Hot Mid Cap Companies To Buy Right Now

A week doesn’t go by without hearing about the problems which will be created by the world’s rapidly ageing population. Much of the focus is on how fewer people will mean lower future economic growth. The likes of Harry Dent have popularised the idea but it’s also been given intellectual heft by thousands of demographic consultants.

There’s no doubt that the world is getting older. Many will be surprised to learn that even Asia has serious issues on this front. For instance, fertility rates in South Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore are below those of European countries such as Italy and Germany, which are most commonly associated with demographic problems.

The post today though will look at the silver linings associated with ageing demographics. Older populations don’t necessarily equate to lower economic growth. Boosting productivity is the key to offsetting declining working-age populations. Without it, there will indeed be much lower growth but we’re hopeful that the seriousness of the issue will prompt real solutions to address productivity.

Consolidation has been incremental in the paper and forest products industry. In May 2012, Resolute Forest Products (RFP) (formerly AbitibiBowater) announced that it had acquired 50.1% of Fibrek and acquired the remaining 49.9% in August. 2011 saw International Paper (IP) announce a hostile takeover of Temple-Inland and after offering $32/share in cash as well as the assumption of $600M of TIN’s debt, IP was able to close the deal in February 2012. 2011 also saw Rock-Tenn (RKT) acquire Smurfit-Stone to create the number two player in the linerboard segment with 20% market share, trailing only International Paper’s 40%. We see these moves as a prudent step to consolidation in the industry as certain types of paper such as newsprint and uncoated free sheet (office paper) are seeing falling demand due to increased use of digital resources.

Blackstone (BX) reported a better-than-expected first quarter on Thursday, logging its most profitable quarter ever.

The private equity firm said it earned $814 million, or 70 cents a share, up from 55 cents a share in the year-earlier period and well ahead of the consensus estimate of 57 cents.

Revenue rose 19.9% to $1.51 billion, also above the $1.3 billion analysts were expecting.

Moreover, BX’s strategic positioning continues to strengthen and BCP V is approaching a carry position which should drive a step function in ENI and DE and thus distributions, in our view.”

Sandler O’Neill’s Michael Kim and James Howley reiterated a Buy rating on the stock and $37 price target, writing that realizations remain robust, fund raising has never been stronger, and the firm is increasingly leveraging its global scale: “At a high level, we think today’s news further validate momentum continues to build across the franchise. Put another way, activity levels remain high across fundraising, deal flow, and realizations setting the stage for concurrent growth in AUM (up 25% year-over-year) and distributable earnings. In turn, we look for ongoing realization activity to power a ramp up in distributable earnings (and therefore distribut

All of this points to a rosy picture for premium grocery chains. Yet the stock performancee paint a very different picture. Compare the performance of publicly traded premium grocers — Whole Foods, Sprouts Farmers Market (SFM), The Fresh Market (TFM), and Fairway Group Holdings (FWM) — against that of the ultimate common-man’s grocer, Walmart. Since last October, Walmart is the only grocer stock that hasn’t seen substantial declines. What gives? I have one word for you: valuation.

Large cap natural and organic foods supermarket giant Whole Foods Market, Inc (NASDAQ: WFM), otherwise known as “Whole Wallet”or “Whole Paycheck,” is not the only player in the natural or organics supermarket space for consumers and investors alike as mid cap Sprouts Farmers Market Inc (NASDAQ: SFM) and small caps Fairway Group Holdings Corp (NASDAQ: FWM) and Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage Inc (NYSE: NGVC) are also players in the space. It should be mentioned that Whole Foods Market is down 15.7% since the start of the year and has a downward trending technical chart, but shares are still up 13% over the past year, up 426.3% over the past five years and up 3,108.6% since January 1992.

Just before Thanksgiving, small cap networking stock Infoblox Inc (NYSE: BLOX) sank 28.65% on guidance that was below expectations, but the stock has still outperformed the year-to-date performance of networking ETF like the PowerShares Dynamic Networking ETF (NYSEARCA: PXQ) and iShares S&P North American Networking ETF (NYSEARCA: IGN). So what went wrong and could investors have just overeacted?

Mid cap telco equipment stock Alcatel Lucent SA (NYSE: ALU) is up 205.9% since the start of the year for a much better performance verses peers or benchmarks like Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) or the iShares North American Tech-Multimedia Networking ETF (NYSEARCA: IGN) – meaning its probably worth taking a closer look at the stock as its been producing plenty of good news for a change. I should note that we have recently added Alcatel Lucent SA to our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio as a technical based trade because we think shares will continue higher on speculation about an improved global footprint for this leading mobile data network provider.
