financial leeway that many peers simply haven’t had.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

The point here is that just because a company isn’t technically in the energy sector doesn’t mean that the energy sector isn’t an important area to monitor. As another example, a supply demand imbalance in the uranium market is wreaking havoc on Cameco Corp. (NYSE:CCJ) as low commodity prices make turning a profit increasingly difficult. This is partly being driven by overproduction on the mining side of the business, but also by the demand side from utility customers. Demand for nuclear power fell off after the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster in Japan even though long-term construction trends in places like China and India suggest it will recover in the future.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

Shares of Cameco Corp. (NYSE:CCJ) are down nearly 80% from highs they reached in the mid-2000s. Falling uranium prices have been the primary reason for the decline, since this giant Canadian uranium miner is strictly focused on the nuclear fuel. At this point, there doesn’t appear to be a dramatic and imminent upturn in the uranium market’s future. However, it looks like Cameco is taking all of the right steps to get its mojo back when prices do start to turn higher. Here’s what you need to know before you buy Cameco stock.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

Being a uranium miner hasn’t been easy lately, with the spot price of the nuclear fuel hovering near 14-year lows. It’s no wonder, then, that Cameco Corp. (NYSE:CCJ), the largest publicly traded uranium miner in the world, has seen its shares fall more than 70% over the past decade. Earnings results, meanwhile, have dipped into the red over the last two years. Believe it or not, however, there’s a bright side to all this bad news. Here’s what you need to know.

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In 2019: Scana Corporation(SCG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Shane Hupp]

Teacher Retirement System of Texas cut its stake in shares of SCANA Co. (NYSE:SCG) by 8.3% in the second quarter, HoldingsChannel.com reports. The fund owned 27,484 shares of the utilities provider’s stock after selling 2,503 shares during the period. Teacher Retirement System of Texas’ holdings in SCANA were worth $1,059,000 as of its most recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

  • [By Shane Hupp]

Shares of SCANA Co. (NYSE:SCG) have received a consensus recommendation of “Hold” from the twelve research firms that are currently covering the company, Marketbeat reports. Three investment analysts have rated the stock with a sell recommendation, six have issued a hold recommendation and two have issued a buy recommendation on the company. The average 12 month target price among brokerages that have issued a report on the stock in the last year is $43.75.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Aside from checking on whether the company achieves that aim, there are two other items investors should keep an eye on in the second half of the year. First, the company continues to make progress on its proposed merger with SCANA (NYSE:SCG). Shareholders of SCANA recently voted in favor of that transaction, and Dominion has won the approval of several regulators, including the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the Federal Trade Commission, and the state of Georgia. However, the company still needs to get permission for the deal in North Carolina and South Carolina, with the latter one being a key sticking point due to SCANA’s failed nuclear plant in the state. While Dominion has offered several concessions in the deal to win over both customers and legislators, it might not be enough since the state wants an even bigger rate reduction. The company remains optimistic that it can close the deal by the end of this year, though it’s unclear if that will happen.

Top Energy Stocks For 2018

CEFC China Energy Co. may cut half of its 30,000-strong workforce as the sprawling conglomerate faces increased financial pressures and scrutiny from Beijing, said an official at one of its units.

A deal to buy 14 percent of Rosneft PJSC, however, remains viable despite being impacted by the company’s recent troubles, Zhuang Jianzhong, vice director of CEFC’s international research unit, said Wednesday on the sidelines of an energy conference in Shanghai.

CEFC’s rapid rise peaked last year when it agreed to purchase a $9 billion stake in Rosneft, the culmination of Chairman Ye Jianming’s efforts to align his business with the overseas political and economic goals of President Xi Jinping. But things began to unravel this year as Ye, who has stepped down from management, came under investigation by Chinese authorities and financial troubles emerged.

