Top 5 Undervalued Stocks To Own Right Now

We all know financial stocks have gone through the roof since President Trump’s win. So the question becomes: what do we do with these companies now?

There’s no one answer for every financial stock, of course.

Some are still great, undervalued buys—but there are two that have gotten grossly overvalued and should be avoided, or sold if you hold them. (Below, I’ll reveal 3 better high-yield stocks to buy instead.)

These 2 Financials Are Headed for Trouble

Bank of America Corp (BAC) is the first bank on my hit list.

A Breathtaking Rise

After spending most of 2016 in the red, BAC has soared more than 37% in three months. Nothing much has changed at the bank; it’s just riding a wave of euphoria as investors bet that Trump’s America will mean higher interest rates and fewer regulations, driving up BAC’s earnings.

Top 5 Undervalued Stocks To Own Right Now: Ballard Power Systems, Inc.(BLDP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Scott Levine]

Shares of Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP), a global leader in fuel cell solutions, climbed 16% in August, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. In addition to the late-August announcement of a major deal with Weichai Power, a leading automotive manufacturer located in China, shareholders celebrated the news that Zhongshan Broad-Ocean Motor Co., Ltd. is increasing its investment in the company. Between the two deals, Ballard will receive an influx of cash totaling more than $180 million.

Fuel cell stocks tend to be more volatile than the average equity, owing at least in part to the ever-changing business models of the industry. But even that makes it difficult to explain the wild ride Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP) shareholders have been on in the last year.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The stock market came out of Labor Day weekend on a sluggish note, but it recovered ground by the end of the session to finish close to where it had started. Lingering doubts about the status of trade discussions with key trading partners initially caused major benchmarks to fall around half a percent in the morning. Once again, though, stocks proved their resiliency, and investors seemed more comfortable with the idea that corporate earnings would remain strong at least through the end of the year. Moreover, some strong showings from key stocks helped lift sentiment. Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD), Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP), and El Pollo Loco Holdings (NASDAQ:LOCO) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

Top 5 Warren Buffett Stocks For 2019

Michael A. Robinson

“Look at market fluctuations as your friend rather than your enemy; profit from folly rather than participate in it.”

– Warren Buffett

It’s tough to argue with the”Oracle of Omaha.”

AndWarren Buffettis right: Investor “folly” creates some of the biggest money-making opportunities you’ll find in stocks.

Just look at the go-nowhere market we’ve been seeing in recent weeks. Stocks may plummet one day only to soar the next – all because of the bearish or bullish economic statisticdu jour– but they’ve stayed in a very tight range for close to eight weeks.

When we reach the end of this year, I believe that the tech investors who stayed in the market – and selected the best stocks, with my help – will see that they’ve been rewarded for their courage. Those who spent 2016 on the sidelines will be penalized for their caution.

At first, the gifts seemed innocent enough: a free dinner and a private helicopter tour over the Grand Canyon. By the end of it, though, the Polish official was standing in a Warsaw parking lot, accepting $100,000 in bags of cash, given to him in exchange for multi-million-dollar government contracts.

You might be thinking that this government employee was being paid off by the mafia or some shadowy military contractor, but think again: According to the SEC and Polish prosecutors, the official was allegedly bribed by white-collar executives within Hewlett Packard (NYSE:HPQ) and IBM (NYSE:IBM), the American blue chip technology firms.

In 2014, the SEC charged HP with violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act in Poland. At the time, the agency explained HP executives “provided gifts and cash bribes worth more than $600,000 to a Polish government official to obtain contracts with the national police agency.”

They won’t be so rich anymore.” PBMs, which buy drugs from drug makers and sell them to pharmacies, are often known as middlemen.

There are other signs that the Trump administration plans to hit the PBMs hard. Specifically, the drug price reduction plan released by the White House states that the Department of Health and Human Services, or HHS, will consider “requiring (PBMs) to act in the best interest of patients.”

The blueprint notes that the president has already proposed “requiring (Medicare Part D) plans to share a minimum portion of drug rebates with patients.”

