Hot Japanese Companies To Buy Right Now

LOS ANGELES — Honda is the top brand for retaining the most resale value, but Toyota and Audi do well, too, a company that tracks car depreciation says.

But Toyota has the most models overall for cars with best resale in their segments, from the Prius C, a hybrid, for alternative fuel vehicles; to the Land Cruiser for fullsize premium utility vehicles, according ALG, formerly known as Automotive Lease Guide.

Audi did well, too.

“Toyota, Audi and Honda captured the most segment honors due to the consistent high value of all their products,” said Larry Dominique, President of ALG. “Honda was named top Mainstream Brand due to their prudent use of (sales) incentives – $1,000 lower than the mainstream average – and low rental fleet penetration.”

ALG is handing out its top vehicle honors this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Vehicles that were tops in their segment included:

Roadrunner Transportation Systems (NYSE: RRTS  ) reported earnings on May 1. Here are the numbers you need to know.

    The 10-second takeaway
For the quarter ended March 31 (Q1), Roadrunner Transportation Systems beat slightly on revenues and beat expectations on earnings per share.

  • [By Seth Jayson]

Margins matter. The more Roadrunner Transportation Systems (NYSE: RRTS  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That’s why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I’m looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Roadrunner Transportation Systems’s competitive position could be.

  • [By Glenwoods]

Earlier this year the giant food processor, Cargill, partnered with the small Swiss company, Evolva (SIX:EVE), which was developing its own stevia-based fermentation process, also in the pilot stage. As noted earlier in the article, Cargill is in a partnership with Coca-Cola for Truvia, the bestselling stevia product on the market. The success of the Cargill/Evolva partnership could have big implications not just for Cargill and Coca-Cola, but also on the entire stevia and sweetener market. I further believe the success of the partnership could have a major impact on Stevia First. If Cargill’s fermentation method produces a better tasting stevia product at a lower cost it would give Coca-Cola a considerable advantage over the other beverage bottlers, food manufacturers, and stevia producers. Such an outcome would force these companies to scramble to find a similar method in order to compete. There would be a very good chance that rival companies, in order to stay in the game, would have to turn to the other company developing a fermentation-based stevia product– Stevia First. If that happens Stevia First’s value would rise considerably.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By David Dittman]

Early solar movers have subtracted rate-payers, which eats at revenue. Utilities must continue to invest in infrastructure, and that requires rate increases. But higher electricity rates make solar installation seem less expensive, raising incentives to go solar and further eroding the rate-payer base. It’s a potentially vicious cycle for utilities.
Arizona regulators recently ruled that Pinnacle West Capital Corp (NYSE: PNW) can charge customers who install solar panels a fee based on their continued reliance on the grid, a trend that could have legs around the US.
