Best Blue Chip Stocks To Own Right Now

Stocks couldn’t shake off early losses and all three major indexes ended lower on Thursday.

Bloomberg News

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 210.79 points, or 1.17%, to 17830.76. The S&P 500 Index fell 19.34 points, or 0.92%, to 2075.81. The Nasdaq slid 57.85 points, or 1.19%, to 4805.29.

Blue chips were dragged down by Apple (AAPL): Just days after its disappointing earnings, billionaire Carl Icahn said he no longer has a stake in the stock.

From a data standpoint, First quarter gross domestic product grew 0.5%, below economists’ expectations, overshadowing an upbeat jobs report that saw unemployment fall to a four-decade low.

Stifel’s Lindsey Piegza writes that this could push out any interest rate hikes:

From a policy standpoint, should the U.S. economy post meaningful improvement between now and June, assuming the Fed’s concerns surrounding international “risks” are not reignited, policy makers appear well positioned to announce the second rate hike in less than two months’ time.  Of course, following this morning’s disappointing GDP report, it’s difficult to imagine a marked improvement in the economy over the next two months.  More likely, the combination of stagnant economic conditions, a still-restrained consumer, and ongoing concerns regarding risks of contagion from developments abroad – whether directly identified in the statement or not – will make it increasingly difficult for the Fed to raise rates once in the remaining nine months of 2016, if at all.

Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B) has had a cash problem for some time now. Simply put, its businesses have been generating cash quicker than Warren Buffett and the rest of Berkshire’s team can figure out ways to put it to work. While the first quarter saw the cash stockpile decrease for the first time in a while, there’s still almost $109 billion in cash on Berkshire’s balance sheet.

If you want to clobber the stock market &a;ndash; and double your money every two or three years &a;ndash; then buying companies with &l;i&g;accelerating&l;/i&g; dividends is the easiest and safest way to do it.

And I&a;rsquo;ve got good news for you: there are nine blue chip payers likely to raise their dividends next month. So why not &a;ldquo;front run&a;rdquo; this good news and consider these shares now?

The benefit of dividend hikes? Getting a fatter income stream is an obvious reason, but it&a;rsquo;s just the start. A rising payout acts like a lever on a company&a;rsquo;s share price, prying it higher and higher with every single dividend hike.

The pattern is plain as day in this chart of &l;b&g;NextEra Energy,&l;/b&g; a supposedly &a;ldquo;boring&a;rdquo; utility that&a;rsquo;s been quietly sending its shareholders bigger and bigger dividend checks over the past five years.

Ninety-eight percent or more of people who invest should “extensively diversify and not trade,” Buffett has said. Specifically, these investors should buy a very low-cost index fund, the Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-B) (NYSE:BRK-A) chairman and CEO advises. Examples of index funds that track market indexes include the Vanguard 500 Index Fund Admiral Class (NASDAQMUTFUND: VFIAX) and the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO). Index funds are simply funds invested across large collections of companies in the same manner that popular indexes aggregate performance of a group of companies in order to track the broader market’s performance. Popular indexes include the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and the Nasdaq 100. Investing in an index fund allows investors to buy a single ticker symbol that diversifies investments across all of the companies in a given index.

Wednesday was a mixed day on Wall Street, with most major benchmarks easing lower as market participants continued to seek clarity on the trade front. Until negotiations with key partners like Canada and China come to a conclusion, some investors remain nervous about the possible ramifications of a failure to get deals completed. Yet in the absence of any outright negative news, trade-related or otherwise, the market has resisted substantial declines, rebounding from temporary setbacks. Positive sentiment around some key individual stocks has helped to buoy enthusiasm generally. Cronos Group (NASDAQ:CRON), MannKind (NASDAQ:MNKD), and Vera Bradley (NASDAQ:VRA) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

Best Gold Stocks To Watch For 2018: Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK-B)

Warren Buffett told CNBC that Berkshire Hathaway’s (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B) stake in Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)became even more massive during the first quarter. Specifically, Berkshire added about 75 million shares of the iPhone maker, bringing the company’s total stake to over 240 million shares, worth approximately $43 billion as of this writing. This easily makes Apple the largest position in Berkshire’s stock portfolio, according to the latest available information.

