Hot Stocks To Invest In 2014

Oil is a tricky thing. On the surface, it seems so simple. It’s a single commodity that’s extracted, refined, and sold. Much to the chagrin of Adam Smith, though, the price of oil rarely is based on simple supply and demand. It’s one of the most complex commodities in the world because of the economic and political implications it carries. To quote Daniel Yergin, author of The Prize and one of the foremost authorities on energy security:

“The major obstacle to the development of new supplies is not geology but what happens above ground: international affairs, politics, investment and technology.”

Let’s look at three factors that can have a profound effect on the price of a barrel of oil.

1. Economic growth. You could argue for days on whether oil prices determine economic growth or if economic growth has dictated oil prices. So let’s settle on the fact that they both go hand-in-hand. Since 1975, almost every U.S. recession has been accompanied with a pullback in oil prices. It should come as so surprise, then, that oil and the S&P 500 0000have moved in tandem as well.

Small cap Sodastream International Ltd (NASDAQ: SODA), an Israeli based developer, manufacturer and marketer of home beverage carbonation systems, has attracted its share of hype over both its products and its stock, but could other small cap water stocks like Primo Water Corporation (NASDAQ: PRMW), Puresafe Water Systems Inc (OTCMKTS: PSWS) and Alkaline Water Company Inc (OTCBB: WTER) attract a similar following? After all, Sodastream International has managed to create a significant amount of buzz from consumers, investors and even short sellers because it’s the world’s largest manufacturer, distributor and marketer of home carbonation systems as its brands are sold in over 60,000 retail stores in 45 countries. Sodastream International is also up 45.7% since the start of the year, up 70.2% over the past year and up 99.3% since November 2010, but shares did spike up to the $75 level in the middle of 2011 and now trade at the $63 level.

If you’re like most investors, you’ve probably never heard of Euro Tech Holdings Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ:CLWT). I have a confession to make – until a few days ago, I hadn’t heard of it either. Advisors’ Opinion:

The company’s revenues come from the fees charged for operating different domain names. Most domain names’ fees are charged as per agreement terms with ICANN; however, fees received for operating the .gov registry are based on the terms of agreement with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA). As of September 2013, revenues of $125.9 million came from active domain names ending with .com and .net. Even though the company has presence all over the globe, the U.S. contributes 64.8% of revenues, while Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) contribute 15.5%, Australia, China, India and other Asia Pacific countries (APAC), 15.0%, and other countries such as Canada or Latin American countries, contribute 4.7%. Competition is increasing, especially with Latin script ccTLD registries and IDN ccTLD registries, as well as with other name service providers such as Neustar Inc. (NSR) or ARI Registry Services, and search engine providers such as Google Inc. (GOOG) Micros oft, Corp. (MSFT).

Short sellers have been mouthing off about GameStop since at least 2008, and all the stock did was go up – all the way to a high of over $55 back in October. So forgive me if I’m not sold on digital distribution and smartphone gaming “killing” the company just yet! There were 2 catalysts for the recent drop. One, the stock was probably overvalued in the $50’s, considering its less-than-stellar growth prospects. Two, the firmreported a 22.5% drop in new software sales during the holidays. That’s not great, but console transitions have historically caused disruptions in software sales. In the meantime, GameStop continues to buy back large amounts of shares and the dividend yield is now over 3%. WORTHY OF CONSIDERATION.

    Neustar (NSR) – down 31.3%

We’ve written about Neustar recently, with a positive opinion of the company. However, I also commented that the number portability contract renewal was a key risk. That risk looks even more acute considering the firm’s comments about a second proposal being rejected by NAPM. It is rather mind-boggling that management would goof on such an important piece of business – it is well over half of the company’s revenue. But a Neustar without that contract is an entirely different company altogether, and the risks are too large now. PASS.

Convergys (CVG)  shares surged 20% to $25 on light volume after the customer management firm announced it will acquire Stream Global Services Inc. for a total enterprise value of $820 million in cash. The acquisition should add about 35 cents a share to Convergys earnings excluding one-time costs, the company said.

Hot Stocks To Invest In 2014: SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (SDT)

SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (The Trust) is a statutory trust. The Trust was created to acquire and hold the Royalty Interests for the benefit of Trust unitholders. SandRidge conveyed to the Trust the Royalty Interests in specified oil and natural gas properties in the Mississippian formation in Alfalfa, Garfield, Grant, Major and Woods counties in Oklahoma (the Underlying Properties). These Royalty Interests were derived from SandRidge’s interests in a 36 wells and the equivalent of 123 horizontal development wells to be drilled in the Mississippian formation (Trust Development Wells) within an area of mutual interest (AMI), consisting of approximately 49,600 gross acres (42,000 net acres) in the counties where the Underlying Properties are located.

Effective January 1, 2011, the Royalty Interests entitle the Trust to receive 90% of the proceeds from the sale of oil and natural gas production attributable to its net revenue interest in the Initial Wells and 50% of the proceeds from the sale of oil and natural gas production attributable to SandRidge’s net revenue interest in the Trust Development Wells. As of December 31, 2011, the Trust’s properties consisted of Royalty Interests in the Initial Wells, 48 wells (equivalent to approximately 53 Trust Development Wells under the development agreement) and the equivalent of approximately 70 Trust Development Wells to be drilled in the Mississippian formation.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

The problem here is that SandRidge has been dependent on asset sales and its running out of assets to sell. In addition to the Permian sale, SandRidge has now taken three royalty trusts public. One consisting of Permian Basin assets, SandRidge Permian Trust (NYSE: PER  ) and two consisting of Mississippian assets, SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (NYSE: SDT  ) and SandRidge Mississippian Trust II (NYSE: SDR  ) . While SandRidge still owns a portion of each trust, it likely will continue to sell off its ownership stake in each trust as well as other assets it still owns. At some point SandRidge will need to live within its oil and gas cash flows, otherwise, its not worth owning.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

SandRidge has made a huge bet on the Mississippian Lime shale play, especially after selling off its Permian Basin assets late last year. Unfortunately, that bet hasn’t paid off well for shareholders, as the company saw its spun-off royalty trusts SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (NYSE: SDT  ) and SandRidge Mississippian Trust II (NYSE: SDR  ) fail to meet their projections for distribution amounts during the first quarter. The main problem has been that wells in the Mississippian Lime have produced more natural gas than expected, and even with a slight rebound in gas prices, it still doesn’t produce adequate margins compared to oil and natural-gas liquids.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (NYSE: SDT  ) and Trust II (NYSE: SDR  )
These trusts were created by SandRidge Energy (NYSE: SD  ) , with the first Mississippian Trust formed in 2010 and the second formed one year later. Both trusts own royalty interests in oil and gas properties targeting the Mississippian formation and have future upside as SandRidge drills wells as part of the areas of mutual interest.