By requiring PBMs “to act in the best interests of patients,” the administration would end PBMs’ frequent practice of choosing to include drugs that are more expensive but not more effective than competing products in their drug plans. And by taking that step, the administration would significantly cut the profits of PBMs, which usually receive a certain percentage of the cost of drugs.

Similarly, PBMs primarily make money by keeping for themselves a portion of the rebates they negotiate with drug makers. Requiring Medicare to share part of those rebates with patients would most likely cut into the revenue and profits of PBMs, causing PBM stocks to drop.

Moreover, senior Trump administration officials have harshly criticized PBMs. The FDA commissioner, Dr. Scott Gottlieb, accused PBMs of teaming up with insurers and pharmacies to block biosimilars, which are similar but usually cheaper versions of medicine that are derived from living organisms.

Dr. Gottlieb also called the revenue that PBMs receive from drug companies “kickbacks” that incentivize the PBMs to provide more expensive drugs to pharmacies and patients.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar has also taken very tough shots against the PBMs, although his statements on them have been more mixed than those of Dr. Gottlieb.

Compare Brokers

Recently, Azar said he would force PBMs to abandon their current business model in which they effectively obtain a percentage of the cost of drugs. Azar said he would prevent the PBMs from making any money at all from drug companies and look to force them to get all their money from insurers and employers.

It seems highly likely that forcing the PBMs to stop linking their revenue to very expensive drugs would significantly dent their top and bottom lines, causing PBMs stocks to drop sharply in the process.

On a positive note for PBMs and PBM stocks, Azar did previously say that he wanted them to be able to negotiate drug prices on behalf of Medicare.

Bottom Line on PBM Stocks

Still, taken together, all of the negative comments about PBMs by Trump, Gottlieb and Azar show that the administration plans to take action against the PBMs that will greatly harm their business models and hurt PBM stocks.

Although the forward price-to-earnings ratios of CVS stock and Express Scripts stock are both below 10, the stocks are still too expensive considering that their main business models look poised to get decimated. Consequently, investors should sell both CVS stock and Express Scripts stock immediately.

The Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged Wednesday but acknowledged that inflation is beginning to creep higher.

In a widely expected move, the central bank’s Federal Open Market Committee held the funds rate at a target of 1.5 percent to 1.75 percent.

However, there were several tweaks to the post-meeting statement that market participants likely will find instructive. Markets that already were anticipating that the Fed would move to a more aggressive posture this year got more to chew on.

Perhaps most significantly, the committee noted that “overall inflation and inflation for items other than food and energy have moved close to 2 percent.” That was an upgrade from the March meeting in which the FOMC said the indicators “have continued to run below 2 percent.”

3 Top Stocks With High Dividend Yields

Dividend paying stocks historically outperform non-dividend paying stocks, but that doesn’t mean that all dividend paying companies are created equal. Some businesses are better than others, and the best businesses offer the greatest opportunity for future dividend increases. If you’re hunting for top dividend stocks that offer more than just a high yield, it could be time to consider buyingCVS Health (NYSE:CVS), Welltower (NYSE:WELL), and STORE Capital (NYSE:STOR).

A healthy dividend is everything

Rich Smith (CVS Health Corporation): With $186 billion in annual sales, CVS Health is the nation’s biggest pharmacy chain by a wide margin. (For comparison, No. 2 druggist Walgreens Boots Alliance has sales of only $124 billion). This fact alone probably suffices to slot CVS into the definition of a “top stock.”

A man in a shirt and tie sits with legs crossed in a yoga pose as money falls down around him.

Regarding its dividend yield, CVS stock yields 3.2%, which is a dividend 60% higher than most stocks on the S&P 500, where dividend yields average only 2%. And with a dividend payout ratio of only 31%, CVS can easily afford to pay this dividend — and potentially, to raise it.