  • [By Evan Niu, CFA]

Famed investor Warren Buffett loves Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) stock. The Oracle of Omaha has been steadily increasingBerkshire Hathaway’s (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B)stake over the past couple of years, and it sounds like Buffett has no intention of putting the brakes on buying Apple shares. Berkshire hosted its annual meeting over the weekend, and as usual Buffett offered up some sage adviceto investors looking to emulate his returns.

  • [By ]

Like most investors, Warren Buffett didn’t have a great first quarter. Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B) gained less than 1% through the end of March. That was enough to beat the S&P 500 index, but I doubt Buffett broke out his ukelele to strum and celebrate.

Other tipsWe found many other ways to save on the wedding bill. Here are a few of them:

Buy in bulk from one of the deep discounters such as Costco (NASDAQ:COST) or Wal-Mart’s (NYSE:WMT) Sam’s Club. These places sell everything a do-it-yourself wedding planner would need: beer, food, soda, decorations, booze, vegetables the size of lawn tools, tents, lighting, liquor, gifts, desserts, hooch, snack trays, bridesmaids, disposable cameras, and much, much more — in large quantities and at low prices. We also had luck at Big Lots (NYSE:BIG), where we bought all our tablecloths (much cheaper than renting, and we’ll have them for years). Rather than pay for a $500 wedding cake, we set up a dessert table, featuring a multi-layer cheesecake (made by my wife’s sister) and a variety of treats from a local bakery. We saved a bunch of money, and received many favorable comments (especially from kids and people who don’t like cake). We hired an amateur photographer, and put friends in charge of the videorecording. Some people will say that this isn’t a place to cut costs since you’ll have these images forever, and to some extent, we agree. But professional services are very expensive. If you go the amateur route, just make sure you get samples and references, and choose friends who really know what they’re doing. With the sophistication and affordability of desktop publishing software — and the ability to have the product emailed and printed by your local FedEx (NYSE:FDX) Kinko’s — it’s easy to produce your own invitations and programs. We held our rehearsal dinner in the cafeteria of the elementary school where my wife and I met (as teachers — we aren’t first-grade sweethearts). A tasteful friend did the decorating, and each table was covered in pictures of everyone at the dinner. The good time everyone had while sharing old photos was only matched by the trans-classroom laser tag that followed.

The “I do” do-se-doPerhaps the best decision we made about our weddi

Top Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now

Jiangnan Group (OTC:OTC:JNGHF) is one of the largest manufacturers in China of electricity wires and cables. At first, this seems like a very boring commodity industry that seems heavily exposed to a potential bubble. But taking a closer look reveals an industry with very attractive economics (if you are a large player) where peers tend to get high earnings multiples. And that tends towards consolidation. It is also an industry with huge tailwinds in the form of an underserved electricity market in China and massive announced grid infrastructure projects by the Chinese government for hundreds of billions of dollars. And on top of that is very exposed to the build out of green energy and electric cars which will require a lot of (specialized) power cables and wires. And you get to buy all of that at 5x forward earnings (if copper prices stay where they are now) with no net debt. Of course, if you think China will crash and burn, you can probably stop reading here. If not, then read on!

Top Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Century Aluminum Company(CENX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Alexander Bird]

Aluminum producer Century Aluminum Co. (Nasdaq: CENX) added 3.3%to its share price, and Alcoa Corp. (NYSE: AA) edged up 0.2%, both closing out the day with gains.

  • [By D.R. Barton, Jr.]

According to industry leaders, including Century Aluminum Co. (Nasdaq: CENX) CEO Michael Bless, many of those jobs will be in jeopardy with the new taxes. And then there’s the reciprocal tariff reactions from other nations that would definitely hit the billions of dollars’ worth of U.S. agricultural exports with further jobs in jeopardy.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Earlier this month, the price of aluminum spiked after the U.S. government slapped sanctions on Rusal, the second-largest supplier of aluminum to the U.S. and Canada. That news sent the stocks of U.S. aluminum producers like Alcoa and Century Aluminum (NASDAQ:CENX) soaring on the belief that they’d profit from the higher prices that would likely result from the sanctions.

