Hot Prefered Stocks To Own Right Now

If trading intraday, daily or on a weekly time frame basis, you want volatility.

At the same time, traders also want to avoid being stopped out in the midst of this volatility. When using the stop loss, you’ll want to maintain a good risk-reward ratio.

There is a solution to give you the best of both worlds: Volatility and no stop loss with good risk/reward ratio.

What if you could buy a stock at 25 and sell it at 50…would you like that stock?

The risk is capped to $25 and this stock is either going to $50 or it’s not. It may even go to $100. But why be greedy when the risk-reward ratio is good and it does not take months/years waiting on a stock to double. This could be done in minutes, hours or at most days. How is this possible to find this kind of capped risk, good risk/reward ratio trade multiple times an hour, day or week?

    Speaking of results …
Right now, quarterly earnings season is well under way, which provides a perfect opportunity for one of those “check in from time to time” moments. While the iPIG portfolio did nothing last week, several of its picks did report, and those quarterly confessionals can help determine whether the companies are still worth owning. To summarize key results:

United Technologies (NYSE: UTX  ) reported decent numbers, with net earnings ahead of expectations but growth driven more by acquisitions than by organic improvements in its existing businesses. Given the company’s conglomerate setup, growth by bolt-on acquisitions isn’t surprising, but over the long haul, it’d be better to see its businesses growing internally as well as through acquisitions. The news at Mine Safety Appliances (NYSE: MSA  ) wasn’t quite as good, with both revenues and net earnings falling from year ago levels on a tough environment for the mining businesses it supports. That’s a risk well known to the company and its shareholders, though, and while the weaker results did knock the company’s stock down, the business has ridden through tough cycles before. It looks capable of riding through this one, too. Hasbro (NASDAQ: HAS  ) , on the other hand, reported earnings that beat expectations on an operating basis, before restructuring charges knocked it down to a net loss. Given that the company is in the very seasonal toy business, that loss in an off-peak quarter is much less of a concern than it would have been in the make-or-break holiday quarter. UPS (NYSE: UPS  ) kept on trucking, with a better-than-expected January and strength from eCommerce helping the company turn in an 8% growth in net reported earnings per share. Overall, UPS is operating efficiently, though its future success is tied to its ability to continue delivering more packages. As long as its e-commerce business continues to grow, though, UPS is wel

Job creation last month was shockingly weak, but analysts couldn’t really explain why –- other than to blame the weather — which left investors unsure how to react Friday. Many analysts say the numbers are likely to be revised higher next month, and in the end, market reaction was muted. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) lost ground for a third straight day, declining nearly 8 points, but the Standard & Poor’s 500 index (^GPSC) added 4, and the Nasdaq composite index (^IXIC) rose 18 points. Target (TGT) lost more than a point after saying the data breach that began on Black Friday was much worse than previously thought. The company now says as many as 70 million customers had personal information stolen. Target also lowered its fourth quarter outlook, partly because sales slumped after the data breach was first revealed. Sears (SHLD) tumbled by around 13.5 percent. It expects a big quarterly loss as sales fell during the holiday shopping season. Several smaller, specialty retailers also fell: Pacific Sunwear (PSUN) slid 16 percent, Five Below (FIVE) fell 7 percent, Shoe Carnival (SCVL) lost 5 percent, and Conn’s (CONN) lost 2 percent. But Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) jumped 12 percent. It raised its earnings forecast as sales were not as bad as expected. Elsewhere, Alcoa (AA) fell about 5.5 percent. It’s not quite the economic bellwether it used to be, but the aluminum giant still matters, and its net came in a bit shy of expectations. YRC Worldwide (YRCW) tumbled 13 percent after workers rejected a contract offer. That has raised fears the trucking company could be forced into bankruptcy. On the upside, the weak jobs report could keep mortgage rates from rising, and that boosted housing stocks. KB Homes (KBH) rose 3 percent, William Lyons up 4 percent, and Lennar (LEN) was up 2 percent. And on Thursday we reported that shares of Intercept Pharmaceuticals nearly quadrupled in price on news of a positive clinical study for its liver dr

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services/AP WASHINGTON — The federal government will end its contract with CGI Federal for the error-plagued website, instead signing a contract with Accenture, The Washington Post reported Friday in its online edition. U.S.-listed shares of CGI Group (GIB), the parent of CGI Federal, were down 3.5 percent at $31.36 in late trading on the New York Stock Exchange.’s technology failures in the weeks after its Oct. 1 launch created a political crisis for President Barack Obama, threatening the rollout of his signature health care law to consumers and emboldening its foes among Republican lawmakers to call for its delay. CGI has been immersed in the effort to repair the site, which began working more smoothly for hundreds of thousands of consumers in December, allowing them to enroll in new health insurance plans offered under Obama’s Affordable Care Act. But the government’s dissatisfaction over the website’s early crash, as well as aspects of the site that still do not work, are behind plans to sign a one-year contract with Accenture (ACN) instead, the Post report said, quoting a person familiar with the matter. CGI’s current contract for the work ends in late February, and the new 12-month agreement with Accenture is valued at about $90 million, the Post said. In an emailed statement, an Accenture spokesman said, “We are in discussions with clients and prospective clients all the time — but it is not appropriate to discuss new business opportunities we may or may not be pursuing.” Officials at CGI weren’t immediately available for comment. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the government agency overseeing the health-reform law’s rollout, wouldn’t confirm or deny that it planned to end its contract with CGI. “We are working with our contract partners to make a mutually agreed upon transition to ensure that continues to operate smoothly for consumers,” a CMS s

Things are a little simpler in shares of CGI Group (GIB), an $11 billion Canadian IT services firm. You don’t have to be an expert technical analyst to figure out what’s going on in this stock. In fact, a quick glance at the chart will do.

That’s because GIB is currently forming an uptrending channel. The pattern is just about as basic as it gets: a pair of parallel trendlines have been reigning in GIB’s price action for all of 2013, bouncing shares higher all the way up. Those two price levels give traders a high-probability price range for shares of GIB, and as you might imagine, it makes sense to jump in close to trendline support.

Since GIB is currently in the middle of the price channel, it’s still got a little downside room to push into before it becomes buyable. But shares are on their way down now, so it makes sense to keep this name on your radar. When the time comes to buy, keep a protective stopjust below the most recent swing low at $33.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Meanwhile, small-cap TV broadcaster Gray Television (GTN) is showing some bullish overtones after tracking sideways for the last month and change. GTN is currently forming a cup-and-handle pattern, a classical bullish setup that triggers on a move through the $9.25 level. Don’t put too much thought into the cup-and-handle setup itself; instead, just focus on that breakout level at $9.25.

Whenever you’re looking at any technical price pattern, it’s critical to think in terms of those buyers and sellers. Triangles, and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what’s going on in a stock, but they’re not the reason it’s tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That $9.25 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it’s a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That’s what makes a breakout above it so significant — the move means that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

My selection of stocks was now almost entirely based upon themes. Instead of seeking out value in out-favor-sectors, I had temporarily diverted to the path of attempting to identify investing themes, although I would only purchase a stock if I deemed it to be a bargain. The major themes I had identified were natural gas related stocks, material stocks such as cement companies, and discounted Chinese growth stocks which made their money by selling their products to Chinese consumers. I also owned significant positions in some other purely American companies which included Casey’s (CASY) and Gray Television (GTN). Ultimately, Gray Television would turn out to be a colossal failure (more on GTN later).
