Hot Medical Stocks To Watch For 2019

Gene-based therapy is one of the waves of medical innovation that is growing stronger by the day. In our Specialty Report, we featured two highly promising approaches to gene editing for the management of various diseases. The most popular way that is featured in the Hollywood film (Jurassic Park) is via CRISPR/Cas9: it is utilized by bacteria for million of years as a defense mechanism against viral invasion, and is the basis of gene-modification for Crispr Therapeutics (NASDAQ:CRSP). The other less-mentioned method that is just as effective is Zinc Finger Nuclease. And, Sangamo Therapeutics (NASDAQ:SGMO) is leveraging on this latter method to innovate its pipeline. That being said, we initiated our coverage of Sangamo through a three parts research (I, II, III). In this report, we’ll present an earnings update on Sangamo and analyze a novel catalyst that has the substantial unlocked value.

Wednesday carried the stock market further into record territory, as investors celebrated favorable readings on U.S. gross domestic product, which rose an estimated 4.2% during the second quarter. The Nasdaq Composite led the way higher with gains of 1%, but a solid advance for the S&P 500 pointed to the broad-based nature of the late summer rally. Adding to the positive sentiment among investors was good news from several prominent companies. Square (NYSE:SQ), Glaukos (NYSE:GKOS), and Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

Hot Medical Stocks To Watch For 2019: Fitbit, Inc.(FIT)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Harsh Chauhan]

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) recently unveiled its latest and greatest smartwatch, the Apple Watch Series 4, and Fitbit (NYSE:FIT) shares dropped in what seemed like a reflex action. At first look, this isn’t surprising, as Cupertino is currently leading the wearables space and its latest offering is a clear indication that it will keep pushing the envelope to retain the crown.

  • [By Douglas A. McIntyre]

Fitbit Inc. (NYSE: FIT) had a bit of good news recently as sales of its Versa product rose. However, the news, which helped the share price, was not enough to counterbalance a horrible financial performance and shares that have plummeted 55% in the past two years. Chief Financial Officer William Zerella has jumped ship for another job. Shareholders would be fortunate if Chief Executive Officer James Park followed him.

  • [By Chris Lange]

Fitbit Inc. (NYSE: FIT) shares made a handy gain to start off the week after the company announced that it shipped more than a million Fitbit Versa devices since general availability began on April 16. Overall, this is a sizable number for the firm, demonstrating strong consumer demand for the product.

  • [By Evan Niu, CFA]

Fitbit (NYSE:FIT) has been on the ropes for several quarters now, as smartwatches broadly cannibalize the basic fitness tracker category that has long been the core of Fitbit’s business. The good news is that Fitbit recognized the market’s pending transition years ago, and started acquiring defunct companies that contained the technological pieces that could underpin its own smartwatch ambitions. While the first product that came from those efforts (the Ionic) flopped, the second (the Versa) is performing significantly better in the marketplace for wearables.

Williams Capital Groups Cynthia Motz was one remaining First Solar bull that put out a note on the quarter today:

While we still believe that, with its balance sheet and technology that FSLR is an industry leader, and are maintaining our Buy and price target of $37, we also point out that is still a great deal of uncertainty for the solar industry in 2017, something which FSLR (and others) stress considerably more in their SEC filings than in their press releases and conference calls.

Excluding the company’s stake in Kraft Heinz Co. (NYSE: KHC), its top five holdings at the end of last year were as follows:

American Express Co. (NYSE: AXP): a 17.6% stake valued at $15 billion with a cost basis of $1.3 billion Phillips 66 Co. The following are a few of Buffett’s comments from the letter.

