Hot Small Cap Stocks To Own Right Now

Today, our Under the Radar Movers newsletter suggested shorting small cap California Central Coast based bank holding stock Heritage Oaks Bancorp (NASDAQ: HEOP):

“The chart of Heritage Oaks Bancorp speaks for itself. After a 68% runup in just two months, HEOP shares are starting to feel the weight of that big gain. Today it started to pay the price, logging a bar — a loss — that suggests the stock has moved past the point of no return. After reaching a multi-year high today, the sellers took a decisive swing in the other direction to form a bearish outside-day… and there’s plenty of room for Heritage Oaks Bancorp to edge lower. There are a few potential support levels peppered all between where it is now and the mid-$8’s, but there’s no assurance any of those moving average lines will actually serve as floors.”

Deutsche Bank (NYSE:DB), this is their U.S. division, was the only one that had their capital plan outright rejected, meaning that they have to come back and resubmit it within a few months. The two big investment banks — Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) and Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) — were conditionally approved. I wrote an article on this, you guys can read it if you’d like to. • [By Matthew Frankel, CFP®]

And to be clear, this quote doesn’t just apply when the entire market is greedy or fearful. As a personal example, one data center real estate investment trust posted some troubling results, so investors became fearful of all data center REITs, driving down prices. In the midst of the selling, I decided to pick up some more shares of Digital Realty Trust (NYSE: DLR), one of my favorite stocks. Since I bought them earlier this year, the market seems to have acknowledged the fears were overblown, and shares are up by more than 20% since then.

  • [By Motley Fool Staff]

When you think “tech stocks,” you generally don’t think about real estate investment trusts, or REITs, but Digital Realty Trust (NYSE:DLR) certainly fits into both categories. The data center REIT’s growth story could just be getting started if we continue to become more and more connected as a society.

  • [By Motley Fool Staff]

Matt Frankel: Out of the 18 that were subject to having their capital plans reviewed, 15 got the green light. There were a few that were not doing so well. The big effect of this is that Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley can’t increase their capital spending this year on dividends and buybacks.

During his talk, Trump praised the U.S. economy and defended his administration’s actions this year on trade. Trump said that the United States will no longer endure “abuse” from other trade partners. The U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer also said Tuesday that the U.S. is prepared to proceed on a new trade deal with Mexico without the participation of Canada. Oil prices are in focus after President Trump called out OPEC members before the U.N. on Tuesday. During his talk, Trump accused OPEC and non-OPEC participants in collusion efforts on production and prices of ripping off the rest of the world.

AMAT data by YCharts

Comments from Micron Technology’s chief financial officer indicating continued declines for NAND memory prices and a bearish note on the outlook for the memory-chip industry from Morgan Stanley analyst Shawn Kim resulted in steep sell-offs for Applied Materials and other related semiconductor companies on Sept. 6. The iShares Philadelphia Semiconductor ETF closed the month down 2.8%.

So what

Applied Materials’ semiconductor systems segment accounted for 61% of the company’s sales in its July quarter, and combined flash and DRAM memory business accounted for 60% of that revenue. The company has benefited from strong demand for memory chips over the last several years, with its earnings and stock price hitting record highs earlier this year; a downturn for the memory chip market is likely to have a significant, negative impact on performance.

Top Financial Stocks To Buy Right Now

With year-to-date returns of nearly 20%, Mr. Market has been kind to MakeMyTrip (MMYT) this year. On the financial side, the topline is up but it has been fuelled by a discounting frenzy. A 98% increase in net revenues was accompanied by a 146% increase in marketing costs last quarter. In addition, the firm continues to push its profitability timeline beyond FY2020. I have been a long-term bull on this stock, but now, I think a correction is due.

Round-tripping could inflate topline

I understand that discounting is the name of the game. As the $16 billion exit provided to Flipkart’s shareholders shows, discounting to gain market share can lead to some favorable exits. But in the context of this particular business in India, OTAs could be easily gamed in their exercise to gain market share. To understand the game, we need to understand the term – round-tripping.

What is round-tripping?

Imagine that a room in Hotel XYZ is listed on MMT. For the sake of simplicity assume that the price of the room is $100 and MMT offers a 25% discount on its platform. The owner of XYZ could buy off the inventory at $75 and then sell it offline for a price of $100. Even if MMT charges a commission of 30% for the sale, XYZ would end up selling a room at a much higher price. Obviously, this is a very simplistic example. There are more variables on how this could work, such as the percentage of XYZ inventory listed on MMT and the number of offline customers not registered on MMT. It is hard to second-guess these variables. And considering that creating an account on MMT is like taking candy from kids, Hoteliers can easily create a new account without the knowledge of OTAs.

