Investors from Bank Julius Baer & Co. to Pictet Asset Management predict emerging-market assets will extend gains after Lawrence Summers pulled out of contention to be the next Federal Reserve chairman.

The former Treasury Secretary would have reined in Fed stimulus faster than Janet Yellen, his main rival to replace Ben S. Bernanke, according to a Bloomberg Global Poll last week. The central bank’s monthly bond-buying program, which fueled demand for higher-yielding assets worldwide, will probably be cut to $75 billion from $85 billion at a review this week, according to the median estimate of economists surveyed Sept. 6 by Bloomberg.

“The stage is being set for emerging markets to do better and the Summers thing, in the short term, can provide some boost,” said Stefan Hofer, an economist at Bank Julius Baer & Co., which oversees $406 billion of client assets globally. Asia offers the best prospects as there is the added benefit of an improving Chinese e conomy, he said.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Arjun Sreekumar]

The higher resource estimate is due mainly to a reassessment of the quality of the company’s acreage and improved technical knowledge it has gleaned over years of drilling. Conoco is not the only company to revise its Eagle Ford resource estimate upward. Peer EOG Resources (NYSE: EOG  ) also this year increased its Eagle Ford resource potential to 3.2 billion barrels of oil equivalent, of BBOE, up 45% from a previous estimate of 2.2 BBOE, thanks largely to improvements in completion techniques and tighter spacing between wells.

Analysts at Howard Weil downgraded EOG Resources (NYSE: EOG) to Sector Perform from Sector Outperform with a $105 price target. Shares gained 1.19 percent, closing at $101.15.

It doesn’t get any more straightforward than what’s going on in shares of industrial gas supplier Praxair (PX). Praxair has been bouncing higher in an uptrending price channel since all the way back in April, which is creating a buyable opportunity in shares this week.

The uptrending channel in Praxair has done a good job of defining the high-probability range for shares since that time. Logically, then, it makes sense to become a buyer as close to trendline support as possible; in short, you want to “buy the bounce.” And shares are certainly bouncing now.

Buying off a support bounce makes sense for two big reasons: it’s the spot where shares have the furthest to move up before they hit resistance, and it’s the spot where the risk is the least (because shares have the least room to move lower before you know you’re wrong). Remember, all trend lines do eventually break, but by actually waiting for the bounce to happen first, you’re ensuring PX can actually still catch a bid along that line.

The 50-day moving average has been a good proxy for support lately, so it’s a solid place to put a protective stop if you decide to be a buyer at this point.
