Airbnb and San Francisco have settled their dispute over short-term rental regulations.

Airbnb sued its hometown city after San Francisco set a new rule last summer requiring all hosts to register with the city through an in-person process. The two parties settled on Monday: Airbnb will register its San Francisco hosts, and the city will make it possible to obtain registrations electronically.

“We do believe we need to partner with cities … We, as a platform, do fundamentally believe that platforms need to take responsibility,” Chris Lehane, Airbnb’s head of global policy and communications, said on a call with reporters Monday. Lehane referred to litigation against the city as “only a matter of last resort.”

The legal battle began last year, when San Francisco unveiled the new registration rule. Under that law, Airbnb — and other homesharing companies like HomeAway, which filed suit jointly with Airbnb — would be fined up to $1,000 a day for each listing.

The U.K. reached an accord with international inspectors that will help keep the flow of nuclear materials going after the country leaves the European Union.

The International Atomic Energy Agency’s board of governors could approve the U.K.’s draft safeguards this week in Vienna, according to a statement. The IAEA deal will “replace existing agreements” between the U.K. and European Atomic Energy Community, or Euratom, that are needed for the import and export of fuel used in nuclear power plants.

Euratom’s main function is to safeguard nuclear fuel, making sure it isn’t diverted to make weapons. The U.K. will lose that service from Euratom once it departs the EU. Companies including Urenco Ltd. and Electricite de France SA had warned that leaving Euratom without adequately replacing its monitoring services could endanger Britain’s nuclear industry.

Membership in Euratom has helped Britain become a leading manufacturer of reactor fuel and a key participant in EU-led nuclear research projects. Prime Minister Theresa May’s government has drawn fire for the decision to leave Euratom. The organization governs the transport of radioactive materials, reactor fuel, medical isotopes and commercial atomic technology.

General Electric (NYSE: GE) is on the verge of selling its industrial division to private equity giant Advent Capital for $3 billion. According to reports, Advent beat out Cummins in a bidding war for the lucrative industrial engine group.

When a dividend yield gets over 10%, it’s usually a sign that the market believes a cut is coming down the pipeline. Given that Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE:ETP) and Summit Midstream Partners (NYSE:SMLP) currently yield 11.6% and 14.5%, respectively, the market seems to believe that will be the case for both of those master limited partnerships. That’s why investors should steer clear of those two high-yielding stocks and instead consider Crestwood Equity Partners’ (NYSE:CEQP) much safer 7% payout.

Top 10 Safest Stocks To Invest In 2019

We spend most of our working lives contributing money to retirement accounts but what about taking it out in retirement? If you have pre-tax, Roth, and taxable accounts, how much should you withdraw from each one? Here are some things to consider:

1) How much can you safely withdraw? The safest option is to only withdraw earnings and not touch any of the principal but at current dividend yields and interest rates, don’t expect to get much more than about 2% of your portfolio. That’s probably not enough for most people and that number can fluctuate and may not keep pace with inflation in the long term.

The traditional rule of thumb is that you can safely withdraw about 4% of the initial value of a diversified portfolio and increase that amount with inflation for about 30 years. However, the rule was developed during the 1990s when interest rates were higher and many financial experts (including the financial planner who created it) are concerned that the rule is now obsolete. It also doesn’t take into account that you may have to withdraw larger amounts while you still have a mortgage or before you start collecting pension and Social Security benefits so a steady withdrawal rate may not make sense.

El-Erian: 10 Things to Know About Stock Selloff

Increasing debt is the not only a problem for the federal government; it’s also a growing burden for U.S. consumers.

According to the New York Fed’s latest Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit, household debt rose in 2017 for the fifth consecutive year. In the fourth quarter of 2017, household debt grew 1.5% from the third quarter to $13.15 trillion. That’s equivalent to 68% of U.S. GDP.

Debt increased in all major categories: in mortgages (1.6%), student loans (up 1.5%), auto loans (up 0.7%) and credit cards (up 3.2%), but fell 0.9% for home equity loans.

Although credit card debt led the fourth-quarter debt increase, consumers owe far less in credit card debt than in all other major categories, just $834 billion, compared with $8.88 trillion for mortgages, $1.38 trillion for student loans and $1.22 trillion for auto loans.

The Top Cryptocurrency Stories for May 14, 2018
China will soon release an official report on about 30 decentralized currencies. “This independent analysis of cryptocurrencies and global public blockchain technology demonstrates the confidence of the Chinese government in the technology, and will act as a guide,” regulators said. Markets are also keeping an eye on Facebook Inc. (Nasdaq: FB). Last week, Cheddar reported that the social media giant is considering the creation of its own cryptocurrency. The development is surprising, given that the company had banned advertising related to cryptocurrencies earlier this year. The Facebook cryptocurrency would be used to facilitate payments on its platform. It’s worth noting that the head of the group that is exploring the Facebook coin is a board member of the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase. Will cryptocurrencies be part of a future bailout or economic stimulus effort by the U.S. Federal Reserve? That was suggested in new report by research analysts at Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS). The Wall Street investment bank suggests that state-sponsored cryptocurrencies could allow central banks to press interest rates into negative territory. “Freely circulating paper notes and coins (cash) limits the ability of the central banks to force negative deposit rates,” the report reads. “A digital version of cash could theoretically allow negative deposit rates to be charged on all money in circulation within any economy.” Finally, markets are reacting positively to the announcement that ING Bank and HSBC Holdings Plc. (NYSE: HSBC) engaged in their first trade ever using blockchain technology. The two engaged in a trade on behalf of Cargill to finance a shipment of soybeans from Argentina to Malaysia.