Top Heal Care Stocks To Own For 2019

What happened

Shares of dry bulk ocean shipper Diana Shipping (NYSE:DSX) surged 37% in the first month of the new year, rising from $3.02 at the start of January to end at $4.14 at its close. As the calendar moves into February, however, Diana’s shares are moving into reverse — down more than 2% since the month began.

So what

Why this is happening is not immediately clear, although there was a lot happening elsewhere in the shipping sector last month — everything from a buyout offer for tanker company DHT Holdings (NYSE:DHT) to a convoluted restructuring ongoing at DryShips (NASDAQ:DRYS). Meanwhile at Diana, the main news has been of multiple new time charter contracts for its vessels being signed last month, alongside the extension of multiple other existing contracts — signings that have continued into February. Clearly, Diana doesn’t seem to be having trouble finding customers. On the other hand, the rates the company is getting on its charters may not be the best.

That’sreally the investment opportunity, how is internet going to be delivered going forward.

It’s been just over a month since T-Mobile (NASDAQ:TMUS) and Sprint(NYSE:S) announced their blockbuster $26 billion merger, which was immediatelymet with investor skepticism. The proposed deal has massive implications for the competitive landscape for cellular service, particularly at the national level. Of course, antitrust regulators would primarily be concerned about the effect that reduced competition may have on the prices that consumers pay for their monthly cellphone bills.

Davos has a new star.

Xi Jinping is set to become the first Chinese president to attend the World Economic Forum’s annual gathering high in the mountains of Switzerland.

It’s a visit rich in symbolism: Beijing is positioning itself as a global leader at a time when Western powers, and especially the United States, are retreating from the world stage.

The Davos meeting coincides with the formal handover of power in the U.S. Donald Trump will be inaugurated as president on Jan. 20, the final day of the forum.

Into this breach steps Xi, who has an iron grip on the levers of power in Beijing. Under his leadership, China has adopted a more muscular foreign policy, and sought to expand its influence through trade initiatives.

China’s political heavyweights avoided Davos in 2016. One of the few officials who went, financial regulator Fang Xinghai, spent much of his time defending Beijing’s botched response to a stock market crash.

No one in modern financial history comes close to matching Warren Buffett’s record as an investor.

Hedge fund managers like John Paulson and Kenneth Griffin have had huge years along the way, and more conventional money managers such as Peter Lynch have turned in stellar performances as well, but none has performed at such a high level over such a long period of time as the Oracle of Omaha.

When Buffett took control ofBerkshire Hathaway(NYSE: BRK-A)(NYSE: BRK-B) in 1965, it was an ailing textile company with a bleak future. Today, thanks to Buffett’s brilliance at capital allocation, Berkshire is the fourth-biggest company in the S&P 500as measured by market capitalization.

The compound annual increase in Berkshire’s book value per share has averaged 19% since Buffett grabbed the reins. That’s nearly double the compound annual gain of the S&P 500, which comes out to 9.7% over the same 52-year stretch.

Right now, the 10-year interest rate is sitting on the border of 3%. And this news has many investors jittery about the impact on the stock market and the broader economy. And inflation targets remain stubbornly elusive for members of the U.S. Federal Reserve. The truth is that investors have little to worry about regarding interest rates. Instead, they should listen to Money Morning Chief Investment Strategist Keith Fitz-Gerald, who offered his insight to Fox Business Network earlier this week. Here’s what Keith had to say.

In late March 2018, the company delivered an update to the markets outlining the current status of the capital raise effort, which only suggested that various conversations were being had but provided no firm deliverables on the closing of the capital raise. It is my opinion that the company will close the bond issuances, which is the final component of its capital raise efforts. I strongly believe that the company will close on the upper-end of $350 million in the bond issuance based on its ability to:

FAANG stocks are attempting to rebound today after a brutal sell-off hit the Nasdaq components Tuesday. The social media giant Facebook Inc. (Nasdaq: FB) will report earnings after the bell, but it’s likely that analysts are more interested in the company’s ongoing response to a data scandal that rocked investor sentiment and spurred privacy fears during the first quarter. Wall Street forecasts EPS of $1.36 on top of $11.45 billion in revenue.
Right now, the 10-year interest rate is sitting on the border of 3%. And this news has many investors jittery about the impact on the stock market and the broader economy. Of course, many people forget that interest rates remain historically low for this stage of an economic expansion.