But would you believe CVS stock is also bargain-priced? It’s true. Valued at just 9.8 times trailing earnings, analysts surveyed by S&P Global Market Intelligence estimate that CVS is going to grow its earnings at about 10% annually over the next five years. On the one hand, that’s further evidence that CVS has the wherewithal with which to grow its dividend yield over time. At the same time, paying 9.8 times earnings for a 10% growth rate means that investors in CVS today are buying the stock for a PEG ratio of less than 1.0 — the very definition of a bargain in stock investing.

Health is wealth

Neha Chamaria (Welltower): My colleague Rich pointed you to a healthcare stock that not only offers strong yields but is also a value buy. Here’s another contender for you to consider: healthcare real estate investment trust (REIT) Welltower.

Rising interest rates and fears of an oversupply in the senior housing market have put considerable pressure on Welltower shares of late. These concerns, however, could be short-lived as an aging population should drive healthcare spending in coming years. While senior housing forms the bulk of Welltower’s business, it also owns post-acute rehabilitation centers and outpatient medical properties, thereby covering a wide area of healthcare. As of last quarter, Welltower owned 1,366healthcare properties.

Welltower has been exceptionally busy in the past year or so, restructuring its portfolio to divest low-return assets and use the proceeds to extend relationships with key existing partners, expand reach in important markets, and deleverage. Welltower expects to take a hit of 5% to its funds from operation (FFO) at the midpoint in fiscal 2018, but that doesn’t include potential incremental addition from acquisitions. Welltower has a strong history of FFO and dividend growth.

For income investors, the recent weakness in Welltower’s stock offers up a great opportunity. Simply take home a hefty 6.6% yield today and reinvest the dividends to earn strong returns in the long run.

Ramp up you income with this REIT

Todd Campbell (STORE Capital): STORE Capital investors have been rewarded with a 23% return since Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway announced it took a 10% stake in the commercial real estate company last summer.

Unlike mall operators, STORE Capital’s business focuses on buying free standing commercial buildings (it owns 2,000 properties) that it leases to services-oriented business that are more insulated against the threat of e-commerce, such as restaurants, movie theaters, and gyms.

It has over 400 customers operating across 15 service industries, and since those customers sign long-term leases containing rent escalators and most of the company’s debt is fixed rate, investors benefit from greater visibility and cash flow predictability.

The company’s 4.9% forward dividend yield already trounces the market, but I think yields could climb even higher as new properties are bought and leased and rents rise. Last year, improving cash flow resulted in a 6.9% dividend increase. Since 2014, its dividend payment has increased by 24%.

Overall, this is an intriguing way to pocket income from commercial real estate, and Berkshire Hathaway’s seal of approval makes it one of my favorite dividend stocks to buy.

5 Things You'll Want to Know About CVS Health's Plans for 2018 and Beyond

CVS Health (NYSE:CVS) started off 2018 with solid first-quarter results. The company’s retail business looked especially good, bolstered by a rough flu season and the Easter holiday. But the first quarter is now in CVS Health’s rear-view mirror. What lies ahead for the pharmacy giant?

Larry Merlo, CVS Health’s CEO, along with other executives, spoke at length during the company’s first-quarter conference call about several initiatives that are under way. Here are five things they said about CVS Health’s plans for 2018 and beyond that you’ll want to know about.

1. Acquisition activity

Much of the first-quarter call discussion focused on CVS Health’s pending acquisition of Aetna (NYSE:AET). Merlo provided an update on what he called the “three very important workstreams” related to the deal:shareholder approval, the regulatory pathway, and integration planning.

The first of those workstreams can now be checked off. Both CVS Health and Aetna shareholders voted to approve the deal with over 95% shareholder approval.

Merlo stated that CVS is working to provide information requested by the U.S. Department of Justice in February. He added that the scope of the request wasn’t unexpected. In addition, progress has been made on obtaining state-level approvals. The company continues to expect that the acquisition will close in the second half of 2018.

Regarding integration planning, Merlo said the two organizations are working closely together to ensure a smooth transition, laying the groundwork for achieving projected synergies, and creating a “long-term roadmap for success and growth.” He added that “the really exciting part of this transaction is our opportunity to rethink and reinvent healthcare in our country.”

