Hot Rising Stocks For 2015

“China and US lift global economy” was the banner headline this weekend for the Financial Times. While obviously bullish for the global economy, it is particularly so for gold and silver stocks such as Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX), Goldcorp (NYSE: GG), and Wishbone Gold PLC (PINK: WISHY). That was shown by the exchange traded fund for gold, SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD), and the exchange traded fund for silver iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: SLV), both rising sharply for the week.

While SPDR gold shares was up more than 3% and iSharies Silver Trust jumped about 2.50% last week, it has not been that way for 2013. For the year, the SLV is off nearly 30%. Over the same period, the GLD is down more than 20%.

That has been registered in the performance of stocks such as Barrick Gold and Goldcorp.

His choice for the 2014 Top Stock Pick to watch out for in the coming year, is the Chemical and Mining Company of Chile (SQM).

This company’s stock plunged 59% in 2013 due to weak fertilizer and phosphate prices. However, both Conrad and Jubak feel it is beginning to bounce back this year, due to a return to normalized pricing and earnings.

    Resilient resources
While weakness in fertilizer markets hurt Sociedad Quimica y Minera (NYSE: SQM  ) this year, higher sales volume and margins in other businesses helped the company grow earnings 19% over 2012. Sociedad has a hand in many industrial resources, from iodine to lithium, and it boasts healthy double-digit profit margins. It is also expanding its production capacity to keep up with a world hungry for more fertilizer-based food and lithium-based batteries. Still, the company failed to meet recent expectations and has missed the market rally this year. If markets get spooked and head downward, investors could find peace of mind in the intrinsic value of Sociedad’s physical resources, as well as its 2.6% dividend yield.

Amid the boom in Latin America lately, Chile has produced substantial amounts of economic success. But the drop in commodities markets around the world has weighed on resource-reliant industries, and Sociedad Quimica y Minera (NYSE: SQM  ) is one of the companies that has suffered from that trend. On Tuesday, the company will release its latest quarterly results, and investors are nervous about whether SQM will be able to meet the growth expectations they have for the chemical company.

In June 2012, Vivendi floated its then $8.1 billion stake in ATVI. However, the offering was not well received as there are very few companies that could afford to take over ATVI given its large market cap. Mentioned in the article, it is very likely that there are only three possible strategic buyers with the potential interest and capability to make such an acquisition: Microsoft, Disney, and Asian internet and gaming company Tencent (TCEHY.PK), which has a ~$60 billion market cap. Shortly after in August, Vivendi gave up on the sale.

    The main on-line competitors are:

Qunar.com, a travel website owned by Baidu (BIDU) and a few venture fundseLong (LONG), backed by Tencent (TCEHY.PK) and Expedia (EXPE). Analyst expect it to generate $163M in revenue next year

That is pretty serious competition, needless to say. Having the backing of Baidu or Expedia offers several advantages, but Ctrip is the biggest and most established company. It’s quite difficult to compare Qunar.com to Ctrip, for the simple sake that Qunar is a private company. However, there can be little doubt that it constitutes serious competition:

Shares in Sohu.com (SOHU) continued their rapid rise, hitting yet another fresh 52-week high during the session, as the company announced the special dividend from Sohou yesterday (press release located here). Sohu.com will receive nearly $161.2 million in the transaction which is part of the overall $400 million deal with Tencent (TCEHY.PK) which was announced not too long ago. These are exciting times in the internet space as we move from computers to mobile devices, but China’s internet landscape looks like the ‘Wild West’ right now and we expect to see further deals as companies jockey for position in their respective niches and consolidation begins as the larger players look to step up growth and gain exposure to new business segments.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Iron Mountain’s (IRM) story is now well known. Beset by a secular decline in its paper storage business, Iron Mountain has bet that a conversion into a real-estate investment trust can cure what ails it, by attracting investors interested in its potential yield. The IRS hasn’t seemed too willing to let Iron Mountain become a REIT, but the fact that it could is most likely all that stands in the way of the stock and a lower share price. And so Iron Mountain remains range bound, as investors wait to see what the IRS will do.

    Getty Images

But maybe even the REIT conversion won’t be the savior Iron Mountain–and its investors–hope it will be. Jefferies’ Dan Dolev and team explain:

The outcome of the IRS’ ruling is difficult to predict, but our analysis shows a potentially more muted upside and a bigger downside than many believe. A favorable ruling could trigger a short squeeze, somewhat offset by Event Driven Hedge Funds liquidating. An influx of REIT investors is possible, but our analysis shows that many already own [Iron Mountain]. Alternatively, an adverse ruling could steer attention back to weakening fundamentals, potentially leading to the P/E’s of IRM (24x) and Recall (13x) converging.

Given an already tentative adverse ruling, the bar is high for [Iron Mountain] to convince the IRS that its racking structures are indeed real estate. The IRS would have to ignore its 1975 revenue ruling that it has relied on heavily for nearly 40 years. Even if [Iron Mountain] became a REIT, there is still no guarantee that REIT dedicated investors would buy the stock, especially given rising secular concerns.