  • [By Rich Smith]

Shares of Century Aluminum (NASDAQ:CENX)are off 9.7% as of 11 a.m. EDT despite the company reporting a sizable earnings “beat” this morning. Instead of posting expected pro forma losses of $0.23 per share for its fiscal first-quarter 2018, its loss for the quarter was less than $0.01 per share ($0.04 after adjusting for one-time items).

You can see why Century Aluminum (Nasdaq: CENX) commended the President for “acting swiftly and boldly to save the American aluminum industry.” The company intends to ramp up operations at its smelter in Hawesville, Kentucky, putting 300 people back to work. In Illinois, US Steel (NYSE: X) is restarting a blast furnace that will employ at least 500 new workers.

This past weekend, the most anticipated of all annual stockholder meetings kicked off. Roughly 40,000 shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A)(NYSE:BRK-B) from across the country descended on Omaha, Nebraska, to hear long-term investment icons Warren Buffett and his right-hand man, Charlie Munger, speak for hours about the stock market, money, and the state of the U.S. economy.

  • [By Jordan Wathen]

In the mold of a young Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B), Boston Omaha (NASDAQ:BOMN) is a small conglomerate designed to generate attractive long-term returns through the consistent acquisition of undervalued assets. Its current businesses include insurance, real estate, and advertising, and the company plans to expand within these areas and others via both acquisitions and organic growth.

Top 5 Heal Care Stocks For 2018

Millennials — love them or hate them, they are the crux of the workforce. Since the spring of 2015, those who are aged roughly 20 to 36 years have become the largest working demographic. Millennials are no longer the future of our society. The eldest of the group are the front face of our nation. Yet when it comes to investing, too many are suggesting stock picks that are awful for this generation.

Do an internet search for “stock picks for millennials.” Time and again, you will come across the same old names. A popular suggestion are the so-called “FANGs” — Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB), Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX), and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG, NASDAQ:GOOGL). Wow, how original! Others will suggest stalwarts like Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM).

Buffett’s folksy charm and homespun aphorisms like, “Be greedy when others are fearful, and fearful when others are greedy,” and, “It is much better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price,” made him a favorite among individual investors.

Wall Street started the week on a muted note on Monday, as major benchmarks generally closed slightly down. Much of the attention among investors was on the bond market, where 10-year Treasury yields rose as high as 2.99%, signaling to some the possibility of much higher financing costs that could punish companies that overextended their balance sheets with debt when rates were much lower. Yet some individual companies had good news that sent their shares higher. McDermott International (NYSE:MDR), Box (NYSE:BOX), and Hanesbrands (NYSE:HBI) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

And if that wasn't enough, celebrity investor Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-B) reported that he has bought million shares of the iPhone maker in the first quarter. And the stocks since then has been rallying, registering its highest weekly gain since October 2011.

Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. (NYSE: BRK-A) (NYSE: BRK-B) CEO and legendary investor Warren Buffett once again blasted bitcoin at Berkshire’s annual shareholder meeting. On Monday morning, Buffett told CNBC that investors who are buying “nonproductive assets” like cryptocurrencies are betting that “the next person is going to pay you more because they’re even more excited about another person coming along.” On Saturday, Buffett called bitcoin “rat poison squared.”

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Warren Buffett is one of the most successful investors of all time, and one of the reasons why his high-performing Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B) has done as well as it has is because of Buffett’s mind-set. Berkshire’s CEO seeks out businesses that already embrace the principles that he values, and corporate leaders at many of the companies that he has acquired over the years choose to become part of Berkshire Hathaway because they know that the Oracle of Omaha’s interests will be aligned with their own.

This past weekend, the most anticipated of all annual stockholder meetings kicked off. Roughly 40,000 shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A)(NYSE:BRK-B) from across the country descended on Omaha, Nebraska, to hear long-term investment icons Warren Buffett and his right-hand man, Charlie Munger, speak for hours about the stock market, money, and the state of the U.S. economy.

After years of criticizing airline stocks (he once referred to them as a “death trap for investors”), Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-A) (NYSE: BRK-B) bought the big four airlines –Southwest(NYSE: LUV), Delta(NYSE: DAL), American Airlines(NASDAQ: AAL), and United(NYSE: UAL)–last year. The Buckeye State Or The Japanese US-Based Duck?

