All this talk from A. Gary Shilling and others about the coming danger of deflation? Bleh.
That’s the message delivered in a recent whitepaper from Seth Masters.
The chief investment officer of Bernstein Global Wealth Management says deflation, that “persistent drop in the value of assets,” is unlikely any time soon.
Even if it does, Masters notes that investors already protect themselves from deflation through their bond purchases.
Rather inflation, although dire warnings of which have yet to materialize, is still the threat, Masters argues, and even modest amounts of inflation can be harmful—in some ways, even more so than deflation.
“Inflation-protected assets will always have a place in investor’s portfolios because of heightened uncertainty, the availability of better inflation hedges and reasonable costs for inflation protection,” he writes. “While rare, inflationary periods are notoriously difficult to predict. History shows that major bouts of inflation often strike suddenly and without warning, which is what makes inflation particularly dangerous.”

Given its 144% gain since the end of last year, with 7% of that move coming today, it wouldn’t be tough to get excited about Fresh Healthy Vending International Inc. (OTCBB:VEND) … excited enough to jump into a VEND position. Unfortunately, there are a bunch of tell-tale signs that today is a major (albeit short-term) top today, and we’re very likely headed for a sizable correction beginning tomorrow.

Another component is ChannelFly, a performance optimization capability that automatically determines, which radio frequencies or channels deliver the network throughput based on actual observed capacity, a key benefit for high-density, noisy Wi-Fi environments.
Smart QoS is a software technology that manages traffic load to enhance the user experience. Smart QoS was developed to handle the increasing volumes of voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) and streaming video traffic. Smart QoS offers automatic prioritization of different traffic types through intelligent analytics that classify, prioritize and schedule traffic for transmissi on. Smart QoS employs advanced queuing techniques and dedicated software queues on a per device basis to ensure fairness and optimize overall system performance. Public companies leveraging their patent portfolios, (aka "patent plays"), are getting the market’s attention. Companies such as Vringo (VRNG), ParkerVision (PRKR), MGT Capital (MGT), Worlds Inc. (WDDD.OB) and others have presented trading opportunities due to their volatility while retaining the chance for a big payoff to those investors who stay the course. Yet there exist viable patent plays that are still undiscovered. Some of these so called "plays," which are not getting enough attention, are actually real companies making and selling real products or services in contrast to pure patent monetization companies. Some known examples are Single Touch Interactive (SITO.OB) and Blue Calypso (BCYP.OB). This article is focused on another one of these patent plays, On Track Innovations Ltd. (OTIV).

Small cap wireless charging stock Energous Corp (NASDAQ: WATT) had a spectacular IPO debut last Friday plus it rose another 39.41% today, meaning its worth taking a closer look at the stock along with the performance of a few other players in the wireless charger or charging niche like Qualcomm, Inc (NASDAQ: QCOM) and Energizer Holdings, Inc (NYSE: ENR). After all, wireless charging would eliminate the clutter of wires and charging devices surrounding everyone’s desk, workspace or home. Moreover, a 2011 article in the Independent.co.uk quoted an analyst at IHS as saying the wireless charging market would rise from $123.9 million in 2010 to reach $885.8 million in 2011 and then grow exponentially in 2012 when revenue was expected to increase by 276%. By 2015, market growth was expected to ease to 48% as revenue from wireless charging devices hits the $23.7 billion level.

Energizer Holdings (ENR) shed 5.9% to $96.15. The company on Wednesday said its fiscal first-quarter profit slumped to $1.71 a share from $129.8 million in the year-earlier period. Excluding charges, earnings fell to $2.10 a share from $2.20 a share. Early on Tuesday morning, Wells Fargo downgraded Energizer Holdings (ENR) to “Market Perform” from “Outperform.” Wells Fargo maintained a range of $109 to $112 for ENR’s valuation.
Energizer’s shares have risen over 19% in the past three months, and Wells analyst Chris Ferrara believes that the stock run up now reflects the company’s upside. Ferrara believes that the biggest downside risk for ENR is at a more base level, as Wells Fargo is seeing more EPS upside to ENR’s latest deal with Johnson and Johnson than ENR is expecting.
Wells Fargo maintains its EPS estimate for 2014 to be $7.41 and its 2015 EPS estimate is $7.97.
Energizer stock was inactive in pre-market trading. It finished yesterday down 24 cents, or 0.23%.

Seacoast Banking Corporation of Florida (NASDAQ:SBCF) is certainly no Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) or Bank of America Corp. The smaller bank is far more nimble, and better still, appears to be on the verge of doling out a huge reward for shareholders.

Advisors’ Opinion:
- [By Jim Jubak]
If you’re a trader, you try to catch these ups and downs. If you’re a longer term trader, you sort of go with Japanese equities. The one that I’ve got in Jubak’s Picks is Toyota Motor, (TM), which trades in New York as an ADR. You can also go with something like Torre Industries (TRYIF), which trades as an ADR in New York as well as on the Tokyo exchange. They’re the world’s largest maker of carbon fiber, good play on exports to the aircraft and car industries. Or you can do something like Seven & I (SVNDY), the Japanese company that owns 7-Elevens around the world. So, those would be my ways to play a weak yen if you want to use Japanese equities for the week and the year ahead.
