Hot Warren Buffett Companies To Buy Right Now

On this day in economic and business history…

On May 15, 1951, young car salesman Brady Denton became the 1 millionth unique shareholder of AT&T (NYSE: T  ) . It was the first time in history that any company had achieved such a broad base of ownership, and at a market cap of $12 billion, it meant that the average shareholder possessed a rather modest holding of $12,000 in the telecom monopoly. To commemorate the occasion, AT&T flew Denton, his wife, and two of his three small children (an infant stayed behind with relatives) to New York City for pomp and circumstance befitting such an event. Calls rang in from around the country congratulating Denton, who said with pride, “I hope I never have to cash this certificate number one million.”

Retired AT&T vice president Arthur Page delivered a strong speech that day, one which all long-term shareholders like Mr. Denton ought to appreciate. Here are some highlights:

It ought to be a normal thing for every family to own a part of the country in which they live. But in the history of mankind it has not been normal. In this country it is. If you add up those who own houses, farms or all or part of a business, you will have the greater part of the population.

    Earnings

  • [By Holly LaFon]

During the quarter, Perrigo (PRGO) announced strong September quarter adjusted earnings growth of 20%.  We say “adjusted” because the Company incurred what we believe are non-recurring charges related to the recent purchase of Elan Corporation, which is a branded-drug company domiciled in Ireland.  Upon the closing of this purchase, Perrigo has “re-domiciled” itself in Ireland, with an effective tax rate meaningfully below what they were subjected to in the U.S.  Given that the Company actively pursues a strategy of inorganic growth as much as it pursues organic growth – having acquired six new businesses over the past 18 months (including Elan) – we expect that this new tax structure should make future acquisitions, particularly those U.S. based businesses, much more attractive.  Further, Perrigo’s core business, which includes private-label over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceuticals and infant formula, drove much of the year-over-year growth.  The Company’s unrivaled scale in manufacturing and marketing of store-branded offerings continues to enable retailers to mimic the value proposition of OTC pharmaceuticals and infant formula.  This “store-brand conversion” is a multi-year trend that we expect will continue for the foreseeable future as consumers continue to become more value-conscious, yet more comfortable with store-brand quality that Perrigo helps engineer.

If we look at those stocks trading with single-digit P/E ratios right now, it becomes a very simple task to separate the wheat from the chaff. There are many well-known stocks trading at low P/E ratios that get horrible grades from our system and should be avoided:

Ryland Homes (RYL) is a name you might hear discussed as a bargain, but the stock to a Sell back in November to a “D” and is best avoided. Standard Pacific (SPF) is another builder you should probably avoid as In spite of the low P/E ratio ,you probably want to avoid discount retailer Big Lots (BIG), as a Strong Sell this week.

But fear not — there are some great companies with solid fundamentals that earn a Buy ranking from Portfolio Grader and are better candidates for a low-P/E portfolio.

You need sand to frack and US Silica Holdings (SLCA) sells sand, within the industry known as commercial silica.

US Silica Holdings sales were up 50% in 2012, they should be up another 20% or so in 2013 when fourth-quarter results are available. And unlike many other super growth companies in the fracking space, SLCA makes money. It earned $79 million in the third quarter on $441 million in sales, terrific margins for what is essentially a commodity mining company.