  • [By Motley Fool Staff]

As far as positive surprises go, Wells Fargo(NYSE:WFC) was probably the biggest positive surprise. I probably don’t have to tell most listeners, Wells Fargo hasn’t had the best couple of years, when it comes to their fake accounts scandal, the fallout from that, the other mini scandals along the way, and just recently, their punishment by the same Federal Reserve that says they’re not allowed to grow until they improve. They actually got the approval to buy back more than twice the amount of stock that they did last year. One, that says a lot about how well-capitalized they are. Two, it also says a lot that their management’s willing to do that, that they think that their stock is at such a compelling bargain right now that they’re willing to spend over $25 billion on buybacks alone.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE: WFC) dropped out of the top 10 to end the year in 11th place, and Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) ranked 13th, as it did in 2016.

  • [By Ethan Ryder]

Shares of Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) have received a consensus rating of “Hold” from the twenty-nine research firms that are currently covering the firm, Marketbeat.com reports. Six investment analysts have rated the stock with a sell recommendation, seven have given a hold recommendation and sixteen have given a buy recommendation to the company. The average 12 month target price among brokers that have issued ratings on the stock in the last year is $61.86.

When long-time, sometimes controversial bank analyst Mike Mayo speaks it’s often wise for investors to listen. Recently plucked up by Wells Fargo (WFC)  to cover the banking space, Mayo is fresh off a meeting with top Goldman Sachs (GS)  management, including CEO Lloyd Blankfein. Mayo’s mention of a possible “revenue breakout” in a new note dropped in our email box Tuesday is attention-grabbing (if not a reason to trade Action Alerts PLUS holding Goldman).

Even though there are hundreds of courses available to teach the technical aspects of trading, today, Yael Warman of Leverate outlines five lessons that have been learned by traders the hard way, with experience with winnings and losses.

Trading forex or any other financial instrument for that matter, requires learning. A lot. You need to acquire new skills, continually research market conditions, learn how to analyze trends, evaluate your trades, etc. There are hundreds of courses available to teach you the technical aspects of trading, but the following five lessons are those learned by traders the hard way, with experience with winnings and losses. These are the things you won’t find in a text book.

Trading forex can be one of the most exhilarating and emotionally consuming things you can do while keeping both feet on the ground. The rush you’ll get every time you open a trade and win or the low you’ll experience when having a loss can be energy draining and trying to control your frustration, fear, and greed can be difficult. Be prepared for the emotional rollercoaster. You cannot control the market. The forex market sees over US$5.3 trillion traded each day and it is impossible for one person to cause an impact. Trading forex, however, is not about changing the current, it’s about riding the wave. Greed can break you. Greed can be a great motivator, but when a trade is going in the right direction and you refuse to cash in thinking the trend will continue to benefit you so greatly that you will be set for life, greed can turn against you.

Retail stocks are in focus after the U.S. Census Bureau released monthly sales figures before the bell Tuesday. The bureau said that retail sales increased by 0.3% in April, a figure that matched trade expectations. Markets had expected consumer spending to increase, however home improvement sales were not the major factor that most expected. This was evident from The Home Depot’s earnings report. Markets are increasingly optimistic over U.S. trade negotiations with China. The tax is half what was originally proposed and remains a contentious issue for Amazon, which is the city’s biggest employer. Goldman Sachs Group (NYSE: GS) is sounding the alarm about the state of the markets. The company warned that the U.S. budget deficit is increasing while America’s unemployment rate is falling. This hasn’t occurred since the World War II. The bank believes that the combination of the two could cause the Fed to spike interest rates in the near future. This comes at a time when the Fed has already lost control of interest rates. Look for additional earnings reports from Eagle Materials Inc. The ongoing trade rift between the United States and China continues to plague international markets. Despite reports that both countries are working behind the scenes to prevent additional detrimental trade policies, both countries recently proposed tens of billions in new tariffs on one another. The United States has accused China of widespread intellectual property theft, while China has accused the United States of unfair trade practices, including price manipulation in the agricultural industry. This morning, it’s worth noting that proposed tariffs on U.S. business jets will likely not provide a competitive advantage to foreign competition. For most of the dividend seekers, retirees, or passive investors, Cincinnati Financial Corp. and Aflac Inc. are the best-in-class listed insurers which increase their dividends gradually, rewarding the long-term investors. I am not a dividend seeker nor a retiree nor a passive investor. In the future, I would be classified at least in one of this category (especially becoming an early retiree if I have the chance to have the capital to live with the received dividends). But for the moment, the Ohio-based P&C insurer or the US’s largest provider of supplemental insurance are not on my wish list.