For most of the dividend seekers, retirees, or passive investors, Cincinnati Financial Corp. and Aflac Inc. are the best-in-class listed insurers which increase their dividends gradually, rewarding the long-term investors. I am not a dividend seeker nor a retiree nor a passive investor. In the future, I would be classified at least in one of this category (especially becoming an early retiree if I have the chance to have the capital to live with the received dividends). But for the moment, the Ohio-based P&C insurer or the US’s largest provider of supplemental insurance are not on my wish list.

The ongoing trade rift between the United States and China continues to plague international markets. Despite reports that both countries are working behind the scenes to prevent additional detrimental trade policies, both countries recently proposed tens of billions in new tariffs on one another. The United States has accused China of widespread intellectual property theft, while China has accused the United States of unfair trade practices, including price manipulation in the agricultural industry. This morning, it’s worth noting that proposed tariffs on U.S. business jets will likely not provide a competitive advantage to foreign competition. Reuters reports that Chinese aviation executives do not see the layer of protectionism as a way to bolster the nation’s local market. The agency seized a trove of documents from lawyer Michael Cohen’s office as part of an investigation into a payment of hush money. The spat between the White House and the FBI continues a day after former FBI Director James Comey called Trump “morally unfit to be president.”

Top 10 Safest Stocks To Own For 2018

There’s no way around it: the S&P 500 now has a P/E ratio of more than 26 going into the first earnings season of 2017, and even the “safest” bets are starting to look scary.

Unless we see massive profit growth all around, there’s a real risk this bull market is going to stutter—or worse.

So where do you go for value? It’s getting harder than ever, but there is one corner of the market that got way ahead of the S&P 500 and has since taken a step back. I’m talking about real estate investment trusts (REITs).

And now, there are three REITs that combined provide over 9% in income with over 200% average dividend coverage. That means they could double their payouts and still generate enough cash to cover them.

Plus, these stocks are out of favor, making them relatively cheap compared to their peers and the overheated broader market.

    (1) William Blair keeping it real on Under Armour (UAA) ahead of May 1 earnings: “Although we see limited near-term downside to shares given our projection for an okay first quarter relative to expectations combined with a high short interest (13 days to cover), we remain cautious given a premium valuation (118 times for Class A and 102 times for Class C), little evidence of a fundamental catalyst to drive top-line growth, and concerns about brand commoditization stemming from new domestic retail channels and a lack of consumer-relevant innovation.”

Top 10 Safest Stocks To Own For 2018: Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK-B)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew Frankel]

Warren Buffett and the rest of Berkshire Hathaway’s (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B) management have had a lingering problem for some time: Cash continues to build up on the balance sheet and there hasn’t been any attractive way to put it to work. At the end of 2017, Berkshire had more than $116 billion in cash and equivalents — far more than the $20 billion or so Buffett likes to keep on hand.

  • [By Jordan Wathen]

Warren Buffett has often said in interviews and annual letters to shareholders that Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A)(NYSE:BRK-B) won’t be a hostile acquirer. That is, it won’t fight to buy a business its owners or management don’t want to sell. But that policy apparently doesn’t apply when Berkshire is acting as seller rather than a buyer.

Best China Stocks To Watch Right Now

With markets at all-time highs, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find undervalued companies. One has to look around the world to identify great opportunities. I believe that Autohome (NYSE:ATHM) is one of them, as it’s a well managed business, with high returns on invested capital, strong competitive advantages and low valuation compared to potential future cash flows. So let’s examine the business in detail.

Autohome is the leading automotive portal in China. The company operates two websites: Autohome.com.cn (new cars) and Che168.com (used cars). The business model is similar to Autotrader or Cars.com, where dealers pay monthly fees to advertise, get their listings on the site, or to get shown higher in search results. Their websites attract 25 million unique visitors each day (18 million through mobile and apps), with 8 million browsing the forums alone. The company has the largest and most active online community of automobile consumers in China. According to management, they capture 81% of all traffic on Chinese car forums.

In the first quarter of 2018, Berkshire Hathaway(NYSE:BRK-A)(NYSE:BRK-B) was able to put more cash to work than it took in, for the first time in years. Here’s why Berkshire’s cash “problem” has gone on so long and why it could finally be coming to an end.

