And what about those emerging markets? Well, this week they’ve been rising–a lot. The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM) has gained 5% this week as of 1:56 p.m. today, while the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) is down 0.3%. How extreme has the turn in emerging markets been? Consider this chart:

The emerging markets, as represented by the Vanguard Emerging Markets Index (VWO) were unchanged for the year in late January, but by early February, were down 7.6% for the year. VWO has improved from its worst levels as it is currently down just 2% for 2014.

  • [By ]

It has already been a much different stock market in 2014 than it was in 2013. The Spyder Trust (SPY) moved sideways until the latter part of January before dropping almost 6% in just 11 days.
