Expect emerging market threats to boost volatility for U.S. stocks.

Here are six things to watch for, and the implication on U.S. equities, writes Michael Purves, chief global strategist and head of equity derivatives research at Weeden:

Emerging market outflows increase across all asset classes. Potential for higher social unrest with a potential echo of an Arab spring dynamic playing out. Watch Argentina, Brazil, South Africa and Turkey. Pan-emerging-market sentiment exposed to downside keeping EM equities in a sustained bear market and overwhelming valuation arguments. Increased correlation across EM equities. Developed-market corporations with EM exposure missing/guiding lower in coming quarter on foreign exchange and business slowdown related weakness. Slower China putting downward pressure on many commodity prices (copper, iron ore, perhaps oil).

Implications for U.S. stocks are not good. But at the same time, Purves points out that as the Asian financial crisis of 1997 unfolded, the Standard & Poor’s 500 index corrected about 8% from overbought conditions and then rallied, made fresh highs and produced a 3.5% gain for year without dividends.     Elise Amendola/AP NEW YORK — Netflix has reached a deal with Comcast to ensure that its TV shows and movies are streamed smoothly to households, the first deal the online video streaming service has reached with an Internet service provider. The two companies said in a joint statement Sunday they’re establishing a more direct connection to provide a better service to customers that will also allow for future growth in Netflix traffic. The companies say the arrangement is already giving customers a better experience. Netflix (NFLX) had 33 million U.S. streaming subscribers at the start of the year and accounts for about one third of all traffic at peak times on the Internet, according to research firm Sandvine. As the video steaming company has grown, Internet service providers like Comcast (CMCSA) (CMCSK) have pushed the company for more structured deals to enable its content to be transmitted smoothly and reduce the strain on their networks. While the companies didn’t disclose the terms of the deal, Netflix investors will want to know how much this deal will affect the company’s bottom line and whether the costs will be passed on customers. Netflix has been resisting paying fees to Internet companies and this deal could open the door to similar agreements with other providers. Netflix is already experimenting with different rate plans that charge slightly more for households that want to stream its shows and movies on four different screens simultaneously. The deal comes after months of collaboration with Comcast though Netflix will receive no preferential network treatment under the multiyear deal, the statement said. Comcast was ranked as the 14th fastest Internet service provider in January, according to a table on Netflix’s website.     CBS shares were mostly flat during pre-market trading Wednesday.

The media company said late Thursday its fiscal second-quarter profit slid to $150 million, or 26 cents a share, from $1.4 billion, or $2.42 a share, a year ago.     Regional cable TV and Internet provider Cablevision Systems Corporation (CVC) on Friday announced better-than-expected third quarter earnings results, reversing a year-ago loss.

    Cablevision’s Q3 Earnings in Brief
    – Net income totaled $294.6 million, or $1.10 per share, reversing last year’s loss of $3.79 million, or -1 penny per share.
    – Revenue rose 1.8% from last year to $1.57 billion.
    – Analysts expected much lower earnings of just 11 cents per share, on matching revenue.

    Latest Dividend Reiterated; Yield Surpasses Peers
    In its earnings release, Cablevision announced it would continue its dividend payout of 15 cents per share. The latest dividend will be paid on Dec. 13 with an ex-dividend date of Nov. 20. The company has not raised its dividend payout since May of 2011.

    Despite the lack of dividend raise, CVC’s dividend yield of 3.84% compares favorably with other stocks in its industry. Time Warner Cable (TWC) offers a yield of 2.2%, while Comcast Corporation (CMCSA) yields just 1.65%. The average dividend yield for S&P 500 companies is around 2.5%, so Cablevision’s yield is well above both its industry average as well as the wider market average. Still, its lofty yield has come more as a result of poor price performance, rather than dividend increases

    Shares Rise, but Still Tail Indexes
    Cablevision shares rose more than 2% in early trading on Friday, but the company’s stock performance has lagged the wider markets for quite some time. Year-to-date, CVC has gained about 6%, compared with a 24% gain in the benchmark S&P 500 index. The stock was trading around the $38 level as recently as early 2011, so its dividend yield has risen significantly as its stock price plunged to around $16.

A lot of bigger companies than DISH have tried to talk major networks and broadcasters into similar arrangements, only to be shot down. DISH agreed that users of the streaming service wouldn’t be able to zap through the commercials for newer Disney shows. Modell’s Sporting Goods — Loser Dick’s Sporting Goods (DKS) is filing a complaint in a New Jersey court after it caught Mitchell Modell — CEO of rival Modell’s — spying on it. The lawsuit claims that Modell posed as a Dick’s executive to gain access to private areas and learn business techniques at Dick’s. If the allegations hold up, Modell’s behavior was at the very least unethical, not to mention ironic — a sporting goods chain’s helmsman resorting to such unsportsmanlike conduct. Wouldn’t it have been easier to just hire a Dick’s executive? Zillow (Z) — Winner Speaking of the right way to pry away information from a competitor, Zillow announced on Wednesday night that it was bringing on a key executive from Realtor.com parent Move (MOVE).     Today’s biggest gainer among the Dow 30 stocks was The Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS). The House of Mouse agreed to a deal with Dish Network Corp. (NASDAQ: DISH) that allows the satellite company to stream content from Disney-owned ABC and ESPN to Internet connected devices. This is a pretty big deal and the first of its kind. Shares traded up 2.91% at $81.77 in a 52-week range of $55.76 to $82.17 (a new 52-week high) just ahead of the closing bell. Disney’s volume is on track to be about 15% below the daily average of around 7.3 million shares traded.