  • [By Matthew Frankel]

Perhaps no stock portfolio is more closely followed than that of Warren Buffett-led Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B). While I feel like most “Buffett stocks” are great long-term investments to make at any time — after all, that’s why Buffett chose them — there are some that stand out as particularly attractive opportunities.

Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B) recently held its annual meeting, which included hours of shareholder Q&A with CEO Warren Buffett and his right-hand man Charlie Munger. While Buffett is obviously the star of the show, Munger is known for his matter-of-fact quotes on issues that are important to the company’s investors.

Retail stocks are in focus after the U.S. Census Bureau released monthly sales figures before the bell Tuesday. The bureau said that retail sales increased by 0.3% in April, a figure that matched trade expectations. Markets had expected consumer spending to increase, however home improvement sales were not the major factor that most expected. This was evident from The Home Depot’s earnings report. Markets are increasingly optimistic over U.S. trade negotiations with China. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s No. 1 economic advisor will visit the United States this week to continue the nation’s dialogue with America. In addition, roughly 100 companies and trade associations will be sounding off to the Trump administration about the potential impact of tariffs in the Chinese markets.
Stocks to Watch Today: TSLA, AMZN, GS
Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) is in focus thanks to tax policy in Seattle. On Monday, the Seattle’s City Council passed a bill that will tax Amazon and 131 other companies $275 per employee each year in order to create a fund to address homelessness in the Seattle. The tax is half what was originally proposed and remains a contentious issue for Amazon, which is the city’s biggest employer. Goldman Sachs Group (NYSE: GS) is sounding the alarm about the state of the markets. The company warned that the U.S. budget deficit is increasing while America’s unemployment rate is falling. This hasn’t occurred since the World War II. The bank believes that the combination of the two could cause the Fed to spike interest rates in the near future. This comes at a time when the Fed has already lost control of interest rates. Look for additional earnings reports from Eagle Materials Inc. Your 2018 Warren Buffett Book List

If you want to understand Warren Buffett’s approach to investing, here are 10 books that can help you do that.

Warren Buffett is an avid reader. In fact, when asked about his secrets to success, Buffett once pointed at a stack of books and said:

Read 500 pages like this every day. That’s how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest.

While we don’t all have time to read quite as much as Buffett does, a good reading list can be made from various books Warren Buffett has recommended over the years. These recommendations, most of which have come from his famous letters to Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B) shareholders, can help you understand how Buffett’s investing philosophy was shaped and give you valuable tools to apply to your own portfolio.

1. The Intelligent Investor, by Benjamin Graham

I can’t fathom any list of “Buffett Books” that didn’t start with this Wall Street classic. Considered the book for new investors who want to learn value investing, Buffett once said that “picking up that book was one of the luckiest moments in my life” and has called The Intelligent Investor “By far the best book on investing ever written.”

In the book, Graham gives in-depth, yet easy-to-understand explanations of concepts like defensive investing, how to cope with market volatility, and some basic analysis methods to find undervalued stocks.

2. Security Analysis, by Benjamin Graham and David Dodd

If The Intelligent Investor is a foundation of value investing, Security Analysis is graduate school. This book’s methods have been Buffett’s “road map for investing” that he’s followed throughout his career.

To be clear, this is a somewhat more difficult read than Graham’s other book, but if you really want to learn how to be a highly effective value investor, this is the book for you. In Security Analysis, Graham teaches the concept of intrinsic value, as well as thorough valuation methods for both stocks and bonds.

3. Business Adventures: Twelve Classic Tales From the World of Wall Street, by John Brooks

More than a quarter-century ago, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates asked Warren Buffett for a book recommendation, and this was it. Gates loved the book. In the Wall Street Journal, Gates said that “Business Adventures remains the best business book I’ve ever read.” While not as much of an investing book as the first two on the list, it gives great insight into the world of finance that Buffett feels is certainly worth a read.

4. Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits, by Philip Fisher

Aside from Benjamin Graham, Philip Fisher is perhaps Warren Buffett’s most highly regarded financial author. One of the major themes in Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits is that a company’s management can be just as important as evaluating its financial statements — a principle Buffet uses in all of the deals he makes and with every stock he buys.

