Hot Sliver Stocks For 2015

To say that Oxygen Biotherapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:OXBT) has made its presence known over the past three weeks would be an understatement. It would be more accurate and fairer to say OXBT been an “in your face” kind of name that you couldn’t look past even if you wanted to. Rather than continue to sidestep it, care to stop, invest two minutes of time, and get the Q&D version of what’s really going on here? If so, read on.

First and foremost, yes, Oxygen Biotherapeutics is – as small cap biotech names frequently are – a hyped up stock. What’s interesting about OXBT, however, is that there’s some substance to the company.

Oxygen Biotherapeutics specializes in finding ways to deliver oxygen to patients that may not otherwise be getting as much as they need to sustain good health, or in more extreme cases, sustain life. Its products include Dermacyte and Oxycyte. The latter is a topical oxygenating cream (part of a beauty regimen), while the former is being tested as a treatment for traumatic brain injuries… though Oxycyte may be useful as a treatment for several other conditions. Don’t get too excited about the premise being turned into big revenue anytime soon though. Oxycyte is only in Phase 2 testing, and the already-on-the-market Dermacyte only translated into a few thousand dollars worth of sales for OXBT in any of its last several quarters.

  • [By Mike Deane]

Early on Monday morning, Gannett (GCI) had its price target raised to $35 from $34 at FBR Capital. The ratings company also affirmed that Gannett is a “Top Pick.”

Gannett, a publishing and broadcasting company that operates in the U.S. and the U.K., currently has a price of $29.76, and FBR’s new target suggests an 18% upside.

FBR analyst William Bird had the following comments about GCI’s PT raise: “Based on our analysis, we estimate that Gannett’s spectrum is worth approximately $2.2 billion, or $9 per share, roughly doubling in value from the acquisition of BLC (i.e., pre-deal valuation of ~$1.1 billion). Separately, we are lowering our 2014 EPS estimate by $0.07 to reflect the previously announced sale of three stations to MDP (note: an expected midyear close means that the stations will not be in operating results from January 1, but the proceeds will not be received until midyear). We are increasing our price target to $35 from $34 to reflect shareholder accretion from the sale. We like Gannett’s improving business mix, growth profile, and ability to drive growth with its own propeller through higher retrans, synergies, and potential TV acquisitions.”

Gannett stock was inactive in pre-market trading. So far this year, the company’s stock is up 0.61%.

    Created with YCharts

In addition to beating the market since the beginning of the year, diversified energy utilities, such as MDU Resources Group Inc (NYSE: MDU), Dominion Resources Inc (NYSE: D) and Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE), significantly outperformed pure-play or predominantly all-electric utilities, such as Duke Energy Corp (NYSE: DUK) and Entergy Corp (NYSE: ETR), by as much as several percentage points (See Chart B).

Interestingly, among top performers, there was no dominant strategy for exploiting natural gas demand, as these firms were involved in all aspects of the value chain–from exploration and production to distribution and storage. These companies have not only been benefiting from a natural gas surplus, but also from the pressing need to expand US energy infrastructure to deliver this newfound bounty to businesses and households.

Chart B: Diversified Energy Utilities Outperformed Electric-Only Peers

  • [By David Dittman]

Answer: Exelon and FirstEnergy had a lot of exposure to the wholesale power market as well as other particular circumstances that made their situations acute. I don’t foresee a raft of dividend cuts in the sector.
I like electric utilities with a lot of regulated revenue, or with a lot of exposure to the midstream segment of the energy business, as is the case with Dominion Resources (NYSE: D).

While it’s tragic that it took a string of tragedies to make school safety and security a priority in the United States, it can’t be denied that the topic has been put front and center – school systems everywhere are asking themselves tough questions, mainly focusing on what can be done quickly and cost-effectively to secure school buildings. Part of that discussion has put companies like OSI Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSIS), American Science & Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASEI), and View Systems Inc. (OTCBB:VSYM) in the limelight. The three organizations all make security screening and weapons detection systems. If you’ve flown from anywhere inside the United States anytime since 2003, odds are pretty good you or your luggage passed through equipment made by ASEI or OSIS.

For tech-savvy investors who know which companies make them, when they hear the words “weapons detection” or “body scanners”, they tend to think of companies like American Science & Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASEI) and OSI Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSIS). And well they should. OSIS and ASEI are two of the biggest North American providers of the kind of equipment you might see being used by airport security personnel screening passengers before allowing them to their gate. There’s just one challenge in the average school system tapping OSI Systems or American Science & Engineering to help defend their school grounds…. their hardware starts with a six-figure price tag, and rapidly works its way up to higher-capacity and more powerful versions. For a school with multiple doors, it’s simply not feasible. View Systems Inc. is a viable alternative.

Small cap security and surveillance stocks OSI Systems, Inc (NASDAQ: OSIS), Vimicro International Corporation (NASDAQ: VIMC), Analogic Corporation (NASDAQ: ALOG), Lifelock Inc (NYSE: LOCK) and View Systems Inc (OTCBB: VSYM) have been producing a steady flow of news lately that investors might want to take a closer look at. After all, the whole security and surveillance industry is pretty vast as it would include everything from airport scanners to security cameras to software securing everyone’s personal or online data. With that in mind, here is a look at the latest news from important small cap security and surveillance stocks:

Last Friday’s shooting incident at LAX highlighted the need to keep airports and other public places secure – something that small cap airport security stocks like American Science & Engineering, Inc (NASDAQ: ASEI), Analogic Corporation (NASDAQ: ALOG), OSI Systems, Inc (NASDAQ: OSIS) and View Systems Inc (OTCBB: VSYM) do already. In the LAX shooting incident, its still not clear what the shooter’s motive was beyond signs that he was suffering from some kind of mental illness or breakdown. In other words, preventing such attacks in the future (beyond identifying those with mental illness on the verge of snapping) will continue to be difficult as the incident also happened outside of the airport security zone.

Truth be told, it’s not clear if SK3 Group Inc. (OTCMKTS:SKTO) is best described when compared to a name like Cerner Corporation (NASDAQ:CERN), or to a Gentiva Health Services, Inc. (NASDAQ:GTIV). The company’s got elements of both major industries being represented by CERN and GTIV (home health care, and information technology), with the addition of another budding industry thrown into the mix. One thing IS clear though… SKTO shares have decidedly reversed a nasty downtrend, and may now be one of the market’s best small cap healthcare speculative trades.