Shares of Iron Mountain have dropped 2.1% to $25.86 at 3:47 p.m.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Iron Mountain (IRM) has bet heavily that it’s conversion to a real-estate investment trust would arrest its declining share price. But Don’t count on a permanent benefit without major changes, according to a Jefferies report released today.

Jefferies’ Dan Dolev and Trevor Young explain:

For many years, the durability of IRM’s paper storage business (74% of GP) has made it synonymous with stability, but our proprietary survey highlighting a dramatic decline in paper storage intentions is concerning. Data centers are a step in the right direction, but to ensure long-term viability, IRM needs a comprehensive plan to diversify away from storing paper…

REIT status does not affect fundamentals, but a 2x dividend could bring short-term respite to the shares. Only the IRS knows if IRM would become a REIT; however, if it does, the stock would surely rise on the prospects of a $2+ dividend (~2x C-corp.).

Dolev and Young started Iron Mountain with a Hold rating and a $27 price target. Shares of Iron Mountain have dropped 1.7% to $29 today at 2:41 p.m.

But it’s events like the Missouri accident that should focus industry and investor attention on Iron Mountain (NYSE: IRM).

Operating in the business software and services sector, along with other firms like Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), CA Inc (NASDAQ: CA) and Citrix Systems (NASDAQ: CTXS), Iron Mountain is the premier company in pipeline record management. Iron Mountain plays a critical role in preventing pipeline disasters, maintaining the infrastructure and in overall risk control. The position that Iron Mountain has in the energy network will increase in scale and importance as the use of natural gas increases.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 health care player that’s starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Symmetry Medical (SMA), which designs, develops and produces medical device solutions and surgical instruments. This stock has been hit by the sellers in 2013, with shares off by 22%.

If you take a look at the chart for Symmetry Medical, you’ll notice that this stock has been finding some buying interest over the last two months, each time it’s pulled back to around $7.75 a share. That action has started to form a bottoming pattern for SMA near that $7.75 level. Shares of SMA are now starting to challenge its 50-day moving average of $8.20 a share. That move is quickly pushing shares of SMA within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SMA if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $8.29 to $8.60 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 129,189 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then SMA will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $9.40 to its 200-day moving average of $9.59 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put $10.50 to $11 into range for shares of SMA.

Traders can look to buy SMA off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support at $7.75 a share, or at $7.44 a share. One can also buy SMA off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

David Tulis/AP It’s beginning to look a lot like … the day after Christmas? On the day before Christmas, retailers turned shoppers’ attention to the day after the holiday. Amazon.com (AMZN) already is offering “after Christmas” deals of up to 70 percent off clothes and 60 percent off some electronics. Old Navy (GPS) is running TV ads that its “after-holiday sale starts early” with discounts of up to 75 percent off. And CVS (CVS) was selling a wine cabinet for $10 off at $39.99 and three fleece throws for $9.99 on Christmas Eve. Heather Nadler, 38, stopped by the CVS in Decatur, Ga., on Tuesday, searching for stuffed animals for her children. But she still plans to hit up sales after Christmas. “I’ll probably start shopping for me at that point,” she said. Stores usually wait until after Christmas to offer discounts of up to 70 percent or more on holiday merchandise that didn’t sell. But Americans who are still worried about the economy have held tightly to their purse strings this year, and store sales have fallen for the past three consecutive weeks. The pre-Christmas deals come as retailers are feeling pressure to attract Americans into stores during the final week of what’s typically the busiest shopping period of the year. The two-month stretch that begins on Nov. 1 is important because retailers can make up to 40 percent of their annual sales during that time. Sales at U.S. stores dropped 3.1 percent to $42.7 billion for the week that ended on Sunday compared with the same week last year, according to ShopperTrak, which tracks data at 40,000 locations. That follows a decline of 2.9 percent and 0.8 percent during the first and second weeks of the month, respectively. Stores had a problem even getting Americans into stores, let alone getting them to spend. The number of shoppers fell 21.2 percent during the week that ended on Sunday, according to ShopperTrak. Buffett’s old adage to “be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful” seems to be that team’s approach. After selling its shale assets to Chevron at the top of the market, the company has been diligently acquiring natural gas assets at the market’s low. That blueprint continues to be followed as evidenced by the recently announced acquisition of substantial natural gas assets via its master limited partnership, Atlas Resource Partners (NYSE: ARP  ) .

When investors think of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma stocks, big names like Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) and Celgene Corporation (NASDAQ:CELG) come to mind. Both GILD and CELG are making prolific progress in the war on NHL, and both are fine, well-positioned companies. It’s little Infinity Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:INFI) that may end up making the proverbial quantum leap in the non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma stocks arena, however, and better still, it’s INFI shares that may well end up doling out a much bigger reward than Gilead or Celgene could to newcomers.

Advisors’ Opinion:

In fact, investment opportunities in this niche could soon be on the rise. Several utilities have been considering creating standalone transmission companies this year, including Xcel Energy Inc (NYSE: XEL). But whether it’s a standalone company or the sale of transmission assets to a transmission company, regulatory approval will still be key. For instance, regulators declined Entergy Corp’s (NYSE: ETR) sale of its transmission assets to transmission company ITC Holdings Corp (NYSE: ITC) in 2013.