Action To Take: Going forward, huge, integrated oil companies like Chevron (NYSE: CVX) and ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) will need to figure out how to evolve in an environment where the price of their primary product remains flat, perhaps for decades. This will translate into flat profits and, perhaps, skinnier dividends. Currently, both stocks trade at 20-plus forward price-to-earnings ratios (PEs), much higher than their attractive historical norms. While the market has bid up these stocks, the higher multiples indicate lower-than-anticipated earnings per share (EPS).

Three stocks we really like right now are DistributionNOW(NYSE:DNOW),Phillips 66(NYSE:PSX), andConocoPhillips(NYSE:COP), which all should do well in the current oil market.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch For 2018

According to a report by Bloomberg, Saudi Arabia wants to push the price of crude up from its current level of $65-$70to near $80 a barrel. The Middle Eastern nation needs that price to boost the valuation of its national oil company, Saudi Aramco, which it plans to take public next year. Hitting its desired sell price would provide the Kingdom with the funds needed to jump-start an investment strategy that would wean its economy off petrol dollars over the next decade.

Saudi Aramco’s valuation, however, isn’t the only one that would benefit from a pop in the price of crude. Many oil producers in the U.S. restructured their operations to run on $50 oil, so if the Saudi strategy is successful, these oil companies would produce a gusher of cash flow, which could fuel high-octane gains for investors. While that rise would likely lift the entire sector, Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) and Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO)could outperform in that scenario.

Friday was a strong day on Wall Street, as major benchmarks finished higher by 1% to 2%. Market participants focused their attention on the April jobs report, which included a drop in the unemployment rate to 3.9%, its lowest level in more than 17 years. Nonfarm payroll gains of 164,000 weren’t extremely strong, and some saw wage growth of just 2.6% as bad news for workers. Yet from many investors’ perspective, weak wage growth is actually a positive, as it indicates a lack of inflationary pressure that’s good for most stocks. Good news regarding several key individual companies also helped stoke favorable sentiment. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Kraft Heinz (NASDAQ:KHC), and California Resources (NYSE:CRC) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

Large Caps. Our E&P coverage is pricing in $61/bbl WTI and $3.30 gas, and with a lower crude forecast the group is looking less compelling. We argue names that continue to demonstrate resource improvement at the low-end of the cost curve, namely in the Permian and STACK remain attractive, such as Concho Resources (CXO), Devon Energy (DVN), Newfield Exploration (NFX) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD). Noble (NBL) remains a compelling value, though has yet to commit to an accelerated US onshore drilling program.

Lear also sees strong “upside potential” forConcho Resources (CXO), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) and Newfield Exploration (NFX) as well performance improves in the Permian/STACK, and also writes positively on Devon Energy (DVN).

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Rising acreage prices are causing Permian peers concern that the market is getting too hot. For example, Concho Resources (NYSE:CXO) recently said that it was having difficulty finding a good value in Permian land deals. That’s saying a lot for a company that completed several deals over the past year, including paying $1.625 billion for 40,000 net acres last August, or more than $40,000 per acre. However, with recent deals in the mid-$40,000s per acre, and up to as high as $58,500 per acre, buyers like Concho are growing cautious, which suggests land values might be topping out.

Brent Lewin/Bloomberg via Getty Images Coffee chain Starbucks has asked U.S. customers to leave their guns at home after being dragged into an increasingly fractious debate over U.S. gun rights in the wake of multiple mass shootings. While many U.S. restaurant chains and retailers don’t allow firearms on their properties, Starbucks’ policy had been to default to local gun laws, including “open carry” regulations in many U.S. states that allow people to bring guns into stores. In August, this led gun-rights advocates to hold a national “Starbucks Appreciation Day” to thank the firm for its stance, pulling the company deeper into the fierce political fight. Locations for Starbucks Appreciation Day events included Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and six adults were shot dead in an elementary school in December. Starbucks (SBUX) closed that shop before the event was scheduled to begin. Chief executive Howard Schultz said in an open letter to customers late Tuesday that Starbucks Appreciation Day events “disingenuously portray Starbucks as a champion of ‘open carry.’ To be clear: we do not want these events in our stores.” The coffee chain didn’t, however, issue an outright ban on guns in its nearly 7,000 company-owned cafes, saying this would potentially require staff to confront armed customers. The Seattle-based company hoped to give “responsible gun owners a chance to respect its request,” Schultz said. The CEO told Reuters the policy change wasn’t the result of the Newtown Starbucks Appreciation Day event, which prompted the Newtown Action Alliance to call on the company to ban guns at all of its U.S. stores. Nor was it in response to the mass shootings this week at the Washington Navy Yard. “We’ve seen the ‘open carry’ debate become increasingly uncivil and, in some cases, even threatening,” Schultz wrote, noting that “some anti-gun activists have also played a role in ratcheting up the rhetoric and friction,” at times soliciting and confronting empl

