Hot Warren Buffett Companies To Buy Right Now

It was inevitable: Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) had no choice but to pursue the small-sized tablet segment if it hopes to be relevant. Consumers are increasingly voting with their wallets that smaller tablet form factors are the way to go. Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) has now jumped into that market segment with the iPad Mini, an implicit concession that Steve Jobs was wrong when he proclaimed that the perfect tablet size was around 10 inches.

Thus far, Microsoft’s forays into the tablet market have been with larger devices, including its own Surface tablet that sports a 10.6-inch display. Most Windows 8 and Windows RT devices made by OEMs have also been in the full-sized segment. That’s all changed with the Acer Iconia W3 that was just unveiled at Computex Taipei.

The Iconia W3 is being billed as the “industry’s first 8-inch Windows 8 tablet,” and its 8.1-inch display will compete directly with the iPad Mini’s 7.9-inch screen. An Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) Atom chip is found inside, which promises all-day battery performance. Intel has been making headway in tablet wins, including scoring a spot in Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 (also with an Atom processor). Intel’s pricier chips also contribute to the higher price of the Iconia W3, which will retail for $379.

For instance, AllianceBernstein Income, ticker (ACG), has about 70% of its holdings rated AAA, which is the highest rating you can get. We have some that invest in global real estate.

We have some invested in utility, preferreds, and common. We have some invested in emerging market debt. We try to cover the whole spectrum of investing. When you’re looking at monthly payers, you’re usually getting bond funds as opposed to stock funds.

Steven Halpern: Now among those closed-end funds is there a name or two that stands out that people should be looking at?

Harry Domash: Well, one that’s really good for us has been Reaves Utility Income. It holds primarily US utility and telecom stocks and it’s been a pretty good dividend raiser. The ticker is (UTG), paying about a 6.1% yield now and it’s a good serial dividend increaser so it’s a very good one.

If you’re worried about rising interest rates then Invesco Dynamic Credit Opportunities, ticker (VTA), invests in below investment-grade floating rate bank loans. In other words, these are called senior loans.

They’re bank loans that adjust their payouts based on prevailing interest rates, so if interest rates go up, these loans will pay higher dividends, so this is a good hedge if you are concerned about rising interest rates.

Another one that’s really performed, and it’s paying a 6.9% yield right now, Guggenheim Strategic Opportunities, ticker (GOF), that’s actually Claymore Guggenheim, holds corporate and government backed, that it’s mostly investment-grade and it’s paying a 10.1% yield right now, which is pretty high. Those are three that I could recommend right now.

Steven Halpern: Well, we really appreciate you joining us today and sharing your expertise. Thank you.

    Harry Domash: You’re welcome.

You know, it’s fun to be right about a particular stock, but at the same time, it’s miserable if you didn’t have the guts to actually act on the idea. That’s my tale of woe with Atossa Genetics Inc. (NASDAQ:ATOS). On Monday of this week I was singing its praises, explaining how the chart suggested ATOS was on the verge of a breakout. But, I also suggested waiting for shares to take that one final confirming step…. a move above the 100-day moving average line. Now I wish I hadn’t been so picky.

Alamy What if there was a way to buy Apple (AAPL) — recently trading near $568 a share — for just $500? It’s not an outlandish scenario. That’s essentially what investors buying into Tri-Continental (TY) are doing. Like many closed-end stock funds, Tri-Continental trades for less than the value of its underlying assets. In Tri-Continental’s case, its close on Dec. 24 of $20.18 is a 12 percent discount to its net asset value of $22.95 a share. Tri-Continental invests in some of the country’s largest companies across various different industries. Apple just happens to be its largest holding at nearly 3 percent of the portfolio, but it’s one of the many stocks in Tri-Continental that investors are buying into for pennies on the dollar. If this sounds too good to be true, you would be right. There’s a catch — and a big catch, at that. But let’s first explore the largely ignored universe of closed-end funds. Fun with Funds When investors think about mutual funds they are probably referring to the wide universe of open-ended funds. Led by iconic fund families including Vanguard, Fidelity and T. Rowe Price (TROW), these conventional funds sell an unlimited number of shares. They typically are priced just once at the end of every trading day. Buyers invest and sellers cash out at that day’s net asset value, or the closing value of all of the stocks and investments in the funds after subtracting any liabilities that is then divided by the number of shares outstanding. Closed-end funds don’t play that way. They trade throughout the day on public exchanges. Tri-Continental, for example, trades on the New York Stock Exchange. A closed-end fund doesn’t create new shares when investors want to buy or subtract them when those shares are redeemed. There’s a set number of shares, and the free markets of supply and demand dictate their price. Tri-Continental isn’t new. The fund has been around since 1929, the same year of a historic market crash. It’s one of the hund

That 40% gain in net income is likely to be among the lower increases reported by China’s insurance companies in the next few weeks. The average growth in net income among insurers expected by analysts is 92%. I think that makes it worthwhile holding the best of these insurers—such as Ping An and China Life (LFC), a member of my Jubak’s Picks portfolio, for these earnings reports, even though the systemic stress—and thus risk—in China’s financial system is rising.

China is set to ease the one child policy, something that could benefit Chinese stocks in general but be especially beneficial to insurance stocks like China Life Insurance Company Ltd (NYSE: LFC) and CNinsure Inc (NASDAQ: CISG) plus health care stocks like Mindray Medical International Ltd (NYSE: MR) and Concord Medical Services Hldg Ltd (NYSE: CCM). First, let’s be clear that China is NOT abolishing the one child policy as the changes will merely allow married couples to have two children if one spouse is an only child plus it will be up to China’s 34 province-level administrations to revise their laws and put the new policy into effect. Moreover, China’s family-planning bureaucracy employs more than 500,000 full-time workers and six million part-time workers all the way down to the village level to collect billions of dollars in fines and these bureaucrats have fought for years against policy changes – meaning they could throw up roadblocks if not placated. With that said, the insurance and health care sectors are two sectors with publicly Chinese stocks that look set to take advantage of the coming changes.