Protect American jobs by getting tough on China.

That’s the underlying idea behind President-elect Donald Trump’s threat of a 45% tariff against China as a ploy to bring jobs back to America.

Before pursuing that strategy, however, Trump might want to check out what happened when his predecessor tried that.

President Obama slapped a stiff 35% tariff on Chinese tires in 2009 after American companies complained about unfair competition. They said China was flooding America with tires at low prices making it tough for U.S. companies to compete. The tire tariff gradually waned, and finally ended in 2012.

The tariff saved 1,200 U.S. tire jobs, which had been in sharp decline. And U.S. tire production rose after a major decline.

“Over a thousand Americans are working today because we stopped a surge in Chinese tires,” Obama said in his 2012 State of the Union address.

But a study from the Peterson Institute of International Economics found that the tariffs cost Americans in many other ways.

Oil prices are at levels we haven’t seen in years. U.S. crude topped $70 for the first since 2014, as U.S. President Donald Trump appeared increasingly likely to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal and reinforce sanctions on Tehran. In addition, OPEC has announced plans to bolster prices and cap production. For oil investors, Money MorningGlobal Energy Strategist Dr. Kent Moors says it’s time to buckle up. According to Moors, revoking the Iran deal would cause “price chaos” around the globe. And that’s right as driving season starts in the United States. Here’s more on the coming chaos for oil. In deal news, Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX) announced it will purchase Gramercy Property Trust (NYSE: GPT) for $7.6 billion in cash. Grammercy manages commercial real estate. While this may seem like a boring deal, Blackstone is buying a business that churns out cold hard cash for its investors. Top 10 Low Price Stocks To Buy For 2018: Yandex N.V.(YNDX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Monday was a positive day on Wall Street, as major benchmarks jumped following an uneventful weekend, tapering their gains as the session came to a close. Some had feared that China might retaliate once again after the U.S. issued a second round of tariffs against the nation with the world’s second-largest economy, but the expected fireworks didn’t come, putting market participants more at ease. The beginning of earnings season in the next week will also distract investors from geopolitical issues, perhaps allowing indexes to climb further. Yet some individual stocks had difficulties that sent their shares lower. Yandex (NASDAQ:YNDX), Menlo Therapeutics (NASDAQ:MNLO), and MGIC Investment (NYSE:MTG) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

Best Biotech Stocks To Invest In 2018

Michael A. Robinson

To hear Wall Street tell it, AbbVie Inc. (NYSE: ABBV) drove right into a ditch last month.

Here’s the thing. The company announced results of a Phase 2 trial on March 22 that were disappointing but hardly fatal. The results mean AbbVie won’t seek fast-track approval for its promising antibody-drug conjugate, Rova-T, but it still expects to be able to take it to market in the near future.

Wall Street overreacted – no surprise there – and AbbVie shares lost 15% in three sessions.

Here’s the thing. Wall Street’s overreaction to AbbVie’s disappointing U.S. Food and Drug Administration trial results weren’t the only reason for its share-price plummet.

You see, though it shouldn’t be, biotech is in the dog house – and investors are primed to punish stocks in the sector for just about anything.

Reuters reports that Chinese aviation executives do not see the layer of protectionism as a way to bolster the nation’s local market. Check back to Money Morning today for more insight on how the ongoing trade war could affect your investments.
Finally, investors will continue to monitor ongoing developments in Washington around the presidency of Donald Trump. The White House has asked a federal judge to block prosecutors from reviewing any files seized from his lawyer’s office during a raid by the FBI last week. The agency seized a trove of documents from lawyer Michael Cohen’s office as part of an investigation into a payment of hush money. The spat between the White House and the FBI continues a day after former FBI Director James Comey called Trump “morally unfit to be president.”
