But plenty of questions remain that investors should ask before googling how to profit from the findings.

The study
Researchers took 98 common words, including “restaurant,” “stocks,” “religion,” and “happy,” and found a statistically significant relationship between the search popularity of many words and the weekly movement of the Dow Jones Industrial Average  (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) from 2004 to 2011.

The most telling word for future movement was “debt.” The researchers formed a trading strategy based on this word, and while the Dow Jones returned just 16% over the seven-year period, the Google Trend strategy returned 326%.

Does the name Royale Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROYL) ring a bell? If you’re a regular reader of the Small Cap Network site or newsletter, it might. Back on February 3rd, yours truly penned some bullish thoughts on the way ROYL was acting at the time. Given what we had seen up until that time, though Royale Energy had not yet begun to rally, the stock was getting within reach of a monster-sized breakout. Well, that breakout may be underway as of today.

Small cap hydrogen fuel stocks Hydrogenics Corporation (NASDAQ: HYGS), FuelCell Energy Inc (NASDAQ: FCEL), HyperSolar Inc (OTCMKTS: HYSR) and HydroPhi Technologies Group, Inc (OTCMKTS: HPTG) are some of the lesser known small caps that are working with hydrogen fuel or hydrogen fuel cell related technology. I should say that small cap hydrogen stocks are not for risk adverse investors as there are considerable unanswered questions about hydrogen fuel related technology and whether it can be a viable green technology given the fueling infrastructure needed along with the energy and expense involved in creating hydrogen (Note: None of these small cap stocks are profitable at ). But any new technology will pose the same types of risks for early stage investors – especially if its so-called green technology.