2. Debt

One negative aspect of the planned Aetna acquisition, though, is the additional debt CVS Health took on to fund the transaction. Because of the added debt load, CVS suspended its share buybacks and is no longer increasing dividends until it can lower its leverage ratio.

CVS Health CFO Dave Denton said the $40 billion in new debt related to the Aetna acquisition will result in a pro forma trailing-12-month adjusted debt-to-EBITDA ratio of around 4.6 after the deal closes. The company wants to reduce that ratio to around 3.5 over the two years after the close, with a longer-term goal of lowering the leverage ratio to below 3. Denton stated that CVS Health’s cash flow and savings from U.S. tax reform should enable the company to achieve these goals.

Investors don’t have to be concerned about the additional debt negatively affecting adjusted earnings per share, though. Denton said CVS Health would exclude net interest expense related to the Aetna deal from its non-GAAP metrics beginning in the second quarter. He thinks this change will provide “a clearer picture of our underlying performance until the deal closes.”

3.Preparing for another big health insurer

Aetna isn’t the only big health insurer that has CVS Health hopping. The company is also getting ready to take on Anthem’s (NYSE:ANTM) pharmacy benefits management (PBM) business beginning in 2020.

CVS Health estimates that the implementation costs associated with the Anthem contract will be in the neighborhood of $150 million. Denton said that expenses to support the Anthem implementation were relatively small in the first quarter but would “ramp up as the year progresses.”

This spending will weigh on profit growth for CVS Health’s PBM business for a while. However, the deal will boost revenue and profits once the contract goes into effect.

4. Home hemodialysis

In April, CVS Health announced plans tointroduce new home hemodialysis technology. Merlo stated that CVS thinks it can “use the wealth of data available to our enterprise to predict and support diagnosis earlier in the patient’s disease course.” This could lead to delaying the need for dialysis. And for patients who do need dialysis, he believes that home hemodialysis “has the potential to provide a better patient experience, better health outcomes, and reduce total medical costs.”

Merlo said CVS Health plans to begin a trial of its technology later this summer. Trials will take around 18 to 24 months. If all goes well, the company will then seek FDA clearance.

CVS Health COO Jon Roberts noted that around 10% of dialysis occurs in the home today, but only 1% is hemodialysis. While that’s a narrow market, Roberts said CVS sees opportunities to expand the market, adding that home dialysis usage in some other countries is 30% to 50%.

5. Virtual care

Another innovative initiative planned by CVS Health is to offer virtual care with its MinuteClinics. Roberts stated that the company plans to launch this service later in 2018.

There will be two approaches used for virtual care. Online visits will be available for limited areas such asbirth control, allergies, hair loss, and acne. Video visits will be offered forminor illnesses or injuries, skin conditions, and wellness services.

CVS Health isn’t starting from scratch in developing its virtual care services, though. Merlo stated that the company is partnering with telehealth leaderTeladoc (NYSE:TDOC). He said CVS will use Teladoc as the engine to provides telehealth services through CVS Health’s app. The services will be provided by the company’s MinuteClinic as well as other providers. Merlo added that Teladoc is basically “private labeling our telehealth program.”

A busy year

As you can tell, CVS Health has a lot on its plate throughout the rest of the year. Some of the company’s efforts will no doubt produce short-term pain, especially the impact of the additional debt associated with the Aetna acquisition and the up-front implementation costs related to the Anthem contract. However, all of these plans also hold the potential to generate long-term gains. The downside for investors is that the pains are being experienced now, while any gains won’t be realized until down the road.

Alibaba, CVS, Tesla and Other Earnings to Watch For This Week

Despite pulling back a bit in the past week, the U.S. broad markets still are up 3% or so in the past month. If we continue to see solid fundamentals from company earnings, markets should continue to rise.

24/7 Wall St. has put together a preview of some of the top companies reporting their latest results in the coming week. We have included the consensus earnings estimates from Thomson Reuters, as well as the stock price and trading history for these companies ahead of the report.
