TOKYO (AP) — Japanese manufacturers are increasingly optimistic over the business outlook in months ahead, according to a survey released Tuesday in advance of the expected approval of a sales tax increase.

Results from the Bank of Japan’s “tankan” quarterly survey showed large manufacturers were especially upbeat, with a reading of positive 12, up from 4 in the July survey.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was waiting for the survey’s release to go ahead with a long-anticipated decision on increasing the sales tax next year to 8% from the current 5%.

He was expected later in the day to announce the Cabinet’s approval of that plan, along with tax breaks and other stimulus meant to counter the dampening effect on consumer demand that is expected to follow the tax hike’s implementation next April.

Advisors’ Opinion:

On the other hand, food manufacturer TreeHouse Foods (THS) has witnessed higher demand for its products. Its fourth-quarter revenue surged 11.4% over last year as revenue clocked in at $660.3 million. The acquisitions of Cains Foods and Associated Brands last year and an increase in volumes drove this revenue gain. The company also recently acquired Associated Brands, which added to its private-label food product portfolio. Also, TreeHouse’s launch of specialty teas enabled it to expand its single-serve coffee business. Hence, this company provides tough competition to other food players.

    Tuesday’s Range: $3.85-$4.04

    52-Week Range: $2.67-$4.60

    Tuesday’s Volume: 162,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 47,256

From a technical perspective, LCAV bounced sharply higher here right above some near-term support levels at $3.75 to $372 with above-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of LCAV within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if LCAV manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.04 to $4.26 and then once it takes out its 52-week high at $4.60 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in LCAV as long as it’s trending above some key near-term support levels at $3.75 to $3.72 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 47,256 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then LCAV will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $6.19 to $7.

Getty Images From a door-to-door selling icon stocking up on blush after a disappointing quarter to several hotel chains checking in with strong occupancy trends, here’s a rundown of the week’s smartest moves and biggest blunders in the business world. Hotels — Winners Hoteliers were apparently hopping during the first quarter. Despite the iffy weather and the equally iffy economy, the leading chains reporting this week posted surprisingly robust activity. Revenue per available room is a key metric because it tracks occupancy levels as well as prevailing overnight rates. The industry’s doing well when RevPAR is positive, and that’s just what we saw with this week’s reports. Choice Hotels (CHH), Marriott (MAR), and Hyatt (H) clocked in with RevPAR increases of 5.6 percent, 6.3 percent and 6.5 percent, respectively. Twitter (TWTR) — Loser Shares of Twitter hit an all-time low this week after the company posted disappointing user growth. Sure, the “all-time low” remark needs to be accompanied by the caveat that Twitter has only been trading publicly for less than six months. It’s still a grim milestone for last year’s most anticipated debutante. Twitter’s revenue growth was fine, propelled by the recent success of its monetization initiatives. Its outlook was upbeat. However, the one thing that haunted investors this week was that Twitter had just 14 million more unique monthly visitors than it had a quarter earlier. That kind of sequential uptick would’ve impressed at most companies, but Twitter trades at a juicy premium to the market. #Letdown. J.C. Penney (JCP) — Winner The struggling department store operator isn’t out of the woods just yet, but at least one supplier is offering up encouraging insight. PVH (PVH) was presenting at an investor conference in Miami earlier in the week when its CEO offered up an encouraging perspective. “The Penney’s business is running on or ahead of plan and given what their sales trends are,” said CEO Manny Chirico,

ATLANTA — A credit card data breach has been detected that exposed guests at certain Marriott, Holiday Inn, Sheraton and other hotel properties to theft, hotel management firm White Lodging Services said Monday. The breach occurred at food and beverage outlets at 14 hotels, including some operated under the Westin, Renaissance and Radisson names, between March 20 and Dec. 16 last year, White Lodging said in a statement. The company said information subject to potential theft by cybercriminals included names and numbers on consumers’ debit or credit cards, security codes and card expiration dates. Customers who used their cards at the affected outlets should review all statements from the time in question and consider placing fraud alerts on their credit files, White Lodging said. White Lodging wouldn’t estimate how many card numbers might have been taken. Krebs on Security, the cybersecurity blog that first reported the breach Friday, said thousands of accounts had been compromised. The latest data breach comes after the FBI warned retailers last month to prepare for more cyber attacks after discovering about 20 hacking cases in the past year involving the same kind of malicious software used against Target (TGT) over the holiday shopping season. The incident involving Target, the No. 3 U.S. retailer, was one of the biggest retail cyber attacks in history. In a confidential, three-page report to retail companies the FBI described the risks posed by “memory-parsing” malware that infects point-of-sale systems, which include cash registers and credit-card swiping machines in checkout aisles. Restaurants and lounges affected by the White Lodging breach were at hotels in Chicago; Austin, Texas; Richmond, Va.; Plantation, Fla.; Denver; Boulder and Broomfield, Colo.; Louisville, Ky.; Erie, Pa.; Indianapolis; and Merrillville, Ind., the company said. Most advisers are quick to spell out uncorrelated returns as the primary benefit of alternatives but few understand how to conduct comparative analysis. The tendency is to look at the funds’ return and volatility; which starts one off on the wrong path. With alternatives, it’s a two part process in which the first is simply qualification and then the second is measuring the material benefit for your portfolio. The necessary condition is uncorrelated, or non-systemic, returns. Without this, the investor is better off simply selecting a traditional long-only fund with the highest risk-adjusted prospects. Once you have identified a group of uncorrelated funds, the second step involves the tradeoff between return and correlatio

Bloomberg via Getty Images William ‘Bill’ Ackman founder and CEO of Pershing Square Capital Management (left) Daniel Loeb, founder and CEO of Third Point: Two activist investors taking big positions in large public companies and demand even bigger changes. Is activist investing a force for good when it comes to shareholders? Recent events, namely the Bill Ackman-J.C. Penney (JCP) debacle, have left investors and analysts tired of the outspoken hedge-funders of the world. There are, of course, plenty of activists whose actions have enhanced not just their funds’ portfolios, but those of passive, minority shareholders. They’ve forced companies to make positive changes — to restructure, elect new board members, and get back on track toward healthier operations. Then again, others end up like J.C. Penney — a seemingly lost business, rich with legacy yet left crippled by boardroom drama. That leaves us — the average consumers and investors — with a pressing question: Are these megaphoned power players trying to effect change that will benefit all, the company included? Or are they just after results that will juice their own returns? The Age of Activism While many activist investors consider themselves to be molded in the image of a certain Omaha-based super-investor, many of today’s hedge fund superstars have taken a very different approach to the craft of identifying mispriced securities. Like the old guard — raiders like Carl Icahn and Nelson Peltz — young guns such as Daniel Loeb and Bill Ackman take substantial positions in large public companies and demand change in an approach that is about as far from Warren Buffett’s investor behavior as one can get. Their style can be best described as personality-driven activism. The practice is on the rise, too. According to FactSet, 2012 saw 21 activist campaigns in companies with market caps larger than $1 billion. In 2010, the number was 11. In 2003, there were four. While some passive shareholders may