Credit Suisse analystSeth Sigman and team see slowing growth for Home Depot (HD) and Lowe’s (LOW) when they release their earnings but also believe that should remain a bright spot in retail:

    Michael Nagle/Bloomberg News

We see limited/less upside for HD and LOW in Q2relative to prior quarters, and expect sequentially lower growth, as iswell documented by now. But, we expect Q2 results to outshine whatseems to be a weakening broader retail landscape, and we believeresults improved throughout the quarter as data today confirmed.Further, these stocks have underperformed the market by ~300 bpssince reporting Q1. As such, if one wants retail exposure, HD/LOWshould remain a good place to be.

Shares of Home Depot have fallen 0.6% to $136.16 at 2:14 p.m. today, while Lowe’s has dipped 0.1% to $81.53.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Credit Suisse analysts Seth Sigman and Kieran McGrath argue that both Home Depot (HD) and Lowe’s (LOW) will beat first -quarter earnings forecasts, but Home Depot is a “better way to play” earnings. They explain why:

    Michael Nagle/Bloomberg News

Home Depot/Lowe’s are positioned to deliver upside to Q1 expectations. With that relatively well known, our incremental analysis revisits the differences in housing trends and demand drivers inHome Depot vs.Lowe’s markets down to the store-level, helping explain the recent comps gap, as well as assess the sales and margin upside or recoverability inLowe’s case, as that remains a key consideration for investors and valuation.

The call: We believeHome Depot is the better way to play Q1 (even as these stocks move together on a longer term basis), as its markets have still outperformed Lowe’s, and its Pro oriented categories likely benefited more from weather. For Lowe’s, based on its market differences and more challenging seasonal trends in April, we assume the gap remains wide and similar to 4Q15. That said, our analysis supports thatLowe’s has opportunities to narrow the gap as the year goes on. And its EPS outlook on its own supports upside to its stock.

Shares of Home Depot have gained 0.5% to $136.37 at 3:25 p.m. today, while Lowe’s has risen 0.6% to $75.98.

We wondered if Advance Auto Parts (AAP) just had a bad quarter or something more serious, whether there was beauty in being boring for Home Depot (HD), and just how risky Ford Motors’ (F) autonomous driving plan might be.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Home Depot (HD) is enjoying some strong performance in 2013. Shares of the world’s largest home improvement retailer have rallied more than 22% since the calendar flipped over to January, besting the broad market’s impressive climb higher over the same period. More recently, HD has been tracking sideways, but that doesn’t mean that the upside is over in this home improvement stock. Here’s how to trade it.

HD is currently forming a rectangle pattern, a setup that’s formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares at $80 and horizontal support below shares at $72. The setup gets its name because those two lines effectively “box in” shares of Home Depot right now. That makes it an “if/then trade.”

An if/then trade is a contingent trade that doesn’t have directional bias — in other words, the ultimate direction of the trade is determined by the direction that HD breaks out of its channel. So, if HD breaks above resistance at $80, then it’s time to buy shares. If they slide below $72 support, then it’s time to short. There’s no trade until one of those conditions is met.