5. Paths to Wealth Through Common Stocks, by Phillip Fisher

At Berkshire’s 2004 annual meeting, Buffett said that “Those (Fisher’s) two books were terrific books, and as with Ben Graham, you can get it all just by reading the books.” Common Stocks is the more well-known of the two, but Paths to Wealth Through Common Stocks is another that has a firm place on Buffett’s list.

To be sure, a fair amount of information in this book is outdated (it was first published 58 years ago), such as the extensive discussion on the major growth industries of the 1960s. However, it’s still full of useful wisdom. My personal favorite section of this book is where Fisher describes in detail how the best-performing stocks achieve such large increases in value.

6. Jack: Straight From The Gut, by Jack Welch

This recommendation came from Buffett’s 2001 letter to Berkshire’s shareholders, and it is former General Electric leader Jack Welch’s autobiography. This is more of a must-read for managers, more so than it is for investors, but remember that it’s difficult to overstate the value Buffett places on good management, and this book is a great way to get perspective on what Buffett’s idea of good management is.

7. The Essays of Warren Buffett, by Warren Buffett and Larry Cunningham

This book contains a collection of Buffett’s own writings on topics such as stock valuation, M&A strategies, alternative investments, and more. Buffett obviously thinks this information is useful reading (after all, he wrote it), and has endorsed this as “the most representative book on my views…he (Cunningham) essentially has taken my words and rearranged them.”

8. Where Are the Customers’ Yachts?, by Fred Schwed

If you want a good laugh, as well as some practical investment wisdom, Where Are the Customers’ Yachts? is the book for you. Buffett called it “the funniest book ever written about investing” in his 2006 letter to shareholders and said that it teaches some truly important lessons all investors should know.

9. The Outsiders, by William Thorndike Jr.

In his 2012 letter to Berkshire’s shareholders, Buffett called The Outsiders an “outstanding book about CEOs who excelled at capital allocation.” The story of eight business leaders’ recipes for success, the book features a section about Berkshire director Tom Murphy.

10. The Little Book of Common Sense Investing, by Jack Bogle

In his 2016 letter to Berkshire shareholders, Buffett said that “If a statue is ever erected to honor the person who has done the most for American investors, the hands-down choice should be Jack Bogle.”

Bogle, the founder of Vanguard and the pioneer of the concept of low-cost index fund investing, wrote this book in 2007 to encourage investors to use index funds (as opposed to higher-fee investment vehicles) to build wealth. Buffett has often said that low-cost index funds are the best investment most people can make. This book will show you why.

4 Takeaways From Berkshire Hathaway's Annual Meeting

Every year at Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE:BRK.A) (NYSE:BRK.B) annual meeting, CEO and Chairman Warren Buffett and Vice Chairman Charlie Munger spend hours answering questions on investing and life in general.  Even though many of the questions asked are pertinent to Berkshire’s businesses, there are always a few takeaways for investors.

For tens of thousands of shareholders, it’s a can’t-miss event and people travel to Omaha from all over the world to get Buffett and Munger’s perspectives.

Below are four of them that stood out.

1. Are Treasury Bonds are a “Terrible Investment”?

When asked about his outlook for interest rates on U.S. Treasurys, Buffett said nobody knows where they’re headed, himself included. But, he did say U.S. Treasury Bonds are a “terrible investment at current rates or anything close to current rates.”

Buffett’s reasoning against long-term Treasury bonds is that the Federal Reserve has been vocal about targeting 2 percent inflation and U.S. Treasury bonds yield a little over 3 percent, which would drop to somewhere around 2.5 percent after taxes. Therefore, individual investors are getting only about a 0.5 percent return after inflation and taxes.

2. No Worries About a Trade War with China

The prospect of a trade war, as well as political back-and-forth between global leaders, added some volatility to markets over the past few months. Ahead of the shareholders’ meeting, U.S. officials were in China to negotiate trade between the two countries.

When asked about the current situation between the U.S. and China, Buffett said that global trade is a “win-win situation,” but he acknowledged that you do run into some problems when “one side or the other may want to win a little bit too much and then you have a certain amount of tension.”

