The stock market finished Wednesday on a quiet note, with various major benchmarks moving in different directions. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down about 90 points on weakness in some major industrial and insurance company names, but the Nasdaq Composite posted a similar-sized percentage gain. For some individual companies, though, bad news pushed shares lower. CenturyLink (NYSE:CTL), Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:SMCI), and Lear (NYSE:LEA) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

Rotonti: Cognizant (NASDAQ:CTSH) recently named a new CEO. Does this change your investment thesis in the company?

Allen: No. Cognizant’s consulting and outsourcing model is benefiting from the increasing importance of technology spending and the scarcity of skilled tech labor, which should allow the company to generate high-single-digit revenue growth for many years. Francisco D’Souza has been the CEO since 2007 and was a co-founder of the company in 1994. After a successful tenure, he’s ready to retire and we wish him all the best. The board conducted a thorough search process and selected Brian Humphries from Vodafone Business, who will bring a fresh perspective to the company.

Most market participants focused the bulk of their attention on deteriorating financial conditions in Turkey, with signs that the plunge in the value of the nation’s currency could have impacts across the globe. For instance, Argentina had to boost a key interest rate by 5 percentage points to 45% in order to defend its own currency, and in the U.S., financial stocks were generally under some pressure as investors tried to assess possible exposure if the Turkish crisis extends outward. Even with those difficulties, some companies had good news that sent their shares higher. Nielsen Holdings (NYSE:NLSN), Diebold Nixdorf (NYSE:DBD), and Antares Pharma (NASDAQ:ATRS) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

A big change to China’s constitution could have major consequences for the world’s second largest economy.

China’s rubber stamp parliament is expected Sunday to amend the constitution to remove the limit on the number of terms the president can serve. That means President Xi Jinping could rule for life.

Political experts say the move means China is becoming more authoritarian. Some economists are worried, too.

“Concentrating power in fewer hands is risky,” said Julian Evans-Pritchard, a China economist at Capital Economics. He says other top officials will be less likely to push back against a more powerful Xi, even if the president’s plans could harm the economy.

If that happens, “the quality of policy making will suffer,” Evans-Pritchard added.

The stakes are high. China’s economy needs big reforms, particularly to address its soaring corporate debt.

Debt worries

China’s total debt has increased rapidly since the global financial crisis. By the middle of last year, it was more than two and a half times the value of the entire Chinese economy, according to the Bank of International Settlements.

Bull markets are wonderful…   You get to watch your stocks rise in value, of course.   But bull markets – especially the current one – come with another major benefit.   Most folks overlook it because they don't want to buy assets that are underperforming stocks. And even fewer are ready to buy assets that are likely to lose money as the bull market continues.   And that's a wonderful thing… because it means "portfolio insurance" is dirt-cheap right now. By some measures, it's nearly as cheap as ever before.   Today, I'll explain how it works – and why you should strongly consider it now, while it's cheap. I'll also point you to the best place to go for advice on how and what to buy.   This wealth-protection strategy is buying long-dated put options. The idea is simple…

5 Defense Stocks to Tap US-North Korea Denuclearization Row

On May 16, North Korea canceled a meeting with its southern counterpart and even threatened to cancel a planned meeting with President Donald Trump. In fact, North Korea’s vice-foreign minister Kim Kye-gwan said that the United States together with South Korea harbor sinister intentions toward Pyongyang. North Korea’s latest move raised a new set of geo-political concerns.

5 Defense Stocks to Tap US-North Korea Denuclearization Row

Additionally, Trump’s National Security Advisor John Bolton’s latest statement also grabbed investor attention. In this context, defense stocks seem to be a lucrative investment choice.

North Korea to Cancel Jun 12 Meeting

North Korea’s vice-foreign minister Kim Kye-gwan said on May 16 that if the United States was “genuinely committed” to move toward a better relationship with North Korea, it should have given encouraging response.

This came after in an interview on Apr 29, Trump’s National Security Advisor John Bolton said that the United States will go with the “Libya model” for North Korea.

Clearly, during 2003-04, the denuclearization program in Libya ended with Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s death. Citing U.S.’s Libya model, Kye-gwan said that following Bolton’s statement, North Korea is no mood to negotiate with the former, when the Trump administration is focused on all “about driving North Korea into a corner.”

Kye-gwan also slammed the United States for “making a one-sided demand” and now thinking whether to “accept the North Korea-U.S. summit meeting” or not.

Bolton Raises Questions, South Korea to Mediate

On May 16, in an interview, Security Advisor Bolton said that he found “nothing new” in North Korea’s statement and wondered whether North Korea is at all taking the U.S. “objective of denuclearization seriously.”

Bolton added that in case the Kim Jong-un administration refuses to agree with the United States’ denuclearization program in Singapore, the meeting will be “pretty short.” He even called North Korea’s decision to cancel the meeting with its southern counterpart “discouraging.”

After North Korea’s warning to skip the Singapore meeting, the South Korean government has wished to act as “a mediator” between South Korea, North Korea, and the U.S. However, South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha agreed that North Korea and the U.S. have different opinions “on methods to accomplish denuclearisation.”

Will You Make a Fortune on the Shift to Electric Cars?

Here’s another stock idea to consider. Much like petroleum 150 years ago, lithium power may soon shake the world, creating millionaires and reshaping geo-politics. Soon electric vehicles (EVs) may be cheaper than gas guzzlers. Some are already reaching 265 miles on a single charge.

With battery prices plummeting and charging stations set to multiply, one company stands out as the #1 stock to buy according to Zacks research.

It’s not the one you think.

Then there’s Children’s Place (PLCE) , which soared 18.2% in a single day, as the company proved it was able to break free of the mall malaise.

Cramer also called out H&R Block (HRB) , a company even he was skeptical of, but also one that rose — up 14.8% on strong earnings.

With the Federal Reserve eyeing four possible rate hikes, Cramer said is not the time to give up on the banks, which is why he owns Citigroup (C) for Action Alerts PLUS. Cramer said he wouldn’t give up on Dow Chemical (DOW) , Arconic (ARNC) or the oil stocks either, as oil will be resuming its climb after this brief pause. He recommended EOG Resources (EOG) as a favorite in that group.

Top 5 Bank Stocks To Buy For 2018: Haier Electronics Group Co., Ltd. (HRELF)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

The main business units of the Hong Leong Asia are the Diesel Engines Unit – China Yuchai , the Consumer Products Unit – Henan Xinfei (now marketed as “Frestec”), and the Building Materials Unit – BMU. The other business units in the company are the Industrial Packaging Unit – Rex and the Air-conditioning Systems Unit – Airwell. As the majority of the business units namely Yuchai, Xinfei and Airwell, operate in China (more than 80% of total revenue), the continual slowdown of the economic growth in China coupled with increasing competition has adversely affected both the revenue and the profitability. Particularly for the consumer products unit, its small scale has severely impacted its competitiveness given aggressive larger players like Haier (OTCPK:HRELF), Midea, Feilong Electric, and Hefei Meiling.

    2. Appliance Sale – This is another operating segment that the company did not consider core to its business, so management sold the segment to Haier (OTCPK:HRELF) for over $5b. The benefit: Additional capital can be allocated to the core operational areas.