Warren Buffett, chairman and chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Photographer: Daniel Acker/Bloomberg

The world’s best investor, Warren Buffett, has a knack for celebrating Independence Day in style.

Two years ago, Buffett enjoyed the Fourth of July with an extra serving of ketchup, hot dogs and lemonade when Heinz completed its $40 billion takeover of Kraft Foods, creating food and condiments powerhouse Kraft Heinz. This year, the summer holiday is again coinciding with the culmination of a major winning Berkshire Hathaway deal. On Friday, Buffett decided to exercise Berkshire’s 700 million in warrants to buy Bank of America common shares, realizing his most profitable financial sector investment of the crisis era.

In the summer of 2011, Berkshire Hathaway invested $5 billion in Bank of America through preferred stock, helping the then-ailing mega lender raise capital to bolster its balance sheet. At the time, Bank of America shares were reeling due to seemingly unending legal woes stemming from the crisis and its catastrophic acquisition of Countrywide Financial. Other issues, such as a cascading sovereign debt crisis in Europe and fears over a debt default in the United States due to partisan rancor, were largely out of the firm’s control.

Top Financial Stocks To Buy Right Now: Wells Fargo & Company(WFC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew Frankel]

Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) has had an eventful couple of years, and not in a good way. The bank’s public perception has been rocked by three major scandals, including the infamous fake-accounts scandal, which has not only resulted in sub-par business performance, but has resulted in a string of penalties, fines, and consumer refunds as well.

The US financial sector has been on a solid run of late. Over the last 12 months the S&P 500 Financials Sector has returned 18.9% relative to the S&P 500 Index of 17.9%. Many analysts have formed the view that with the potential for higher market interest rates, this sector has a long runway ahead. So with this in mind I thought that it would be a good time to update my estimates of the intrinsic value of the 3 major diversified banks. Over a series of 4 articles I will value JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM), Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC) and Bank of America (NYSE: BAC). In this first article I will set the scene by reviewing the performance of the 3 banks over the last 10 years and compare their current performance to the Sector.

He practices what he preaches. While Berkshire Hathaway has ownership interests in about 45 companies, the lion’s share of the portfolio (nearly two-thirds) is invested in just six names. The biggest is Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), followed by Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC), Kraft Heinz (Nasdaq: KHC), Bank of America (NYSE: BAC), Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO), and American Express (NYSE: AXP).Buffett isn’t afraid to make colossal investments in a small handful of positions. And with few exceptions, these big bets usually work out brilliantly. Of course, we’re also talking about the most astute stock picker of all time. For those without his legendary skills, this strategy might be far less productive — possibly even dangerous.

San Francisco-based Wells Fargo & Co. In Tuesday’s Kass Insider I remarked that there are a number of factors contributing to my cautious near-term market view:

Narrow Market Leadership. We’re back to a market that’s basically led by the FAANGs — Facebook (FB) , Amazon (AMZN) , Apple (AAPL) , Netflix (NFLX) and Google/Alphabet (GOOG) , (GOOGL) . Facebook, Amazon, Apple and Alphabet are holdings in Jim Cramer’s Action Alerts PLUS. Rising Short-Term Interest Rates. The 2-year U.S. note yield is up about 1.3 basis points at 2.39%. Complacency. I’m seeing more investor complacency — anecdotally, in the business media and elsewhere — ever since market’s main indices rallied off of their recent lows. Gold. The rise in gold looks solid. I’m currently long the SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) . Lackluster Banks. We’re seeing disappointing action in the financials. However, I continue to buy them. I’m long Bank of America (BAC) , Citigroup (C) , JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Wells Fargo (WFC) , although I’m shorting Goldman Sachs (GS) .

Frankel:Yeah. Buffett said in his letterthis year, about three months ago, thatshareholders shouldn’t pay much attention to Berkshire’searnings going forward. Basically, there’s an accounting change now that requireswhat they call unrealized gains on investments, meaning stocks they haven’t sold yet,to be included in earnings figures. Asmost listeners know, the stock market did not have a great first quarter to 2018. This wasespecially true for some of Buffett’s stocks.Wells Fargo(NYSE:WFC) had a particularly bad time.Coca-Cola, Kraft Heinz are all doing pretty poorly. This made Berkshire look like they lostover $1 billion, when in reality, theiroperating earnings, which is the earnings that are actually being generated by itsbusinesses, grewto a record high level, up almost 50% year over year. It wasactually about a $5 billion profit, and thechange in value of the company’sstock portfoliomade it look like a loss.