Later, when asked about the impact of steel tariffs on Berkshire’s businesses, Buffett said: “I don’t think either country will dig themselves into something that precipitates and continues any kind of real trade war.”

3. Buffett and Munger Are No Fans of Cryptocurrencies

“Cryptocurrencies will come to bad endings,” Buffett said. And Vice Chairman Charlie Munger has crudely summed up his negative opinions on several occasions.

Buffett and Munger’s opinions on bitcoin really aren’t much of a surprise. Bitcoin is often referred to as digital gold, and Buffett isn’t a fan of gold either. Over the course of thousands of years, gold’s compound rate has been only a “couple tenths of a percent,” Buffett pointed out.

Throughout his investing career, Buffett has typically shunned unproductive assets. Instead, Buffett prefers productive assets like a bond that generates an acceptable level of income or a stock that represents ownership in a business.

4. Berkshire’s Healthcare Venture Should Have a CEO Soon

Shares of health insurers, pharmacy benefit managers, and some drugmakers took a beating when JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM), Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Berkshire Hathaway announced they would be teaming up to improve healthcare for their employees, specifically with the goal of improving employee satisfaction and lowering costs.

The healthcare partnership came up a few times and Buffett said the three companies are in the process of finding the right CEO for the job, and they should be able to announce who that is “before too long."

3 Dividend Stocks That Should Pay You for the Rest of Your Life

To find the best dividend stocks, investors need to pick companies that offer reliable yields, with regular payout increases, and choose stable companies that they can bet on over the long term.

Unfortunately, not all dividend stocks are created equal. For example, some may offer sky-high yields, but lack the financial stability and endurance to become wealth-generating investments. To help you navigate the world of dividend stock investing, and find a few companies that should pay you dividends for the rest of your life, we asked these Motley Fool investors for some ideas. Here’s why they think Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Visa (NYSE:V), and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) could end up being dividend stocks to pay you for years to come.

A dividend play Buffett’s betting on

Danny Vena (Apple): Until recently, there was a lot of fear and doubt surrounding Apple. Rumors regarding weak results produced by the company’s suppliers, slowing demand last quarter for the latest version of its flagship iPhone, and concerns about the company’s growth prospects all weighed on the stock.

Three things turned the tide on Apple shares. The company announced impressive earnings results, increasing its revenue to $61.1 billion, up 16% year over year, while earnings per share grew 30% to $2.73. That beat analysts’ consensus estimates for revenue of $60.9 billion and earnings of $2.64.

Apple also revealed its annual capital return program, approving an additional $100 billion share buyback, saying its stock was undervalued. The company also raised its dividend for the sixth time in as many years, increasing its quarterly payout by nearly 16%. Even though the company has nearly doubled its dividend since 2012, it still pays less than 25% of its profits to support the payout, so these annual increases will likely continue unabated.

AAPL Dividend Chart

Finally, legendary investor and Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B) CEO Warren Buffett revealed that his company had purchased a massive 75 million Apple shares last quarter, adding to its already impressive haul of 165 million shares — bringing its ownership of Apple to about 5%.

Buffett said that trying to determine how many iPhones Apple will sell in a given quarter “misses the point.” In giving insight into his recent purchases, he reminded investors that they should be thinking longer term. “Nobody buys a farm based on whether they think it’s going to rain next year or not,” Buffett said. “They buy it because they think it’s a good investment over 10 or 20 years.”

Take it from the Oracle of Omaha. Buy Apple — it should be paying you for the rest of your life.

A dividend with double-digit growth potential

Jordan Wathen (Visa): The payments industry strikes me as an excellent place for long-term dividend investors to find dividend-paying stocks that will grow their dividends at an above-average rate for decades. Visa is the best of the payments companies today, offering a current yield that can grow far faster than the stock market average.

Though Visa is a household brand that dates back to the 1950s, it still has ample room to grow, as evidenced by the fast way that net operating revenue jumped 13% in the most-recent quarter, helped by increased debit and credit card spending. As transaction volume shifts from cash to card, Visa is one of the best positioned to benefit from increased electronic payments.

