Hot Low Price Stocks To Invest In Right Now

The technology giant has begun the year with some big news and looks ready to make 2014 a year of exciting changes and developments. Microsoft (MSFT) has announced a new CEO, a new role for its founder, Bill Gates (Trades, Portfolio), and is ready to refocus its business strategy and prepare for expansion into new markets.

The New CEO

The company’s stock was boosted more than 1% immediately following the official announcement of Satya Nadella—former head of Microsoft’s cloud and enterprise business—as the new chief executive officer.

The decision comes after months of anticipation about who would take the place of Steve Ballmer who had announced his retirement back in August of last year. Since the former CEO announced his plans to retire, the stock has risen more than 13% and managed to maintain this increase through the months of uncertainty and speculation about who would become the third head of the 40 year old company.

As former head of the cloud and enterprise business, Nadella’s expertise lies primarily in the areas of research and product development. Because of this, there is some concern about whether or not he will be able to form a business strategy that is driven by sales and marketing.

Yesterday, the Pentagon announced awards of just $347 million in new contracts to contractors. Some were not the kind of companies you’d expect. For example:

Dell (NASDAQ: DELL  ) landed a $9.6 million contract to supply the U.S. Army with desktop computers and tablets. Cardinal Health (NYSE: CAH  ) won $18.6 million as a contract modification exercising an option year on a contract to supply various Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps locations, and federal civilian agencies, with laboratory supplies through April 12, 2014.

On the other hand, traditional defense contractors are still earning money by working for the Pentagon. On Tuesday, Raytheon (NYSE: RTN  ) was awarded a $35.2 million order for AN/ALE-50 towed decoys, which aircraft can deploy to distract incoming missiles. Raytheon is expected to complete deliveries on this contract by March 31, 2015.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

By most accounts, it’s an all-American dream come true. U.S. Geothermal Inc. (NYSEMKT:HTM), working hard – for years – to make something out of nothing can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. HTM has swung to a profit, and is strong enough now that it’s probably going to remain in the black in perpetuity. Shareholders who got into U.S. Geothermal anytime during or after 2012 have finally been handsomely rewarded, with most of that reward materializing in just the past three weeks. Regardless of when an investor got into a position in HTM though, there’s just one thing left to do at this point…. get out. Lock in your gain and walk away, at least for a little while.

  • [By John Udovich]

In addition, there are some other good articles (U.S. Geothermal: When Opportunity Knocks…. (HTM) and U.S. Geothermal is a “Buy”… For the Right Kind of Investor (HTM)) about U.S. Geothermal Inc that were just published on our site. So I won’t recover the same territory and there appears to be no news to explain yesterday’s jump.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Beaten-down companies that you think are likely to recover strongly are also good candidates. Molybdenum miner Thompson Creek Metals (NYSE: TC  ) , for example, sports average annual losses of 35% over the past five years, and carries substantial debt, but molybdenum’s long-term outlook is promising, with price increases likely, and the company has a promising gold and copper mine on track to start producing by the end of the year. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (NYSE: FCX  ) is another major molybdenum player, with considerable operations in other metals, as well — along with new investments in oil and gas production.

The biggest new holdings are Chesapeake Energy puts, and shares of Discovery Communications. Other new holdings of interest include Halcon Resources (NYSE: HK  ) , and Thompson Creek Metals (NYSE: TC  ) . Oil and gas company Halcon, operating in the promising Bakken region, as well as Texas’s productive Eagle Ford shale region, among others, is expected to grow by 30% annually over the coming years. It recently reported 2012 net daily production 128% higher than year-ago levels, and proven reserves up 417%. Halcon was recently one of my colleague Joel South’s top two energy holdings, and analysts at Stifel recently upped its rating from Hold to Buy.

Milligan mine is on schedule with a start-up for the concentrator expected this month, with first ore-feed by mid-August. The company said it expects commercial production to begin in the fourth quarter of 2013, with production ramping to full capacity over the next twelve months.