The stock market has been a bit volatile this year, but there are some sectors that are still experiencing significant share price gains. For example, the Nasdaq 100 Technology Sector is up about 22% over the past 12 months. Those gains are pretty impressive, but a handful of tech stocks, including Square (NYSE:SQ) and Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), have seen their share prices jump about five times as much.

With company returns as high as 100% over the past year, it’s worth taking a closer look at what Square and Netflix are doing so well, if they can keep the momentum going, and one hurdle each of them faces that investors should be on the lookout for.

A pile of rusty pipes and materials are all that remain of Lanzhou New Area’s tram project. Only a year ago it was a flagship public-private partnership for the planned city in Central China, before it fell victim to President Xi Jinping’s debt clampdown.

"The project is dead," said a guard at the office, who gave only his surname, Le. Nearby, the tram tracks are paved over, the mismatched lines of asphalt scarring a six-lane road that leads to a dead end on the edge of one of China’s most ambitious urban developments.

The size of New York City, the zone is a satellite of Lanzhou, capital of China’s poorest province, Gansu, and a place where Xi’s efforts to wean the country off debt and onto services and consumer spending can be seen in stark relief. In most of China, the economy is powering through Xi’s borrowing bottleneck, with economists surveyed by Bloomberg projecting the nation’s gross domestic product grew 6.8 percent last year, the first annual acceleration in seven years. But for less-developed areas like Gansu the story is not so simple.

Top 5 China Stocks To Own Right Now: ENERGY TRANSFER PARTNERS(ETP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The market has pummeled master limited partnerships (MLPs) over the past few years due to the impact the oil market downturn had on their operations and business model. Among the hardest-hit have been oil pipeline MLP Plains All American Pipeline (NYSE:PAA) and gas pipeline giant Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE:ETP), both of which have lost more than half their value over the last three years. That persistent slump comes even though their turnaround strategies are beginning to gain steam. While these companies still have some work to do before they’re back on solid ground, both could deliver significant returns as they complete their plans and the oil market continues rebounding over the next few years. That upside potential makes them compelling options for investors with a higher tolerance for risk.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Energy Transfer Equity and its MLP Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE:ETP) have a long history of making acquisitions to expand their energy infrastructure empire. In fact, Energy Transfer Equity already has its sights set on its next target: NuStar GP Holdings (NYSE:NSH), which controls MLPNuStar Energy (NYSE:NS). That interest led an analyst on the call to ask if the company could provide any more details.

That, by itself, doesn’t mean their dividends are on solid ground. However, Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE: ETP) deserves a closer look. Like many master limited partnerships (MLPs), it has pulled back over the past week because of a new ruling from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), which regulates tariffs on interstate pipelines.

Top 5 Undervalued Stocks To Buy For 2019

Singapore’s largest property developer, CapitaLand (OTCPK:CLLDY) (CATL.SI) had a pretty good 2017. Helped by improving conditions in Singapore and China, not to mention significant project openings, CapitaLand’s local shares climbed 20% and the ADRs did even better.

Although these aren’t the easiest shares to own, and it’s not a simple company to model, I continue to believe the story and opportunity are worthwhile. CapitaLand management has shown repeatedly that they can successfully develop and manage properties and recycle capital into new value-creating projects. What’s more, the company is a good play on the rising middle class in China, and to a lesser extent, Vietnam, India, and Indonesia. With the shares still about 10% to 15% undervalued, CapitaLand looks like a reasonable option for investors who want exposure to consumer-centric real estate in China and Southeast Asia.

Bad News First – CapitaLand Is Probably Not Well-Placed In Singapore Right Now

Although CapitaLand’s management has shown above-average aptitude for understanding its markets and timing its acquisitions and divestments accordingly, the company seems to be on the wrong foot in Singapore now. Singapore’s residential market is heating up again, but CapitaLand hasn’t been acquiring land to develop new properties and the cupboard is almost bare. Given the time it takes to develop properties, CapitaLand doesn’t have a lot of good options, and I believe management would rather take its lumps and miss a cycle (particularly with more-than-worthwhile opportunities elsewhere) than buy into projects with expected returns below the company’s hurdle rate. Along similar lines, CapitaLand’s exposure to Singapore’s office market is not great and for largely the same reasons.

The Bank of England will probably keep interest rates unchanged this week after an economic roller coaster that saw market bets on an increase flip from near-guaranteed to almost no chance.

A majority of the nine Monetary Policy Committee members will vote to maintain a 0.5 percent benchmark on Thursday, according to a Bloomberg survey of economists.

Governor Mark Carney will address a press conference, and the central bank will also publish new forecasts, crucial in explaining why policy should stay on hold for now but still be tightened in the next few years. Two officials may vote to hike, keeping alive the prospect of tightening later in 2018.

It also claims a debt-to-equity ratio around 0.6 and a current ratio around 1.0, which are further signs of a solid financial condition.

Freeport-McMoRan, Inc. (NYSE:FCX) has done a great job turning itself around. Hot High Tech Stocks To Invest In 2018

Early investors in bitcoin have made fortunes, and that’s prompted many would-be cryptocurrency investors to take a closer look at the wave of interest surrounding bitcoin and other crypto tokens. Yet many people still aren’t comfortable with the idea of actually purchasing bitcoin, with the need to rely on exchanges that don’t offer the same regulatory protections that exchanges in stocks and other securities get from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

If you believe that the prospects for bitcoin and other crypto assets are good, then you can find ways to invest that don’t require you to take physical possession of cryptocurrencies. In particular, the following three investments might offer attractive alternatives to holding bitcoin directly, and for some, the returns could actually be better going forward than those that bitcoin itself ends up producing.
