Hot Managed Healthcare Companies For 2014

Last week, FedEx (FDX) was on the receiving end of positive comments from Citigroup and Raymond James. This week, the love keeps coming, as Deutsche Bank has released its own positive report on the delivery company.

Lehmann Maupin Credit: Lehmann Maupin

Like everyone else, Deutsche Bank’s Justin Yagerman starts with his reservations: FedEx has gained 28% during the past three months, trumping the United Parcel Service’s (UPS) 14% advance, the 1.1%rise in J.B. Hunt Transport Services (JBHT) and the 3.9% loss in Expeditors International of Washington (EXPD).

Still, Yagerman finds plenty to love. He explains his affection for FedEx:

We believe FDX represents a unique investment story (a large cap that can drive above-average earnings growth due to a self-help story) with operating leverage to a potential global economic recovery. We expect that FDX should begin to realize the benefits of its workforce reductions and various profit improvement initiatives at Express during CY2014 as well as potential improvement in both the Chinese and European economies, which appear to be underway.

When it comes to investing in department stores, most people would opt for Macy’s (NYSE: M  ) or Kohl’s (NYSE: KSS  ) over J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP  ) or Sears Holdings (NASDAQ: SHLD  ) .

  • [By Will Ashworth]

InvestorPlace contributor James Brumley believes Eddie Lampert’s move to spin off Lands’ End from its parent – Sears Holdings (SHLD) — is simply a $500 million lifeline. While I agree the dividend is burdensome, it isn’t life-threatening. The interest expense in 2014 on the $515 credit facility used to pay the dividend is estimated to be $25 million. Lands’ End’s operating income in 2012 was $82 million; in the first three quarters of fiscal 2013 it’s 35% higher year-over-year. It will be fine.

Oddly, Amazon may be the beneficiary of a crop of store closings by retailers as diverse as Staples (NASDAQ: SPLS) , Macy’s (NYSE: M) and Sears Holdings (NYSE: SHLD). If the problems this represents are primarily a drop in sales and managements’ forecasts, then it would be hard to argue that any company other than Amazon has taken and will take those sales.