I consider Visa to be a royalty on the global economy, as it collects a small fee for every transaction that moves over its network. In the United States, e-commerce is a tailwind for payments growth, as nearly half of personal consumption payments flow over its network. In emerging markets like India, Visa has a head start, as an executive noted on the company’s conference call that the company had more than a50% share of debit and credit card spending in the world’s second most-populous nation.

Visa is a company that can capably increase its dividend at a double-digit pace for years on end, powered by an increasing dividend payout ratio and high-single-digit increase in earnings for as far as the eye can see.

The Windows makers won’t let you down

Chris Neiger (Microsoft): Microsoft has been reinventing itself for the past few years, and so far the results have been substantial. In the full-year fiscal 2017, Microsoft’s sales were up 5% from the year-ago quarter, net income jumped by 26%, and diluted earnings per share popped 29% year over year.

Microsoft is thriving under the leadership of Satya Nadella, and his vision for the company has led to new growth markets like cloud computing. In the third-quarter fiscal 2018, Microsoft’s Intelligent Cloud segment — which includes sales of its server products and cloud services — increased 17% year over year and contributed 29% of the company’s total revenue in the quarter.

The cloud is essential to Microsoft’s future because the public cloud-computing space will be worth $411 billion by 2020. Microsoft is already a leader in this space, and only Amazon.com’s AWS has a more substantial portion of the cloud computing market right now.

Investors should be pleased to see Microsoft’s current growth in the cloud and know that there’s likely more ahead for the company. But they can also bank on Microsoft’s commitment to its shareholders as well.

In the third quarter, Microsoft returned $6.3 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases, which was a 37% increase from the year-ago quarter. It’s worth pointing out that these moves come on top of 14 consecutive years of Microsoft increasing its dividend.

The tech giant pays a respectable 1.8% yield right now, which isn’t as high as you could get with some other dividend plays, but not all companies offer the same stability and long-term growth potential as Microsoft. The company has shown that it can move into new growth markets like cloud computing while maintaining its core businesses, which is a great combination for investors looking for a dividend stock to pay them for many years to come.

Hot Low Price Stocks To Own Right Now

Protect American jobs by getting tough on China.

That’s the underlying idea behind President-elect Donald Trump’s threat of a 45% tariff against China as a ploy to bring jobs back to America.

Before pursuing that strategy, however, Trump might want to check out what happened when his predecessor tried that.

President Obama slapped a stiff 35% tariff on Chinese tires in 2009 after American companies complained about unfair competition. They said China was flooding America with tires at low prices making it tough for U.S. companies to compete. The tire tariff gradually waned, and finally ended in 2012.

The tariff saved 1,200 U.S. tire jobs, which had been in sharp decline. And U.S. tire production rose after a major decline.

“Over a thousand Americans are working today because we stopped a surge in Chinese tires,” Obama said in his 2012 State of the Union address.

But a study from the Peterson Institute of International Economics found that the tariffs cost Americans in many other ways.

My take: With none other than Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-B) also investing in airlines and singing their praises as of late, Gerstner stuck the landing with his United pitch. There’s a definite case to be made that industry conditions have changed for the better, much like they did for the railroads starting more than a decade ago. United may not be the best of the bunch, but you’d do well to take a very close look at the industry. If Gerstner is right, there are multi-bagger opportunities looking down at you from up above.

Bacon: Is This Warren Buffet’s Cryptocurrency Play?

Mining for cryptocurrency is getting tastier and paying off with a lot less electricity use. Kraft Heinz Co. (NASDAQ: KHC) last week launched a promotion that gives consumers an instant chance to win a “bacoin” currently valued at three slices of the company’s Oscar Mayer bacon.

After all the nasty things that Kraft Heinz’s main shareholder had to say this past weekend about cryptocurrencies, maybe Warren Buffett’s attitude will change if bacoins turn into a productive asset. Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-B) owns a stake of about 27% in Kraft Heinz.

As much as the 87-year old Buffett doesn’t like digital currencies, Berkshire Vice-ChairCharlie Munger, who is 94, likes them even less:

To me, it’s just dementia. It’s like somebody else is trading turds and you decide you can’t be left out.

If you happen to win a bacoin, you get a chance to raise the value of the bacoin either by sharing a pre-set message to your Twitter followers or by providing the email addresses of three friends. There are some limitations, so read the rules for yourself.
