The Congressional vote to avoid a debt default did not win positive reviews from China.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) America’s largest overseas creditor wasn’t exactly blown away by the deal Congress struck to avoid a potential default.
“[P]oliticians in Washington have done nothing substantial but postponing once again the final bankruptcy of global confidence in the U.S. financial system,” government-run Chinese news agency Xinhau Thursday.
Wednesday’s vote, the commentary said, “was no more than prolonging the fuse of the U.S. debt bomb one inch longer.”
And a Chinese credit rating agency Dagong downgraded the United States, saying the deal did little to change the outlook for the country’s financial condition.
It lowered its view of the U.S. debt rating from A to A- and kept it on negative credit outlook, which means further downgrades are possible.

To quantify the relationship between real gold prices and real yields, we can regress the price of gold from 2006 to 2013 (we used the logarithm of the real price of gold in our model) against the 10-year real yield from the Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) market. (In our view, this regression is appropriate since gold and real yields are co-integrated and there is an economic rationale for believing they should be.) Based on our study, the regression shows that, all else equal, a 100-basis-point (bp) increase in 10-year real yields has historically led to a decline of 26.8% in the inflation-adjusted price of gold. In other words, over the past seven years gold has had a real duration of 26.8 years. (Note that this is solely an empirical duration that describes the way that gold has traded. Since gold has no cash flows, its duration does not need to be constant, and there is nothing magic about the 26.8 number. Just as the correlation between stocks and bond s varies over time depending on changes in macroeconomic variables and investor risk appetite, the real duration of gold may also change in the future.)

Julio Cortez/AP NEW YORK — Many U.S. retailers had to ramp up promotions last month as shoppers continued to watch their spending during the holiday season, hitting profits at several chains. L Brands (LB) cut its earnings forecast for the holiday quarter Thursday after reporting disappointing December sales at its Victoria Secret and La Senza chains. The company said it had to offer more deals than expected, the second month in a row it has had to do so. Family Dollar Stores (FDO) and teen retailer Zumiez (ZUMZ), which both reported sales declines for December, also slashed their profit forecasts. Even retailers that saw big sales gains, such as Kay Jewelers parent Signet Jewelers (SIG), weren’t spared. “Additional discounting was necessary in a highly promotional retail environment,” Signet Chief Executive Officer Mike Barnes said in a statement. A group of nine U.S. retailers in the Thomson Reuters same-store sales index are expected Thursday to report a sales rise of 1.9 percent in December at stores open at least a year, well below the 7.2 percent increase of a year earlier. Including drugstore chains Walgreen (WAG) and Rite Aid (RAD), analysts estimate the rise at 2.7 percent. Gap (GPS) will report after the markets close Thursday. Faced with reticent shoppers worried about their job prospects and modest economic growth, retailers offered more discounts during the holiday season than a year earlier. Between Nov. 3 and Jan. 4, eight retailers, including Walmart Stores (WMT), Target (T) and Macy’s (M) , increased the number of circulars published by 6 percent and sent 57 percent more promotional emails, according to data prepared for Reuters by MarketTrack. Retailers also had to deal with shoppers who were less willing to go into stores: Data firm ShopperTrak this week said foot traffic had dropped 14.6 percent this holiday season. Walgreen, whose comparable sales of general merchandise rose 2.5 percent in December, said fewer shoppers had com
